African Social Values and the Contemporary Issues of Respect and Cooperation in Nigeria's Educational Process

The interdependence of social values and education is mutual because one promotes the other. Whoever passes through the process of education is expected to acquire social values which will differentiate him/her from those without the opportunity. Thus, better social behaviour is expected from educated individuals, although there may be exceptions. In other words, the knowledge acquired from schools should expose recipients lo live rightly and harmoniously with others around them. This philosophical piece therefore examines African social values in relation to respect and cooperation as well as its place in the contemporary African society. The need for Teacher Education practitioners especially, in Nigeria to lay more emphasis on the affective domain of learning as recommended in the paper suggests a possible turn-out of learners from schools with better altitudes and display of characters necessary for desired growth and development of the society.
Covid-19 pandemic, digital education and national development in Nigeria

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the process and practice of education in nations across the globe. The pandemic however brought to fare the need oar digitalisation and utilisation of modem methods of teaching and learning in schools. Thus, the pedagogy in the System of education is affected in certain ways. This is necessary to overcome the menace and challenges the pandemic has thrown societies into. The study employed the tools of both historical and philosophical research methods to assess the relevance of digital education in the quest to promote the course of education in order to bring about national development in Nigeria. This is expected to assist Nigeria and other countries across the globe to overcome the big challenge and disruption caused by the pandemic in the practice of education. The study concluded that the place of digital education to confront the negative effects of COVID-19 pandemic in order to overcome the problems that can impede the desired growth and developments in the Nigerian society has become imperative. The paper recommends that stakeholders should brace up to embrace the realities of the 'new normal! ’ of digital education which the pandemic had brought, while individuals’ and governments' efforts should not be undermined under the guise of any form of conservatism
Critical thinking and creativity in the Nigerian philosophy of education

Developing critical thinking and possessing exceptional human capacity far thought and creativity are part of the skills that can help to achieve the goals of education. As higher education and job requirements become competitive, complex and technical, proponents argue that students will need skills such as critical thinking and creativity to successfully navigate the modem world, excel in challenging careers, process increasingly complex information, etc. As a result, it is expedient to foster critical thinking and creativity in education. To prepare leaders to solve problems and develop societies in the 21" century, there is the need to develop them in how to use cognitive tools of critical thinking and creativity. Critical thinking involves examining possibilities carefully, fairly and constructively, while creativity has to do with exploring ideas, generating possibilities, looking for many right answers rather than just one. The paper philosophically carries out conceptual analysis of critical thinking and creativity as educational concepts. It explores what they entail, the characteristics of a critical thinker and creative person, the relationship between the two concepts, as well as their relevance to education for the transformation and development of Nigeria particularly in achieving the Nigerian philosophy of education. Recommendations were thereafter suggested. The paper concludes that critical thinking skills go hand in hand with creative skills therefore, it is when educators realise the relationship between the two that leaders’ capacity for innovation to develop the society can be enhanced
Developing metacognition in pre-primary childhood education in Nigeria and Uganda

Education is a process designed to develop skills and attitudes in learners, among these skills is metacognition. Societies have faulted educational institutions on its inability to produce graduates who can reason and decide rationally, this had prompted the search by scholars to resolve this challenge. This paper examined metacognition as a concept and how teachers can develop this skill in learners especially, those in the pre-school classes in Nigeria and Uganda. Metacognition is the ability to reflect on issues and personally take decisions that are rational and result in beneficial actions. The paper discussed various methods and theories of imparting this skill in early childhood learners which include the play-way, dramatisation and story-telling methods of teaching while the theories of learning considered include the Stimulus-Response and Cognitive theories. Models of learning like the Reggio Emilia and Friedrich Froebel's were enumerated as means by which the skill can be imparted. The paper concluded that the skill is indispensable if the process of education is to produce graduates competent in critical thinking and logical reasoning. It recommended that professionals should be employed to handle children's education, conducive environment be provided, while young learners should be encouraged to carry out independent actions with supervision from teachers.
Education and Values in Nigeria's National Development

Societies designed educational processes to propagate their values, traditions and achieve set goals as well as objectives. Several countries particularly, the developing world have found it difficult to achieve this. Achieving society's goals and objectives have been herculean task far Nigeria as a nation. The process of education is established as a veritable tool to correct the anomaly. This paper therefore, examined values that are pertinent to national development, raised questions on the failure of these values far desired growth and attempted answers to the questions. The philosophical research method was employed in the study. The paper concluded that the extinction of African traditional values coupled with economies challenges have contributed to the downturn. The paper recommended the reconsideration of African traditional values and efforts at revamping the economy. This is hoped to go a long way to effect needed growth and developments in Nigeria
Education for sustainable peace in Nigeria

Education is an important tool in achieving sustainable peace. Where there is no peace, chaos, destruction of lives and properties are inevitable, there will not be development therefore, stagnation and retrogression will be the likely outcomes. Knowledge is very essential to ensure peace and stability in any society. This can be achieved through the process of education. For a state or society to achieve sustainable peace, the quality and practice of its education becomes very essential. This paper examined the concepts of education and peace. It provides a philosophical insight into the various ways the process of education in Nigeria can be employed to achieve sustainable peace. The study reveals that curriculum, pedagogy and subject approaches are vital in inculcating social values and peace in the society. They are required if the potency and efforts of the process of education in strengthening and promoting peace will not be defeated. It concluded by stating that while proven and effective programmes and curriculum are in place in Nigeria's educational policy, educators have what it takes to demonstrate, impart and help learners to develop and reflect the culture of peace through classroom interactions. It finally suggested ways of promoting peace through education. This include creation of conducive atmosphere for learning, allocation of adequate funds for educational development, discouraging quota System, separating religion from secular education and provision of culturally relevant curriculum

The process of education is designed to achieve certain goals of the society, which can be done through some factors considered important. These factors include emotion and intelligence. Emotion is an important component of educational process, which involves perception, comprehension and management of strong feelings. Failure to manage emotion properly can result in negative consequences. Intelligence, on the other hand, is also essential in the teaching/learning process. Therefore, emotional intelligence is an important factor in the education process. It is one of the factors that are indispensable in cordial human relationships. Emotional intelligence can be described as the ability to comprehend or perceive any strong feeling intelligently The Nigerian society is beset with various forms of social vices which are attributed to deficiencies in emotional intelligence. This study examined emotional intelligence as a concept in the process of education. Education is an agency in a society responsible for offering Solutions to problems. Ethics, which generally focuses on moral judgment and social values, is very important in human relationship and essential in the intellectual and moral development of learners far their social transformation in order to develop the society. This study examined ethics and social values in relation to the ethical theories/principles of Immanuel Kant and his categorical imperatives, utilitarianism as well as existential- ism and how they can be used to influence the teacher-learner interactions to promote right moral actions and attitudes in order to achieve the purpose of education in the society. The study asserted that ethical values and education are mutually interdependent thus, better social behaviour is expected from educated persons. The knowledge acquired from our educational institutions should make learners live right and harmoniously with others in the society

Using the philosophical method, the paper critically analysed the concept of choice in the existentialist philosophy with particular reference to the practice of education as well as the shortcomings of the school of thought. The paper established that a System of education based on the existentialist concept of choice will make learners realise that their choices make them creators of their own world; they will be able to engage in prior deliberations to make meaningful decisions, it will encourage the spirit of self-reliance through personal involvement in practices, and develop ability to apply critical thinking. It was suggested that in order to achieve liberal education, critical pedagogy should be employed by teachers as well as other agents of education to ensure that learners make informed and valuable choices in life

Guidance and monitoring are essential in every human or social endeavour to attain success. Unguided and unmonitored activities are likely to fail hence, the imperative of guidance and monitoring in human activities. Groups, associations and bodies do volunteer to carry out activities of supervision or scrutinizing undertakings of individuals, societies and organisations even without profit motive, all in the spirit of ensuring standards and attaining objectives. The Philosophers of Education Association of Nigeria (P.E.A.N) is an academic body involved in the development and practice of education in Nigeria. As part of her responsibilities to the Nigerian Society in the forty years of her existence, it is pertinent to examine activities of the education sector in order to determine its relevance to the growth aspirations of the country. There are arguments as to the reasons for the alleged failure of Nigeria’s education system; some had attributed it to the attitudes of people in the society, while others claimed it was the policy guidelines. This paper therefore sets out to examine the \national Policy on Education (N.P.E.) as a document to determine its adequacy, relevance or otherwise in the practice and administration of Nigeria’s education system. The Philosophical Research Method (P.R.M.) as well as the Content Analysis (C.A.) mode was adopted to scrutinise the policy document. The paper concluded that funding and implementation of policy guidelines have been the bane of the effective and efficient practice of education. Recommendations were made thereafter.

Operationalisng Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 in Nigeria: Artificial Intelligence and Employability of Graduates

Man's deficiency at applying acquired knowledge intelligently has prompted development of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), a computer device designed to learn new concepts and tasks; it also possesses the ability to reason and draw conclusions about the world. This shows that man finds it difficult to articulate and stimulate knowledge appropriately which affected development. Products of educational institutions particularly in Nigeria have not been found employable. Man and his nature support acquisition of knowledge. However, intelligent application of this knowledge had been queried severally. Can it be claimed that human nature negates positive application of knowledge for the purpose of development? This paper expounded the concepts of human nature, Artificial Intelligence, employability, and education in relation to operationalising United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4. The paper employed the speculative, historical, analytic and prescriptive methods, and concluded that operationalising the SDG 4 has become imperative, therefore, every means must be utilised to ensure its success through the process of education. The paper therefore recommended that teachers should discard the 'banking' method of teaching and develop learners said that they are allowed to discover knowledge and endeavour to apply same intelligently with the government providing appropriate environment for education and its process to thrive.
