Item An Assessment of availability, adequacy and utilisation of information and communication technology in universities in South- West, Nigeria(Institute of Education, University of Ibadan unbehalf of Participating West Africa Universities and Ministries of Education, 2018) Ibode, O. F.; Olamigoke, G. O.The study examined the assessment of availability, adequacy, and utilisation of information and communication technology (ICT) in universities in South-West, Nigeria. The ex-post facto design was adopted, to collect information in which three states and three federal universities were purposively selected from South- Western, Nigeria. One hundred students and ten lecturers were randomly selected from each of the three federal universities in the zone. Two validated instruments: Information and Communication Technology Facilities Checklist (ICTFC) and Lecturers’ Questionnaire (LQ, r = 0.82) were used for data collection. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. Between 84% and 100% of the respondents indicated that ICT facilities were available, while between 85% and 100% of them indicated that they were inadequate. The level of utilisation of the ICT facilities is low as indicated by 57%o to 100% of the respondents. Irregular power supply 100%, poor funding 90% and lack of internet facilities 83.33%, were identified as some of the major constraints militating against the use of ICT facilities. It was, therefore, recommended that there should be adequate provision of ICT facilities and resources in our tertiary institutions. The National Universities Commission (NUC) should of a necessity review the course contents of university education, to compulsorily incorporate ICT utilisation as a standard for teaching and learning, while university authorities should support lecturers to utilise ICT facilities while teaching.Item Attitude of students towards the use of computer in education(Department of Science and Technology Education,Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, 2017) Ibode, O. F.The use of computer in education has increasingly become prominent in most part of the world. Therefore the study examined the attitude of students of St. Augustine College of Education, Akoka, Lagos. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 175 respondents. The instrument used for data gathering was a questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.73. Descriptive statistics and T-test was used to analyze the data. The study revealed that students have positive attitude towards the use of computer. Also, the study revealed that there is no significant relationship between the male and female perception of students attitude to computer use in education. Therefore, the study recommends that computer studies should be inculcated and made compulsory at all levels of education. Government should make adequate provision of computers to the schools at all levels. The teachers should be advised to encourage the female students to improve on their attitudes toward the use of computer in education to be at par with their male counterparts. Students should be motivated to incorporate ICT into the source of learning tools as personal assessment of their computer competence improved. Lastly, the schools should give proper maintenance culture to the students to handle the computer properly.Item Classroom management and use of instructional aids(Institute of Education, University of Ibadan on behalf of Participating West Africa Universities and Ministries of Education, 2004-03) Ibode, O. F.Classroom management, preparation and handling of instructional materials are crucial issues in present day teaching and learning. CIass room management in this context is the act or skill in the organization and presentation of lessons in such a way that all learners are actively involved in learning. Effective classroom management is not only positively related to certain attributes of the teacher, but it is also positively linked to the quality of the school environment and the nature of decision making process adopted by the school authority. As regards instructional materials and their preparation and use, this paper highlights their importance as instructional aids, especially the use of the computer in education. The present paper further discusses the various ways in which teaching aids could be obtained.Item Computer-assisted-instruction in the classroom(PEN Services, 2005) Ibode, O. F.Item Educational and cultural factors as predictors of examination malpractice among SSCE candidates in Benue State(Stirling-Horden Publishers (Nig.) Ltd. Ibadan, 2012) Ibode, O. F.; Pila, N.Item Educational resources as predictors of effectiveness vocational and entrepreneurial skill acquisition programme in tertiary institutions in in Ogun state(Halygraph (Nigeria), 2015-12) Ibode, O. F.; Awotedu, A. W.Nigerians from various quarters have continued to advocate for inclusion of vocational and entrepreneurial skill acquisition as a means of ameliorating poverty, youth and graduate unemployment in the midst of a depressed economy. Some tertiary institutions in the Nigeria have risen to the occasion by establishing the centre for vocational and entrepreneurial skill acquisition, in response to the various calls for the need to do so. In order for the programme to be effective, there is need to consider the input variables that are in place for the programme to achieve its stated goals and objectives. The study therefore investigated some educational resources as predictors of the effectiveness of vocational and entrepreneurial skill acquisition programme in some tertiary institutions in Ogun state Nigeria. The subjects of the study included 534 trainees and 58 vocational skill tutors who were selected through the simple random sampling technique. Two questionnaires (Vocational Trainees' Perception Questionnaire [VTPQ] and Tutors' Perception Questionnaire [TPQ] were used for data collection, while multiple regression analysis was used for data analysis in the study. The findings of the study revealed that educational resources (human, financial and material resources) reliably predict the effectiveness of vocational and entrepreneurial skill acquisition programme. In the light this, it was recommended that the three educational resources should be adequately provided for and judiciously utilized to ensure the effectiveness of VOS programme. Furthermore, it was also recommended that a vocational trust fund organisation should be established to help supplement institutional financial inputs to cater for human and material resources needed for the effectiveness of the VOS programme.Item Educational technology in the service of the secondary school teacher(Powerhouse Press and Publishers, Ibadan, 2002) Ibode, O. F.Item Effect of yoruba language on primary school pupils’ academic achievement in numeracy in Ibadan, Oyo State(Department of English, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2017) Ibode, O. F.; Lasaki, O. A.The study investigated the effect of Yoruba language (mother tongue) on pupils' academic achievement in Ibadan. The study adopted pretest- posttest control group quasi-experimental research design. Simple random sampling technique was used to select three local government areas and two primary schools in each of the local government areas using intact classes that were distinctly located from one another within the selected local government areas. The researcher randomly assigned four schools to the Yoruba Language Teaching Strategy (YLTS) and the remaining two schools to the conventional method (English Language) The participants comprised 197 primary' four pupils. One treatment package [Yoruba language instructional package (YLIP)] and one instrument [Numeracy Achievement Test (NAT)] were used in the study. The ability of the package and the instrument to measure the skill it has been designed for was established by the researchers. Thus the reliability co-efficient of 0.76 was obtained using K.R20. The data collected were analyzed using Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The result reveals that Yoruba language has significant effect on pupils, academic achievement in numeracy. Also, school locations do not significantly affect the academic achievement of primary school pupils and no significant interaction effect of Yoruba language and school location is revealed. The researchers advocated that Yoruba language as a medium of instruction should be used in teaching numeracy at the primary school level for the purpose of improving academic achievement. The federal government should take a second look at the policy of use of mother tongue for instruction to cover all level of primary school education, in order to prepare them for effective secondary' school education. The government should endeavour to monitor the teachers to know if the policies are being implemented. Keywords: Yoruba language, school location, academic achievement, primary school pupils.Item The effects of bilingual mode of instructions on pupil’s academic achievement in basic science in Oyo state basic schools(2013) Ibode, O. F.; Ojo, M. M.It adopted quasi- experimental approach. A multistage sampling technique was used to draw a sample of200 basic six (6) pupils from four schools. The instrument used for the data collection was Basic Science achievement Test (BSAT). It was developed by the researchers. Trial test of the instrument was done using Kuder Richardson 21. The reliability coefficient is 0.80. The result of the study shows that the bilingual mode of instruction had significant effect on Basic Science F (1.191) = 57.10, p< 0.05 Partial Eta Square = .230. Therefore the effect size (23%) is moderate. The bilingual mode of instruction also has significant main effect on gender in achievement of pupils in Basic Science F (1191)=9.76, p= .002 partial eta squared = .049 . However the effect size (4.9%) is low. Therefore, it was recommended that policy makers should include the use of bilingual mode of instruction in policy formulation for basic schools.Item Effects of bilingual teaching strategy on pupil’s achievement in mathematics in Oyo state primary schools(2013) Ibode, O. F.; Adeteju, C. O.After a careful analytical observation, Primary Education which is the foundation upon which further education is built is considered not to be at its best presently in Nigeria. The mode of instruction used by teachers of Mathematics (being a core subject) seems to be contributory to the performance of pupils in primary schools. This study investigated the effect of Bilingual teaching Strategy on pupils’ achievement in Mathematics with the view to improving such. The research adopted the pre-test, post-test control group using 2×2 factorial matrix. The subjects consisted of 141 primary five pupils. Two local governments were randomly selected out of the four local governments in Oyo town. Each of the local government was clustered into two groups; two schools were randomly selected from the two groups and randomly assigned to treatment, making four schools. Four instruments, namely; Mathematics Achievement Test, Pupils Attitude Scale, Teacher Instructional Guide on Bilingual Teaching Strategy and Conventional Teaching Strategy, were used to collect data. Three hypotheses were tested and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The result of the study showed that there was a significant effect of treatment (teaching strategies) on pupils’ achievement. [F (1,141) =185.372, P< 0.05]. Mean score of Bilingual teaching strategy is ( =13.67), and conventional group (control) scored the least ( =7.10) in achievement in Mathematics. It revealed no significant main effect of attitude [F (1, 141) =1.258, P>0.05]. Findings also imply that pupils’ attitude does not serve as hindrance to their achievement in Mathematics; among other discoveries. The work, therefore, recommends, inter-alia, that Mathematics teachers should utilize bilingual approach to support teaching of Mathematics in primary schools to enhance pupils’ performance.Item Effects of parental socio-economic status on students' performance in some senior secondary subjects in Oyo State(Network of People in Academics, 2009-04) Ibode, O. F.; Adeyemo, S. A.The study investigated the effects of parental socio-economic status on students’ performance in some senior secondary school subject in Oyo State. Two hundred and four SS2 students were randomly selected from twelve secondary schools. The twelve secondary schools were randomly selected from three senatorial districts of Oyo State. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on the students parental Socio-Economic Status. Also, a structured Score Recording sheet was used to obtain the students’ 2008/2009 academic scores in the first term results in English language, mathematics, biology and government. The data was analysed, using descriptive statistics, ANOVA and T-test. The findings from the study revealed that students from low socio-economic homes performed better than those students from high and middle socio-economic homes in school subject, such as English language, Mathematics, Biology and Government. There is also no significant difference in the performance of students from monogamous homes and those from polygamous homes. Furthermore, the finding also revealed that family size does not have significant effect on students’ performance in the school subject involved. The study therefore concluded that students from high, middle or low economic background should not take things for granted but must student hard in order to excel in their academic. The study then called on parents and Government to make the issue of education in the country a priority.Item Effects of the use of information and communication technology (ICT) on students’ achievement in english lexis and structure(2010-10) Ibode, O. There is increasing need for parents' active participation in the assessment of their children at home. This study investigated the influence of parental assessment culture on primary school pupils' academic performance in English and Social Studies in Benue State. Three research questions were developed for the study, which is a survey and correlation study. A sample of200primary six pupils from six schools was randomly selected using the hat and draw procedure. The six primary schools were also selected using random sampling technique. Rating scale and English and Social Studies achievement tests were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics and Pearson moment correlation were used as statistical tools for data analysis. The findings revealed that parents have low level of assessment culture in evaluating academic works of their primary school children. There was low positive correlation between parental assessment culture and pupils' academic performance in English Studies (r = .042, p= .556), whereas, parents assessment culture was positively related to pupils' performance in Social Studies (r = .780, p=.010). It is recommended, among others, that parents should cultivate the culture of assessing their children academic activities at home, and provide feedback to the school on children's academic behaviours at home. facilities while teaching.Item The influence of some indices of accountability for quality educational programmes in Oyo state, Nigeria(IJNRL, 2009-06) Ibode, O. F.Accountability was traditionally used to refer to public service, in which stewardship of public funds must be accounted. Accountability as an educational concept, in recent years, has to do with advancing the effectiveness of school systems. If educators are to be accountable for students’ performance, the expected performance should be clearly stated and adequately measured. Accountability should also provide information on how money has been spent, especially on infrastructure/facilities, teachers salaries and what return has been made on investment in terms of students’academic achievement. In this regard, researchers (Obemeata 1995, and Yoloye 2003, 2004) emphasized the need for accountability to demonstrate returns of taxpayer’s money invested in education. For instance, Mark (2009), in a paper titled “Looking into Linking Teacher Pay to Student Performance” stated that President Obama “laid out his vision for education... including linking teacher pay to student performance”. For accountability to flourish there must be a positive link between accountability on the teachers ’ part and the salaries they are paid for their particular job which is teaching. Schrag added that teachers are answerable for what they do.Item Investigation of factors responsible for poor reading habits among secondary school students in Lagos State, Nigeria(2015) Ibode, O. F.A cultivated reading habit is crucial in education because it is the vehicle that drives and enhances learning in any field. One thousand students who were randomly selected from twenty senior secondary schools in Lagos city constituted the sample for the study. The study revealed that 60% of the respondents’ considerable part of their time watching European football matches on the television instead of reading their textbooks. The study also revealed that 80% of the students spend their prime time watching home videos on African Magic or Nollywood as against reading their textbooks. The study further shows that most of the students pay more attention to modem technologies like cell phones, social media and computer games. Furthermore, the finding of the study shows that reading activities are not encouraged in most of the sample schools. Therefore, the study recommends that stakeholders in education should set up a monitoring team to go round schools to monitor study habits of students. Also, parents should be encouraged to monitor their children reading habits at home. The study also recommends that functional libraries should be developed and equipped in secondary schools to encourage reading among senior secondary school students in Lagos State. In addition, awards should be given to students who are found to have developed meaningful reading habit.Item Knowledge of english language as a predictor of students cognitive achievement in senior secondary school mathematics(Ozean Publication, 2011-06) Adegoke, B. A.; Ibode, O. F.In this paper, the authors, using ex-post-facto procedure, attempted to show the effect of knowledge of English language on students' cognitive achievement in senior secondary school mathematics. In all 504 SS II students, comprising 252 males and 252 females were sampled, using cluster sampling technique. Using simple regression analysis, the findings showed that knowledge of English language appears to be a predictor of students cognitive achievement in mathematics even irrespective of gender. The implications of the study as well as suggestions for improving the teaching and learning of mathematics at the senior secondary school level were highlighted.Item Leadership management role as determinant of students' academic achievement in high schools in Osun State, Nigeria(Department of Educational Management, University of Ibadan, 2017-12) Ibode, O. F.; Osho, N. A.This study investigated high school principals' ability to perform managerial role as determinant of students' academic achievement in Osun State. Three research questions were developed to guide the study. The study adopted ex-post facto design of survey research type in which 124 principals of high schools in Osun State were purposively selected. Data was collected using a self-designed questionnaire. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression were utilised for data analysis at 0.05level of analysis. The study's finding revealed that the managerial roles of principals had no significant composite influence on students' academic performance [F (5,241) = 0.985], (R) = 0.142 and, R square of 0.020. That is, academic achievement of students in schools had no correlation with principals' roles. This means that 1.0% (Adj. R2=0.010) of the variance in the academic achievement in schools accounted for the independent variables, when taken together. Also, managerial role has no significant relative influences on students' academic performance. Planning (β = 0.003, t= .025, p> 0.05) has no potent contribution to the prediction, organising role has no significant influence (β = 0.086, t= .794, p> 0.05) and directing had no significant influence (β = 0.029, t= 0.293, p> 0.05). The study, therefore, recommended that school principals in the state should endeavour to discharge their managerial roles or functions in such a way that will create positive impact on students' academic achievement.
