Item A Socio-Legal Approach to Violence Against Women in Nigeria(2015) Akanle,O; Busari,DGender constructions are not obvious human categories and factors amongst the most contested academic and scholarly issues. This is partly because gender is a sensitive subject, with varying conceptions dependent on contexts of human actions. Among the most affected subjects of power relations is also gender, thus making it amenable to many interpretations and intervention efforts. Due to the centrality of gender issues to economic, political, social and general practical existences, Nigerian governments over the years have instituted policies and laws to address the issues related to gender. Unfortunately, gender sentiments, biases and orientations that the laws and policies are meant to address also still affect gender constructs and the laws/ policies themselves in a way that calls the policies and the laws to question in terms of efficacy, ultimately. This demonstrates the deepseatedness of gender and its complex yet dynamic nature as it interfaces power and sensitiveness as different categories of humans interact. What is then the place of the laws in addressing gender relations? What are the natures of dominant legal systems in the face of unequal power-play as they affect gender? What are the gaps and the strengths of gender-focused legal systems in Nigeria? Since gender is not a self-evident human category, what are the pathways to a more positive gender relations in Nigeria and how can socio-legal systems more proactively and more positively address gendered human conditions? These are indicative research questions this paper addresses. This paper reviews and analyzes the gender-related components of the Nigerian legal systems and policies in manners that will benefit scholarship and practice.Item Contemporary issues in social research(Ibadan University Press, Publishing House, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2020) Busari,DItem Exploring African Traditional Systems of Illness Diagnosis: A case study of Ifa System in Yoruba Society(2019) Busari,DEvery culture has traditional knowledge, which forms their universal view and understanding around which life is well defined. An example of this is evident among the Yoruba people of South-western Nigeria, whose cosmological demystification is derived from Ifa - a divine oral text of corpuses. There are many verses (odu as the Yoruba call them) in Ifa, each of which has holistic approach to human lqe etc. A major part of Ifa themes is the healing system through which etiology and diagnosis are carried out for curative purpose. However, this aspect of indigenous knowledge has not received enough empirical research attention. Thus, a study was conducted to reveal the system of divine Ifa diagnosis within the Yoruba culture in Nigeria. Using exploratory research design, ethno-methodological theory served as a framework for the study. Hence, the study was carried out basically by qualitative technique where 4 focus group discussions (FGD) comprising twelve discussants and 16 In-depth Interview where employed as instrument of data collection from ifa priests referred to as ~babalawo and patients. The data were content analyzed. The study found that the Ifa diagnostic method was systematic and perceived to be a divine way of seeking God's revelation on any health challenges in order to provide a to provide a very comprehensive and holistic cure to any human health imbalance. Therefore, it is pertinent for policy makers as well as the enthusiasts of African self-generated development, to preserve, modernize and promote Ifa therapy system for sustainable development's sake.Item Female genital mutilation as sexual disability:perceptions of women and their spouses in Akure,Ondo State, Nigeria(2017) Owojuyigbe,M; Bolorunduro,M.E; Busari,DDisability encompasses the limitations on an individual’s basic physical activities, and the consequent social oppressions such individual faces in society. In this regard, the limitation on the use of some parts of the genitals in a patriarchal system is considered a form of disability. Cultural Libertarianism was employed as a theoretical framework. The paper presents the results of a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria, with 10 male and 12 female respondents purposively selected through a snowball sampling for in-depth interviews. The findings present the justifications provided for the practice of FGM, and victims’ perceptions of how it affects their sexual relations. Many scholars have offered varying degree of definitions but the main challenge noticed in the definition, is the multiple definitions based on individual scholar’s orientation or ideology .Another problem poised by these definitions of the concept is that of multi-level and multi-dimensional nature. Contemporary scholars of social cohesion have defied a way of treating the concept as a phenomenon with a multi-dimensional feature or as a kind of potentially construct concept structured around many varying indices. Academics and policy makers have unanimously arrived at a consensus that ,"Social Cohesion" as a concept, is enjoying an ever-increasing popularity. Inspite of this perceived ubiquity in many literatures, the concept of social cohesion is still a hugely ill-defined concept that exact meaning varies from one scholar to another. While some scholars or researchers understand the concept as being synonymous to trust, solidarity and peace; many others tend to be of the view that the concept can incorporate such terms as inclusiveness, poverty and social capital. Sociologists however have associated or aligned the concept to ideas that includes social integration and system integration. In furtherance of the search for a clear definition, sociologists have attempted to simplify the challenges embedded in its definition. They highlighted interest in developing a general theory of social cohesion that is confronted with a complex body of work that involves various definitions of social cohesion and engaged specialized literatures on particular dimensions of social cohesion (e.g., membership turnover, organizational commitment, categorical identifications, interpersonal attachments, network structures) and encourage lines of inquiry that is focused on the specific types of groups (e.g., families, schools, military units and sports teams. The apparent theoretical confusion pointed out by other scholar critically is geared towards a critical view of the concept of cohesion which could be viewed as nothing beyond a "quasi-concept" or "concept of convenience" that can be seen to be flexible enough to allow for tweaking, meanderings and also offer rooms for necessities associated with political action in its everyday activities. The goal of the article therefore is to proffer an in-depth analysis of how the concept of social cohesion has been defined and applied in the literature, taking into cognizance the two traditions used in analyzing social cohesion. The first that has its origin in the disciplines of social sciences such as Political Science, Sociology, Social Psychology etc. Coming after social science discipline is the more recent and increasingly significant approaches that were formulated by policy-makers.Item The absentee spouse phenomenon and spousal coping strategies in Ibadan, South-Western Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan, Nigeria., 2013) Akanle,O; Adebayo,A.O; Busari,DMajor incentives for marriage and family life are cohabitation, companionship, control economics and regular coital relationships for both procreation and pleasure. Infrastructure of the stomach is a politically induced lexicon that gives a diametrically opposed verdict of representation and empowerment. 'Stomach infrastructure' is a reality projected by the Nigerian politicians on the vulnerable electorate who for poverty are encouraged to mortgage their fundamental right of freedom to choose who governs them in exchange for immediate gratification in monetary, food, or other material terms. The literal import of the transactional terminology of 'stomach infrastructure' is the moving of the meaning of infrastructure out of the context of where it is normally found and linking it with the stomach instead. The contradiction generated by the contending forces of 'infrastructure of the stomach' and 'infrastructure for the stomach' is seemingly based on a play on words and plurality of ideologies that takes the meaning of infrastructure out of the context of where it is normally found, linking it instead with the stomach. But the source of its impact is not merely and only linguistic; more properly, it is socio-economic. This binary thinking and nuance dominate, dictate and energise the structure of the Nigeria electoral process; it is either a support for stomach infrastructure which invariably can stand for vote-buying or support for infrastructure of the stomach that may translate to theoverall development of the entire social structure and system
