Item Interpersonal factors as correlates of cigarette smoking behaviour among undergraduates in a Nigerian university(Department of Guidance and Counselling, University of Ibadan, 2012-11) Asuzu, C. C.; Agokei, R. O.This investigation arose out of the concern that despite recognition given to cigarette smoking as a major global contributor to hazardous deaths, more young persons including undergraduate students are becoming involved with this practice that is detrimental to health. Without an extensive understanding of factors that causes and mediates the preponderance of smoking behavior, developing appropriate and effective interventions to prevent and manage its occurrences would be futile. Hence, this study employed the descriptive survey design to investigate the influence of some interpersonal factors (gender, peer influence, neighborhood influence and media) on the cigarette smoking behaviour of undergraduates in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Using stratified random sampling, four hundred currently registered undergraduates were selected from five faculties. Four valid and standardized instruments were used to collect data in this study. Multiple regression analysis is the major statistical tool in this study. Peer influence, mass media, gender and neighbourhood influence reported collective and relative contributions to the prediction of smoking behaviour of the participants. The four variables accounted for 42% of the total variance of smoking behaviour of the participants with peer influence being the most potent. It is recommended that school- based programmes such as orientation and seminars should emphasize anti-smoking information behaviour. Method of receiving anti-smoking information such as the television, radio, magazines and school-based learning should be enhanced.Item Sexual practice and belief system among menopausal women in Ibadan: implication for sexual health(Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, University of Ibadan, 2009-07) Asuzu, C. C.; Babalola, E.; Agokei, R. O.This is a correlation cross-sectional study aimed at investigating the sexual beliefs and practices of menopausal women in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. A systematic random sampling of women within the menopausal age was used to select the respondents; 101 women were selected from schools, churches, civil service and markets. A self-constructed questionnaire was used to collect data. Focussed group discussion was also used. The ages of the women ranged between 41 and 65, with the mean age of 47. The results indicated that the three independent variables were potent predictors and accounted for 26.1% variance of sexual practices o f menopausal women. However, only sexual beliefs had significant contribution to the criterion measure. Some women claimed that they had never enjoyed sex and they do not want to continue in the act; some were afraid, believing that sexual intercourse during this period could result in ill health. It was recommended that sexuality health education should be used to tackle the problem of ignorance in this respect, as it could lead to conflict in the family.
