Item Antimicrobial and pharmaceutical properties of the seed oil of leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de wit (Leguminosae)(2011-01) Aderibigbe, S. A.; Adetunji, O. A.; Odeniyi, M. A.The seed oil of Leuconia leucocephala was investigated for its antimicrobial activity and the pharmaceutical properties of its lotion formulation determined. The oil was extracted from the pulverised dried seeds of the Leuconia leucocephala plant by cold maceration in n-hexane. The oil was tested against four bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Esherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and four fungi (Aspergilus niger, Rhizopus stolon, Penicillum notatum and Candida albicans) isolates. Gentamycin and tioconazole were the reference drugs respectively. The oil was later formulated as a lotion and the pharmaceutical properties of the formulation determined. The oil was found to have a concentration-dependent activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, while showing no activity against the fungi tested. The lotion formulation of the oil containing oleic acid had good pharmaceutical properties and was stable over the test period. Leucaena leucocephala seed oil extract had a concentration-dependent activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and the lotion formulation had good pharmaceutical properties.Item The challenge of implementing inclusive education for children with hearing impairment in Nigeria(2012-07) Isaiah, O. O.; Aderibigbe, S. A.This paper examined the concept of inclusive education, the characteristics of children with hearing impairment, benefits and the challenges of inclusive education. The authors identified some findings that highlighted the problems facing inclusive education in developing countries The paper finally focused on factors that could enhance the successful implementation of inclusive education especially in developing countries like Nigeria.Item Evaluation of nauclea diderrichii (De Wild.) merrill leaf extracts and fractions against some clinical bacterial isolates from urinary tract infections(Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin, Nigeria, 2019) Aderibigbe, S. A.; Alabi, O. S.; Yekini, Q. A.Urinary tract infections (UTIs) constitute considerable health and economic burdens globally. The advent of resistant strains of uropathogens coupled with high rate of recurrent UTIs has heightened the precarious situation. Consequently, research efforts are being directed towards alternative treatment solutions. This study investigated the potential of Nauclea diderrichii leaf extracts and fractions as antibacterial agents against some clinical uropathogen isolates. Chloroform, acetone and methanol extracts of dried leaf of N. diderrichii, obtained by cold maceration, were evaluated for antibacterial activity against five different species (2 strains each) of clinical uropathogenic bacterial isolates from UTI; namely: Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter feacalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The secondary metabolites present in these extracts were investigated by qualitative phytochemical screening. The most active extract was subjected to chromatographic fractionation, while the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the fractions were determined. Chloroform extract exhibited activity against all the strains with inhibition zone diameters of 10 mm - 19 mm, while methanol and acetone extracts showed some activity against some of the organisms with inhibition zone diameters of 10 mm - 18 mm and 12 mm - 16 mm, respectively. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of saponins, alkaloids, anthraquinones, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, phenolics and flavonoids. Fractionation of the chloroform extract yielded three fractions, with MICs: 0.78125 - 25 mg/mL, fraction C; 1.5625 - 12.5 mg/mL, fraction B; and 1.5625 - 25 mg/mL, fraction A. This study confirmed that N. diderrichii leaf contains bioactive compounds against UTI-causing uropathogens.Item Meeting the psychosocial needs of students with hearing impairment through counselling services(2013) Isaiah, O. O.; Aderibigbe, S. A.Adolescents with hearing impairment are often viewed as psychologically and socially maladjustment by all and sundry. This could be as a result of the inability of the environment to meet their psychological and social needs. Consequently, they have low sense of belonging in the society. Although, various scholars have attempted to address the psychosocial needs of students with hearing impairment through various strategies. This paper addressed the meeting of the psychosocial needs of students with hearing impairment though counselling services. It is strongly believed that counselling services in our schools will help students with hearing impairment to be aware of the various opportunities that will help them to adjust to their environment maximally.
