Item Analysis of social support network among civil servants in Oyo State, secretariat Ibadan.(African Journal for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, 2000) Asagba, R.B.; Okechukwu, O.Analysis of social support networks of young adults was conducted on the basis of two scales. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Whom Do You Turn To Scale (WDYTT) among 150 Junior and Senior Civil Servants of the Oyo State secretariat Ibadan. Their mean (X) age was 37.5 while the Standard Deviation (SD) was 15.1. The VAS and WDYTT scale were used to assess the extend of variation in the social network in the adult period of the life cycle. That is, a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) assesses the extent of closeness for seven interpersonal relationships and a second scale determining to whom the respondents would turn to in 14 situations (WDYTT). Chi-Square-test and t-test analyses were employed. The result showed significant differences, between the best female friend mother etc. Family of orientation vs friends as well as intergenerational vs intra generational were also compared on WDYTT scale. Result also showed significant difference on the friends (interpersonal as first and second choice. The implication and recommendation of the study were made on the need for further researches on social network and relationship across the life-span in Nigeria.Item Call for logotherapy as a unifying agent in a diverse world(International forum for logotherapy, 2013) Asagba, R.B.Item Correlates and trends of 'ogogoro' alcohol herbs use among traders of Lagos mile two(Nigeria journal of clinical and counselling psychology, 2007) Asagba, R.B.; Ifeaka, C. D."The study examined some correlates and trends of 'Ogogoro herbs' use among 376 traders in the mile two market Lagos' and environs who responded to the study's questionnaires. Their mean (x) age was 29.25 years and standard deviation (SD) of 2.06 with age range of 20 - 41 years. Three research problems were resolved with the Pearson product moment correlation (r) and T test for the data analysis. The results revealed that there was significant correlation between the knowledge and belief about Ogogoro local herbs use (r = 57, P < .05) and knowledge and use of Ogogoro local herbs (r = 23, P. <. 05) and between belief and the Ogogoro local herbs use (r = 55, P. < .05). Also, the result revealed that drivers and riders were heavily use of Ogogoro local herbs than sellers and buyers (t = 2, 367 = 4,533; P < .05). While male traders used Ogogoro herbs than female counter parts (Male, x = 5.83 and Female, Mean x = 3.99 with t = 2.367 = 9, 82 P. < .05). It was concluded that majority of the marketers engaged in heavy Ogogoro local herb consumption. Major consequences were highlighted with some suggestions and recommendations for the relevant stakeholders in formulating appropriate policy on the preventive programmes in Nigeria."Item Correlates of bio-psychosocial factors on perceived body image amongst adolescents: implications for preventive health education(African research review, 2016) Asagba, R.B.; Agberotimi, S. F."The study examined the interrelationships between a variety of measures designed to index the associations among adolescents' bio-psychosocial factors and body image. Participants were 300 students whose age range between 11 and 26 years (mean = 16.80, SD= 4.17) who completed questionnaires. The questionnaire contained measures of demographics, self-esteem, self-efficacy, food habit index, exercise, weight Data was analyzed using correlation analysis. The results indicated that there was a positive relationship between self-esteem and perceived body image (r = .45, P < .01) and between self-efficacy and body image (r = .22, P < .01. While a negative relationship was found between food habit index and perceived body image (r = -.22, P <.01), food habit and perceived body image (r = -.24, P <.01) and body weight and perceived body image (r = -.17, P < .0 I). There was no relationship between exercise and perceived body image (r = .07, P > .05). The implication of these findings for preventive health education were discussed and stakeholders were advised to inculcate the essence of physical activities and balance food eating habit in their programme in order to improve the level of body image satisfaction among adolescents."Item Cross-cultural validation of selected logotherapy tests among undergraduate students of University of Ibadan(Journal of search for meaning, 2009) Asagba, R.B.The present study examined the psychometric properties and the relationships that exist among selected logo therapy tests: Logotest, Purpose in Life (PIL) test, Seeking of Noetic Goals (SONG) test, Life Purpose 'Questionnaire (LPQ), and Belfast Tests. The battery of tests was administered to 240 undergraduate students of University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. Their ages ranged from 17 to 35 years with a mean age of 23.8 (SD = 3.1). The Cronbach Coefficient Alpha analysis showed moderate to high reliabilities. There was a positive relationship between the PIL and LPQ. Implications of the results were highlighted and recommendations for use of the tests were made.Item Developing a logotherapeutic model for understanding victims of sexual assault(Gender and behaviour, 2015) Asagba, R.B.; Winberly, C.Presently, there is no available logotherapeutic model for understanding the experiences of persons in crises, specifically the victims of sexual assault in Nigeria. The paper first reviewed the literature on some of the available models: equilibrium, cognitive and psychosocial transition. The author has added the existential/logotherapeutic model to literature and based on this model subsequently developed a technique in order to better identify the condition of victims of sexual assault to quickly pave the way for suitable therapy. The paper concluded that when compared with other models, the logotherapeutic model is effective for better understanding and as an intervention strategy in practice for logotherapists and non-logotherapists.Item Effect of alcohol on health and academic performance of a selected secondary students in Ibadan(African Journal of Education, 2001) Asagba, R.B.; Talabi, S.A."This paper examined the effect of alcohol use on general health and academic performance of secondary school students in Ibadan. Data were collected through questionnaire from 300 senior secondary school students made up of, 160 males and 140 females. The mean (X) age is 15.9 with age range of 13 to 21 years old and standard deviation (SD) of 2.20. Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance with the following test analysis: descriptive statistics, chi-square, ANOV A and t-test. The results showed firstly that, students who abstained from alcohol have a better academic performance, Abstainers X = 202.79; monthly drinking X = 187.93, weekly drinkers (X) = 181.33. Secondly, there was significant different in emotional distress between students who abstained from alcohol and students who used alcohol daily, weekly and monthly drinkers {X2 = 12.96, df = 3, P<0.05), and thirdly male students were found to be more involved in alcohol use that female students (males X = 1.17, females X = 0.86) t = 22.64 df = 298 P<0.05).• Finally, it was concluded that alcohol is a problem among Nigerian youths, which required attention from the government and relevant authorities. Recommendation and implication of the study were highlighted for prevention and control of alcohol use/abuse. "Item Gender based violence: a Nigeria experience(Ife centre for psychological studies, 2014) Asagba, R.B.The paper has examined the prevalence of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Nigeria. It was discovered that violence against women is a common phenomenon in society and that the majority of the Nigerian people do not consider it a problem or crime. The paper recommended aggressive education and training that cuts across every strata of the society. Furthermore, it insisted that a collective measure that comprises all stakeholders such as the local, state and federal government as well as all the international agencies are required for the effective eradication of Gender based Violence in Nigeria.Item IFE PsychologIA(Ife centre for psychological studies, 2005) Asagba, R.B.The importance of logotherapy has been neglected in the clinical practice in Nigeria. Despite of the brevity of the therapy, many Nigerian psychotherapists are yet to imbibe it in their practice. In demonstrating the effectiveness of Logotherapy in African culture, specifically Nigerian culture, the paper briefly examines the history of psychotherapy and highlights what logotherapy is about along with illustrations on how its holistic form of therapy is very useful in Nigerian culture. In conclusion, some justifications for using logotherapy are provided in order to guide African psychotherapists in their decision making."Item In Nigeria: call for logotherapy relevant courses on death issues(International forum for logotherapy, 2013) Asagba, R.B.Item Inner meaning fulfilment along differences in age, ethnicity, and educational background of the University Of Ibadan students(Ife centre for psychological studies, 2005) Asagba, R.B.The increasing reports of maladaptive behaviour patterns exhibited by our various territary institutions in Nigeria had led to various responses from different relevant authorities. In the process of finding solution to these social menace, the study sought to find out inner meaning fulfillment (IMF)demographic variables such as age, ethnicity and educational background. There were eight hundred and eighty-five (885) participants with mean age of26.2 years and a standard deviation of 6.0 and age range from 15 - 60 years. The IMF scale (Logotest), which is a questionnaire format was used for the data collection in a survey/ ex-post facto design with randomly selected students within the university community. The findings were discussed in terms of the above three demographic variables differences in students' IMF. Implications of the findings were highlighted, discussed and suggestions made for the relevant authority in all the territory institutions in this country.Item Logotherapeutic management of persons with substance abuse/dependence(Ife centre for psychological studies, 2009) Asagba, R.B.The paper examines the logotherapeutic management of persons with substance abuse/dependence which involves the utilization of a multi-disciplinary approach. Therefore, the paper highlights how this view is in relationship with the concept of logotherapy about man that comprises biological, psychological and spiritual dimensions which the management of substance abuse has to be based upon. Thus, efforts are made to describe logotherapy and logotherapeutic view of substance abuse/dependence. It is concluded with arguments on the need to include logotherapeutic approach to the management of persons with substance abuse / dependence.Item The logotherapist view of xenophobia and violence in south africa(Centre for psychological studies, 2008) Asagba, R.B.This paper looks at the logotherapeutic view of xenophobia in South Africa. The author would like to express displeasure at how many Nigerians had quickly reacted by condemning the action and narrated how many countries, especially Nigeria, had given South Africa assistance to gain freedom from the apartheid regime. This was in virtually all dailies in Nigeria. We have not shown maturity in this regard. We need to show maturity like the way the President; Umaru Yar'Adua handled the case by visiting South Africa to discuss with President Thabo Mbeki of Souh Africa. F.; Wimberly, C.The purpose of this study was to examine meaning in life and life orientation as predictors of self-esteem among first-year undergraduate students ofthe University of Ibadan in Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was used in conducting the study. 192 students comprising 104 males and 88 females whose ages ranged between 63 and 27 years (M = 17.75, SD = 3.01) participated. Participants responded to items of a structured questionnaire containing the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, the Life Orientation Test-Revised, and demographic information. The results showed significant correlations between self-esteem, presence of meaning, optimism, and pessimism. Presence of meaning, search for meaning, optimism, and pessimism significantly predicted self-esteem (R2 = .24; F(4, 185) = 13.10;p < .01). The results also revealed that female students reported higher self-esteem than male students (t(184) = -3.03, p < .01). The mental well-being of students can be enhanced if procedures like counselling and orientation programs address issues on life meaning and if general future outcome expectations are incorporated into the standard procedure for students in their freshman year.Item The prevalence of sexual assault and the need for preventive measure in Nigeria(Ife centre for psychological studies, 2014) Asagba, R.B.The paper examined the prevalence of sexual assault and the need for preventive measures in Nigeria. As currently being reported in most national daily newspapers, the incidence of sexual is daily in the increase and many cases are still not reported. As part of the objectives, the study involved the review of literature, highlighting case studies and the role of culture in promoting and contributing to sexual violence.Item Psychosocial predictors of drug involvement among secondary school students(Journal of social sciences, 2016) Asagba, R.B.; Chovwen, C. O.; Alarape, A.I.; Agberotimi, S. F."Predictors of drug involvement among secondary school students in Ibadan were examined in this study. Two hundred and four (204) students comprising 113 males and 91 females, whose age ranged between 13 and 25 years (M = 16.32, S.D. = 1.81) participated in the study. Data collected with a structured questionnaire were subjected to independent sample t-test, and regression analysis. Psychosocial factors (life purpose, need for achievement and self-esteem) significantly predicted drug abuse [F (6, 113) = 7.75; p < .01, R2 = .29]. Participants with low score on life purpose reported higher substance abuse than those with high score on life purpose, t (161) = 2.62, p <.05 ; those with low score on the need for achievement reported higher substance abuse than those with high score on the need for achievement, t (162) = 4.09, p < .01 ; those with low score on the need for achievement reported higher substance abuse than those with high score on the need for achievement t (162) = 2.62, p <.05; female participants reported higher substance abuse than male counterparts, t (176) = - 4.05, p <.01). In conclusion, it is expedient that efforts be intensified on actions that will reawaken the strive for excellence and sense of self worth through engagement in self development activities, thereby minimizing the prevalence of substance abuse among Nigerian youths."Item The pursuit of democracy in Nigeria(The International Forum for Logotherapy, 1996) Asagba, R.B.
