Item Continuous assessment for improved higher education achievement in business management(2011-04) Onuka, A. O. U.; Durowoju, E. O"This study investigated the extent to which continuous assessments (CAs) improved higher education learning achievement in Business Management. Survey research design was used. Multistage sampling technique was employed, resulting in sample sizes of 10 lecturers and 200 students from two higher institutions of learning. A continuous assessment for improved learning scale was designed for data collection. The data from the study were analysed using descriptive and correlation statistics. Three research questions were tested and the results showed that test and individual assignment are most commonly used techniques for measuring students' academic performances while group assignments were rarely used. The result also indicated that the group assignments were rarely used. The result also indicated that the lecturers do not use the feedback to provide remediation and do not mark continuous assessment test while some do not have proper records for CA scores. Most of the lecturers agreed that the most frequently used continuous assessment techniques were tests and assignments. Furthermore, there was significant relationship between continuous assessments and students, achievement in Business Management. Consequent upon these, it is recommended that lecturers should make use of other continuous assessment techniques such as group assignment, peer assessment, projects, term paper, and classroom observation to measure students' academic achievement among others. They should, likewise, ensure that remediation is provided. Records of continuous assessment scores should be kept for immediate and delayed remediate. Finally, seminars and workshops should be organized to educate lecturers and stakeholders in the education industry on the essence of continuous assessments in improving achievement at the higher education level"Item Curtailing examination fraud for improved quality assurance in the African examination system(Association for Educational Assesment in Africa (AEAA), 2011) Onuka, A. O. U.; Durowoju, E. OThe recurrent incidence of examination malpractices on the African continent particulary in Nigeria calls for drastic measures to arrest the situation. The study investigates the nature, causes, methods and effects of examination malpractices and sought out how the quality of regional examinating systems can be assured therby. The study was a descriptive survey design using ex-post facto research type to collect data. The sample was made up of 80 teachers and 400 students, respectively. Data were analysed using percentages, graphs and charts. The findings were that examination malpractice occurs at all levels of the system in diverse ways: leakage of question papers in the process of setting, printing, packaging, storing, and distribution. Others included: impersonation, undue favoritism by invigilators of students, bribing or influencing examination staff, councils' allotment of choice examination centres termed "special" "miracle" centres and inflation or reduction of canditates' original scores by those who mark or grade the scripts. It was also discovered that students carry out examination malpractices by various means: desktop publishing and laptop publishing. Some of the causes of this examinational menace included greed, corruption, dishonesty, indolence and lethargy, students' poor study habits and compromise. The effects and the way outproblem were discussed. Recommendations included stakeholders must corporately fight against this vice. Communities, government, corporate bodies, and examinating bodies should come together in the region to educate stakeholders, from time to time, on the appropriate teaching and learning techniques as well as conduct researches that will improve classroom interaction and preparation for the examinations.Item Effective and creative teaching of business/commercial secondary schools(Royal People (Nigeria) Limited, Ibadan, 2013) Onuka, A. U.Item Effective classroom management as determinants of students' achievement in economics in public secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo state(Department of Educational Administration & Planning, Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria., 2012-07) Durowoju, E. O; Onuka, A. O. U.The paper examined how teacher self-efficacy and teacher effective classroom management determined both interactively and individually students' achievement in secondary economics in Ibadan metropolis of Oyo state, Nigeria. Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select six out of eleven local government area councils in Ibadan, 60 schools and subsequently 60 SS economics teachers as subject in study while their classes were used intact. Two instruments and students' classroom examination records in economics were used in collecting the data for the exercise. Findings were that while teacher self-efficacy and teacher classroom management effectiveness individually significantly determined the academic achievement of the students in economics when combined. It was, therefore, concluded that the latter might be as a result of the inability of the teachers to combine the two variables effectively or they were ill-motivated so they did not possess the capacity to effectively do so. It was recommended that teachers should be encoruaged to imbibe the spirit self-efficacy in carrying their assignments and be trained on how to effectively manage classroom effectively as well as efficiently.Item Essential ingredients of effective management(2012) Onuka, A. O. U.; Durowoju, E. OItem Evaluation and research communication(2012) Onuka, A. O. U.; Durowoju, E. OThis study was undertaken to find out how effectively evaluation and research findings are disseminated to the various public expected to consume them. Survey design was used in the investigation and random sampling techniques was used to select 350 subjects from five sectors of the economy as well as twenty researchers from Univeristy of Ibadan and NISER, while a research and evaluation communication scale was used for data collection. The data were analyzed using descriptive and correlation statistics. The results shows that there was no significant relationship between the number of evaluation and researches conducted and thier communication to users. It also shows that most researchers embark on research and evaluation promotion purpose while the findings of those evaluation and research are disseminated through seminars, conferences and journals. Based on these, it was recommended that communication should be part of evaluation and research activities from the onset to the disseminatioon of findings, that there should be agency for dissemination of findings which could disseminate outcome through appropraite media to relevant publics, organisations and philanthropists should fund the dissemination of research findings and that research and evaluators should endeavour to publicize the findings of their works through workshops, conferences and books and or journals publications as well as through both print and electroniv mediaItem The mode of public university education curriculum implementation in Oyo state(2012) Onuka, A. O. U; Durowoju, E. OThis study investigated the mode of higher education curriculum implementation among higher education teachers in Oyo state, Nigeria. The research adopted survey desing and three research question asked. The population for the study consisted of all the lecturers in universities in Oyo state. Multistage sampling techniques was used in this study. One federal and one state universities were purposively selected because they were the only federal and state universities in Oyo state. From each university, four faculties were randomly chosen. From each faculty four departments were randomly selected making a total of sixteen departments. 5 lecturers and 10 students were randomly chosen from each department totaling 80 lecturers and 160 students. Mode of implementating Higher Education Curriculum Scale (MIHECS) and Students' Perception of Problem Associatied with Curriculum Implementation and Possible Solution Scale (SPPCIPSS) were developed to generate data for the study. The research questions were answered using descriptive statistics. Results revealed that 25% of the lecturers always have access to the content of the curriculum, while 50% disclosed that they often do. Also, 95% of the students and 68% of the lecturers agreed thatthe lecture rooms are not conductive for the teaching-learning process while 05% of the students and 32% of the lecutrers disagreed.69% of the lecturers and 75% of the students suggested that workshops on curriculum implementation should be mounted for lecturers, while 56% of the lecturers and 88% of the students said that head of units/departments should seek for feedback from students on thier lecturer's performance. Recommendations were: workshops on curriculum implementation should be floated for lecturers at the national and state levels, while curriculum should be effectively implemented with the use of relevant instructional materials. also, lecturers and students should learn how to and indeed utilize ICT facilities to enhance teaching and learning process.Item Motivation and gender as determinants of manpower preparation through junior secondary business studies in Akinyele local government of Oyo state, Nigeria(2008) Onuka, A. OThe paper considered the effect of motivation and gender individually and compositely on student academic/cognitive achievement inJS business studies in Akinyele local government council area of Oyo state because the subject is the elementary preparatory ground for future managers.The population for the study was made up of all JSS business studies students in the local government area. Two-stage sampling was employed to randomly select four schools out of thirty-five junior secondary schols in the area and secondly to randomly select an intact arm each from each of the sampled schools in the study.Two instruments constructed and validated by the researchers were administered on the subjects; the resulting data were then collated and analysed using correlation and t-test on the basis of motivation and gender. Results show that motivation has no significant relationship with students'cognitive achievement; likewise, gender also has no significant effect on students' cognitive achievement in business studies. The population for the study was made up of all Economics students in the Local Government Area. Two-stage sampling was employed to randomly select four schools from forty Senior Secondary Schools in the area and an intact arm of SSll from each of the sampled schools. Two instruments constructed and validated by the researchers were administered on the subjects; the resulting data were then collated and analysed using correlation and t-test. Results showed that motivation is positively related with students' cognitive achievement; likewise, gender also has no significant effect on students' cognitive achievement in Economics. The result also showed that there was no significant difference in the cognitive achievement in Economic on gender basis. Recommendations included: that all learners irrespective of gender and family background be given equal level playing ground in their study; that every student irrespective of sex or background be given the same level of encouragement and the necessary equipment be made available in the same quantum to all student for equal access and opportunities to the study of Economics. OThis study looked into the roles of some stakeholders ineffectively curbing examination malpratices in Nigeria. Examination as an instrument for decision - making, always create fear and anxiety in the heart of the candidates and other stakeholders, a major reason, why saome candidates and somee other stakeholders engage in examination malpractices. To eradicate this menace are: the government should introduce effective and comprehensive legislation, provide strigent penalties against the use of unfair means in examinations. The government should also ensure that anybody caught in the act of examination malpractices is adequately purnished irrespective of his status or position in the society. The various examining bodies should collaborate to build large examination halls across the nation. They should also collaborate with communities, government, and corporate bodies in building large examination halls. Teachers should ensure that they attend school and classes regularly and endeavour to bring the content of the study to real life situation with use of relevant teaching materials. Parents should provide all the necessary materials including textbooks that will help improve students' performaces, pay unscheduled visits to their children in school to ascertain whether they are making progress or not. It was equally suggested that parents/guardians should establish a positive parent-child relationship with thier children for the progress or not. OThe study investigated the influence of teacher-student relationship and parent-child relationship on students' academic performance in senior secondary school commerce in Akinyele local government council area of Oyo state, Nigeria.Six schools were selected, making a total sample size of 250. Teacher-Student and Parent-Child Relationship Scale (TSPCRS) and students raw examination score records in commerce were the instruments that were employed to gather data for the study. Correlation and multiple regression statistics were used in analysing the data. Result showed that both of teacher-student and parent-child relationship had influence on students' performance in senior school commerce.
