Item An assessment of helping behaviour of University of Ibadan campus resident Students(2001) Balogun, S. K.; Shenge, N. A,Item Fear of sudden death and dying among resident postgraduate students of University of Ibadan(2000) Shenge, A. N.; Balogun, S. K.Item Impact of personality and structural design on job satisfaction among bank workers(2001-07) Ekore, J. O.; Balogun, S. K.; Tamen, FThe aim of the study was to examine the impact of personality and changes in office design on employees job satisfaction among bankers. The 98 participants were drawn from 4 commercial banks in 2 southwestern cities namely Lagos and Ibadan. The participants had a mean age of 51 years and standard deviation of 3.85 for males and a mean age of 32 years and a standard deviation of 3.3 for female participants. The instrument used for the collection of data were the introversion (extraversion scales of the Eysenck personality Questionnaire, and job satisfaction index. Result showed that Extroverts (mean = 65: 74) experienced significantly higher job satisfaction than introverts (mean = 58.84), F=(1,94) = 8.50, p<.05. Employees in open systems (mean=63.56) experienced significantly higher job satisfaction than those in closed systems (mean=57.32) F=(1,94)=6.29, p<.05. However, personality and office design did not show significant interaction effect on job satisfaction F(1,94)=1.25, p<.O5 The implication of the study are that banks and other service organization need to ascertain the suitability of their workers to different job conditions. Similarly, the importance of workplace/ environment design and its overbearing effects on employee productivity need to be recognized by service and manufacturing organizationsItem Modeling perceived quality of life for people living near a Nigerian dumpsite(International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation, 2012) OIapegba, P.O; Balogun, S. K.; Paul Chism, N. F.In response to the rapid and unplanned growth that has led to the colocation of residential communities with refuse dumpsites in Lagos, Nigeria, we conducted a cross-sectional investigation of individuals living within the Olusosun community near a refuse dumpsite. Participants were 479 persons (>18 years of age, 52.6% male) who lived within 1 km of a refuse dumpsite. We examined the relationships between perceived quality of life and predictor variables, self-esteem, learned helplessness, and environmental expectations. Data analysis using structural equation modeling procedures partially supported our hypothesized explanatory model. Specifically, we found self-esteem had direct and indirect effects, through environmental expectations, on perceived quality of life. However, the indirect effect of learned helplessness on perceived quality of life was not supported. A limitation of our study, selective recruitment of participants who could read and write in English, emphasizes the need for future studies to recruit indigenous language speakers.Item Personality and need factors in career aspirations of prospective Nigerian University undergraduates(Department of Psychology, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Nigeria, 2000-06) Balogun, S. K.; Shenge, N. A,This research examined personality and need factors in career aspiration of prospective Nigerian University undergraduates. It identified the career needs of 454 introverted and extroverted secondary school students preparing for Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination. Subjects career aspirations, defined as a person's conscious desire, intention and efforts which are aimed at getting involved in a sequence of occupations, jobs and positions in his or her lifetime, cut across 8 different occupational groupings. Personality factors were defined as behavioural attributes or characteristics which an individual is distinctly identified with in some known or unknown degrees and over an enduring period of time. Need factors described those things or benefits which attract a person to aspire to make a certain career. Using partial correlation and Pearson correlation statistics, subjects' responses on career aspiration need questionnaire were analyzed. Results showed a general dominance of money, and popularity needs among subjects in the different occupational grouping Discussion centred on the need for understanding individual and group differences as a way of maximizing organizational productivity and individuals' job satisfaction. The practical implications of the findings for occupational counseling and job placement were also mentioned.Item "Predicting public attitude towards the amnesty initiative in the Niger delta: the role of trust in government, geopolitical zones and religiosity. "(Ekpoma journal of social sci en ces, 2011) Balogun, S. K.; OIapegba, P.O.Armed conflict and insurgencies in the Niger Delta over resource control and environmental degradation dated back to the 1960s with the Isaac Adaka Bora's led Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF). Successive governments had attempted military options and some palliative measures to deal with the issues without much success. These strategies were reviewed by the regime of late President Umaru Musa Yaradu'a who introduced the amnesty initiative to bring the situation under control. This initiative has given some respite in the orgy of violence hitherto experienced in the region. However, there are mixed reactions as to the general acceptability of the amnesty as well as the sincerity of government on the policy. This cross-sectional study investigated the role of religiosity, geo-political zones and public trust in government in predicting the acceptance of amnesty initiative among the general populace. Two hundred and thirty people cutting across the major strata of the society were randomly sampled to respond to a questionnaire. Findings revealed that there was no significant effect of respondents' geo-political zones on their attitude toward the .amnesty initiative. Meanwhile, public trust in government and religiosity' jointly and independently significantly predicted attitude toward the-amnesty initiative. Against the background, it is suggested that government should embark on activities that will further enhance its credibility and foster trust in the citizen. Additionally, faith-based approach should also be adopted in tackling the violence in the Niger Delta.Item Psychosocial factors influencing aggressive driving among commercial and private automobile drivers in Lagos metropolis(Elsevier, 2012) Balogun, S. K.; Shenge, N. A,; Oladipo, S. E.Using 300 purposively selected private and commercial automobile drivers in Lagos, Nigeria as participants and with a combination of FGD, interview and questionnaire. The study investigated the influence of psychosocial factors such as (locus of control, age, years of driving experience, marital status and educational status) on aggressive behavior among the drivers based on the frustration - aggression hypothesis. Given the chaotic traffic situation in Lagos, premise was that the aggressive instincts in human beings would be more pronounced among the drivers thereby negatively affecting their behavior. Result showed that commercial drivers were significantly higher on aggressive driving behavior. Younger drivers were more aggressive than older ones. Aggressiveness was attributed to other factors in the environment other than the drivers themselves. The need for training of drivers in proper and acceptable way of driving within their cultural context was emphasized.Item Running head: GSM consumption value scale development and validation of global system mobile (gsm) consumption value scale in Nigeria(Scottish journal of arts, social sciences and scientific studies, 2012) Balogun, S. K.; OIapegba, P.O.The specific purpose of this study was the development and validation of Global System Mobile Consumption Value Scale (GSM-CVS) using Nigerian sample. To this end, 40 items were generated from literature and interviews with GSM users, items analysis through pilot study that involved 104 participants led to the dropping of 11 items that loaded below 30 thereby leaving 29 items for the main study. The scale yielded Alpha reliability coefficient of .84. Using accidental and purposive sampling techniques, a total of 763 people from both the northern and southern part of the country participated in the study. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Varimax with Kaiser Normalization rotation method yielded 6 factors with eighteen values greater than 1.00. The factors were found to have correlations with one another, while age differences were not found. The overall contribution of the factors was less than 10% with functional value having the greatest effect followed by health value while monetary, social, emotional and safety did not have significant effect on consumption value. In fall, it is established that this scale is a valid measure of GSM consumption value.Item Successful ageing: a psychosocial perspective(Stirling-Harden Publishers (Nig.) Ltd., 2001) Balogun, S. K.; Shenge, N. A,Item Thank God my car is born again so Am I: naturalistic observation of religious inscriptions on vehicles in Nigeria(2008) Balogun, S. K.; Shenge, N. A,; Idegwu, I. G.The study investigated the frequency of religious inscriptions, the use of religious stickers, and religious orientation amongst vehicle owners in Lagos city of Nigeria. A naturalistic observation of 430 cars, 140 commercial buses and 40 trailers was carried out at first, then a sample of 100 participants (68 males and 32 females) selected from a cross section, of private car owners, and commercial drivers in Lagos metropolis were given questionnaire to-complete. The independent variable was religion. The dependent variable was measured with Sticker use and Religious Behaviour Scale (SRBS) (X=39.90; S.D 6.09) and Religious Orientation Questionnaire (ROQ) (X = 12.58); S.D = 4.44). The results obtained revealed that four hypotheses were significant. With this, it was concluded that though there are more religious stickers than other stickers 011 cars and other vehicles in Nigeria, religious sticker use does not imply religiousity.Item Typology of human behavioral traits for strategic customer relations(2001) Balogun, S. K.; Shenge, N. A,This paper examined trait, personality, attitude and behaviour as they relate to strategic customer relations practice. Defined as a generalized and focalized neuropsychic system (peculiar to the individual) with the capacity to render many stimuli functionally equivalent, and to initiate and guide consistent forms of adaptive and expressive behaviour, trait was observed to have more than nominal existence. Attitude, on the other hand was defined as the constellation of those relatively enduring traits that characterize one individual from the other just as personality was seen as the overall effect the individual has on other-people. While also bringing to bear the relevance of type A and B behaviour and self concept on strategic customer relations, the paper stressed the need for public relations practioners to, as a matter of regularity, employ psychological principles in the practice of their profession. This was based on the paper's assertion that such employment of psychological principles will maximize public relations results.Item Women and leadership: what is the noise all about?(The Nigerian Psychological Association, 2000-07) Shenge, N. A.; Balogun, S. K.The controversy surrounding the issue of women and leadership position is as old as the history and creation of women itself. The issue, if not "liberation of women" from whatever perceived bondage, would be that of "equality with men", or of recent that of "women empowerment". This controversy would be this heated up if the creation of women and their assigned roles is traced from biblical injunction and that, which is naturally and socially determined. A woman, though as a human being may aspire to whatever height in any chosen field she so desires, should not do so at the expense of the role assigned her by nature for which she is best suited. This view is what the paper would attempt to elucidate to show why energy should not be dissipated on whether women should ''fight'' what should be the norm rather than exception on leadership matters. After all, what is leadership if placed in its right perspective?
