Item Correlation of intraoperative cytological and final histological diagnoses(Wiley, 2014) Salami, A.; Adeleye, A.; Ogun, G.; Adeoye, A.; Adeolu, A.; Okolo, C.; Eze, U.; Abdullahi, Y.; Lawan, A.; Ogunbiyi, J.; Akang, E.; Shokunbi, M.; Azeez, A.; Malomo, A.Objective: Intraoperative cytology is a cost-effective, rapid, and easy technique, and studies have shown good correlation between intraoperative cytology and histology. We undertook this study to compare the intraoperative cytology diagnoses of brain lesions made in our unit over a 10-year period with the definitive histological diagnoses. The aim was to determine the degree of accuracy of this procedure. Study design: This is a retrospective study of intraoperative neuropathology consultation cytology smears or imprints and histology of 69 cases obtained over a 10-year period. Cytology smears were stained using both Papanicolaou and Giemsa. Histology sections were prepared from routine formalin-fixed paraffin- embedded tissue and stained using H and E method. Each of the smears and histology samples were assessed by at least two pathologists. Cytological diagnosis was correlated with final histological diagnosis. The sensitivity and specificity of cytological diagnosis was evaluated using final histological diagnosis as gold standard. Results: Correlation was strongest with inflammatory lesions followed by low-grade neoplasms. High-grade neoplasms also showed good concordance, but the degree of correlation was lower than in the other categories. Misdiagnosis was commonest with benign tumors. Conclusion: Intraoperative cytology is a relatively simple, reliable, and accurate diagnostic technique and should be more commonly used, particularly in low-resource settings. Diagn. Resident doctors at University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria, made a series of complaints about inadequate consultant supervision, lack of structure in the training programme and excessive workload. These complaints led to an evaluation of residency training. Objective. To investigate perceptions of the residency training programme and levels of psychological distress among residents. Methods. All 250 resident doctors at UCH were invited to complete questionnaires about their residency training and general health as part of a cross-sectional study. Data were analysed using SPSS 16. Results. A total of 128 residents (51.2%) responded to the questionnaire. Of the respondents, 72% rated their consultant supervision as good and 82.6% rated support from nurses as good; 61.8% had <5 hours of research or private study per week. There was evidence of psychological distress in 48.4% of the respondents, and there was a significant association between psychological distress and the intensity of work (p<0.01) Conclusion. The residency training programme at UCH appears to prioritise service provision over research and education activities. Residents who report high workloads also have high levels of psychological distress. Tackling these issues could improve overall satisfaction with residency training and reduce complaints.Item Impact of community driven development project: a case of fadama ii project in oyo state, nigeria(2013) Adeoye, A.; Balogun, O.L; Yusuf, S.A.; Ayantoye, KThis paper evaluates impact of Community Driven Development programme on infrastructure under National Fadama II Project in Oyo State Nigeria. Data were collected from two hundred and sixty-four farmers using multistage sampling procedures. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and infrastructure index. The result shows that average infrastructural index in the area was 0.42. Forty-four villages were classified as infrastructural developed villages (IDV) while the remaining were infrastructural under-developed villages (IUV). This study investigated the possible sperm protective potential of leaf extract of Cassia fistula Linn (Fabaceae) against sodium arsenite induced reproductive damage reflected as reduced sperm motility, livability and concentration. Sixty-four adult male wistar rats (180 to 220g) were used. The rats were separated into 8 groups (A-H) of eight rats each treated for 60days with 0.2ml corn oil (A), 2.5 mg/kg 1 body weight sodium arsenite (SA) (B), pre-administered 100mg/kg-1 Cassia fistula and 2.5mg/kg-1 SA (C), 100mg/kg-1 Cassia fistula (D). pre-administered 200mg/kg-1 Cassia fistula and 2.5mg/kg-1 SA (E). 200mg/kg-l Cassia fistula (F). pre- administered 300mg/kg-1 Cassiafistula and 2.5mg/kg 1 SA (G), 300mg/kg-1 Cassia fistula (H). Phvtochemical screening of Cassia fistula extract revealed the presence of carbohydrates, alkaloids, anthraquinones, cardenolides, tannins, saponins, phenols and steroids. Group G rats had a significant (P<0.05) decrease mean right testicular weight compared to the rest of the groups. There was a significant (P<0.05) decrease in sperm motility of groups B, C, E, G and H compared to groups A, D and F rats. The mean sperm count obtained across the groups also followed similar trend. Arsenic exposure led to a significant increase in sperm abnormalities and testicular damage evidenced by vacuolation of secondary spermatocytes, loss of spermiogenic epithelium. In conclusion. Cassiafistula at a dose of 100mg.kg-1 was found to attenuate Arsenic-induced testicular damage and sperm abnormalities. Cassia, fistula may therefore represent a potential therapeutic option to protect testicular tissues against arsenic intoxication.
