Item Assessment of factors contributing to flood disaster in Ibadan metropolis: implication for environmental health education(2015) Odelola, J. O.; Akinola, C. O.Climate change has brought with it some forms of extreme weather events One of such is heavy rainfall which often leads to flood In recent times, flood disaster has been a regular occurrence destroying lives and property This study was earned out to identify and assess contributing factors to flood disaster in Ibadan metropolis The study investigated the contributions of variables such as heavy rainfall, drainage system, waste disposal arrangement, the dumping of refuse inside waterways the role of environmental health officers and level of adherence to the city masterplan. Expost facto research design was adopted for the study The population composed all residents of Ibadan metropolis The sample consisted of seven hundred and fifty (750) respondents were sampled from flood affected areas in five Local Government Areas of Oyo State, Nigeria. The instrument used was self-constructed questionnaire with 0.78 reliability co-efficient. The data obtained were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and inferential statistics of regression The findings revealed that dumping of refuse inside waterways, attitude of environmental health officers, heavy rainfall drainage system and poor adherence to city master-plan contributed io flood disaster in Ibadan metropolis. Among the factors that contributed significantly are heavy rain and dumping of refuse inside waterways. It is implied from the findings that there is urgent need for environmental health education for the population in order to encourage proper disposal of waste among residents of Ibadan metropolis.Item Attitude towards pre-marital genetic screening among students of Osun State polytechnics, Nigeria(2012-04) Odelola, J. O.; Akintaro, O. A.; Adisa, O.This study investigated the attitude towards pre-marital genetic screening among students of Osun State Polytechnics. Descriptive survey design was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was self developed and structured questionnaire in four- point likert scale format. Descriptive statistics of frequency count and percentages were used to describe the demographic data, while the parametric statistics of t-test and ANOVA set at 0.05 alpha level were used to test the hypotheses. A total number of one thousand, one hundred and sixty-five (1,165) -Higher National Diploma (HND) students served as respondents for the study. Multistage sampling technique was used in three stages to select the respondents, namely: purposive sampling technique was used to select the schools; stratified sampling technique was used to select the Faculties and Departments, while proportionate sample of 25% was selected from each stratum. Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The following were the values obtained: Difference in Attitude towards Pre-marital Genetic Screening (Crit-t = 1.96, Cal.t = 1.310, df = 1163, P > .05); Difference in Attitude Due to Religion (F(2,1162) = .689, P > .05) and Difference in Attitude Due to Course of Study (F(5,1159) = .585, P > .05). Conclusions were drawn based on the findings of the study. The study recommended, among other things that religious organizations should serve as useful channels to disseminate health information since people always have respect for places of worship and religious leaders.Item Capacity building and material resources as determinants of practitioners’ effectiveness in delivering health education for poverty alleviation and sustainable development in Oyo State Knowledge and abuse of psychoactive substances among commercial drivers in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria(2018-06) Odelola, J. O.The study investigated capacity- building and material resources as determinants of practitioners' effectiveness in delivering health education for poverty> alleviation and sustainable development in Oyo state rural communities. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study sampled 244 community health practitioners from fifteen local government areas of Oyo State in South Western Nigeria. Data were collected through questionnaire. Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The finding showed a significant joint effect of variables of capacity building (collaborative learning, knowledge management and technological support) and material resources equipment, facilities and fund) on practitioners' effectiveness in delivering health education (F(6.237= 17.732; P<0.05). It was concluded that effectiveness of community health practitioners in delivering health education is a function of technical exposure, motivation and provision of necessary materials. It was recommended that community health practitioners should be equipped with knowledge and skills through regular attendance of conferences, symposia, and seminars. Also, they should be given necessary motivation and materials with which to be effective in delivering health education.Item Challenges of integrating recreational activities into the school programme of the special needs children(2012-01) Odelola, J. O.; Moses, M. O.; Lokoyi, O. L. O.Recreational activity is important and relevant to human development as well as the achievement of optimum health. It has vital role to play in helping special needs children to develop physically, socially and emotionally. Recreational activity could help the children to live a more fulfilling, satisfying and healthy life in the world in which their capability is limited. Although, the special needs children have equal right as the able-bodied persons to participate in leisure time activity, some challenges are standing in the way of special needs schools in providing this opportunity. The desire to find out these constraints informed this study. Descriptive survey research design was used in the study. The one hundred (100) participants used in the study were from five special schools in Ibadan, Oyo State, and Asaba, Delta State using purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was the Recreational Integration Challenge Questionnaire (RICQ) with four subsets and four items in each, which focused on the actual challenges which children with special needs are facing in the implementation of integrating recreational activities into the schools’ programmes. The descriptive statistics of chi-square (x2) was employed to test the hypotheses formulated at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that facilities and equipment, financial constraints, time schedules and adjustment to motor skills learning significantly posed challenges to the integration of recreational activities. The study among other things recommended that private, philanthropists and business tycoons should invest in the construction and provision offunctional facilities and equipment that will motivate the special needs children to participate in recreational activities for health.Item Constraints to bedside health education of diabetic patients at the University College Hospital, Ibadan Nigeria(Nigerian Association of Health Educators, 2017) Odelola, J. O.The study examined institutional and personal factors as constraints to bedside health education of diabetic patients among nurses at the University College Hospital, Ibadan Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. A sample of 50 respondents was selected using purposive sampling technique. Two research questions were answered and six research hypotheses were tested. Self-developed and validated questionnaire with reliability co-efficient of 0.89 was used to collect data. Data were analysed with the use of percentage and inferential statistics of chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that workload, health education training programme, health education teaching aids, ward environment, attitude of nurses to patients and communication skills were constraints to bedside health education of diabetic patients. A.Item Demystifying consumerism: towards tackling the problem of quackery in Nigeria(2009-07) Odelola, J. O.Marketplaces are flooded with goods and services from which consumers must choose. Consumers are in this way faced with challenges of choosing goods and services that will satisfy their wants and have positive impact on their health. Studies have shown that many of the goods available in marketplaces are fake, expired or contaminated. Quacks render ineffective health services. Information provided about the goods and services are deceptive and inadequate. This paper examines problems of quackery and consumerism and the importance of consumerism. It also explains rights of consumer and corresponding laws as well as consumer health protection agencies and consumer health education. The paper concludes that consumer’s rights could be protected through legal means. The paper recommends the integration of consumerism into school curricula and massive public enlightenment on the activities of quacks in Nigeria.Item Developing youths through health education for nation building(Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, 2011) Odelola, J. Any nation aspiring for development must pay attention to the development of her youths. The paper discussed concept and importance of health education as well as the role of health education in the development of health, intellect, value for life, good virtue and industry among Nigerian youths. It is recommended that, health education should form part of developmental programme for Nigerian youths.Item Effects of problem solving and interpersonal skills training on violent behaviour among secondary school students in Delta State, Nigeria(2016-02) Odelola, J. O.; Lokoyi, O. O.Secondary school students in Delta State are increasingly engaging in violence which negatively affects their academic performance and health. Introduction of life skill into secondary curriculum is an effort at changing negative behaviour of students. However, previous studies have shown non-implementation of life skill training included in the school curriculum; hence the continued occurrence of violence among secondary schools students. This study therefore determined the effects of Life skill (problem solving and interpersonal skills) training on violent behaviour among secondary school students in Della State. A pre-test-post-lest control group quasi-experimental research design was adopted in this study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select one local government area from each of the three senatorial districts. Purposive sampling technique was used to select one co-educational school each from the selected three local government areas. Three secondary schools were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and control group. A sample of two hundred and sixteen students was used in the study. Four research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. Data collected were analysed using ANCOVA. bindings revealed that, there was a significant mam effect of treatment on violent behaviour among secondary school students in Della state F(2,204-34.67)- There were no significant main effects of gender and religion on violent behaviour. O.Adolescents in Delta State engage in such health risk behaviour as: smoking, alcohol use, drug abuse, multiple sexual partners and illegal abortion. Health risk taking threatens attainment of individual health and well-being, as well as sustainable national development. There is an urgent need to stem the tide of health risk taking among the youths who are leaders of tomorrow. This study investigated effects of school based life skills training on health risk behaviour among in-school adolescents in Delta State. A pretest-post-test control group quasi experimental research design was adopted in this study. Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted. Simple random sampling technique was used to select one local government area from each of the three senatorial districts. Purposive sampling technique was used to select one coeducational school each from the selected three local government areas. Three secondary schools were-randomly assigned to two experimental groups and control group. A sample of two hundred and sixteen students was used in the study. Four research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Data collected were analysed using ANCOVA. Findings showed that, there was a significant main effect of treatment (school based life skills training) on health risk behaviours among in-school adolescents (F{2,204} = 19.063 P<0.05). Based on the finding, it was recommended that, school teachers should be re-trained in the use of life-skills and should be encouraged to employ the approach in classroom teaching.Item Enhancing attitude towards e-waste management through environmental health education among electronic technicians in Ibadan, Oyo State Nigeria(University of Alexandria, Egypt, 2017-02) Odelola, J. O.; Omeboh, N. E.Health hazard of e-waste is emerging as alarming public health problem in Nigeria. E- wastes are generated in an increased manner because electrical and electronic equipment purchased originally as second hand reached its end-of-life rapidly. Disposal of e-waste is done using unsanitary methods due to poor attitude of electronic technicians to e-waste management. This study sought to enhance attitude towards e-waste management through environmental health education among electronic technicians in Oyo State, Nigeria. A pretest-post test control group quasi-experimental research design was adopted for this study. Purposive and systematic sampling techniques were used to select one hundred participants. Three research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. Data collected were analysed using Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA). Findings revealed that, there was a significant main effect of treatment on attitude towards e-waste management among electronic technicians in Ibadan Oyo State, Nigeria. [F(1.84)=4.900, p<0.05, η2=0.055). Based on the finding, it was recommended that environmental health education should be organised for electronic technicians.Item Family factors as predictors of violent behaviour among in-school adolescents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria(Nigerian School Health Association (NSHA), 2015) Odelola, J. O.The study examined family factors as predictors of violent behaviour of in school adolescents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. A sample of 277 respondents was selected using stratified random sampling. Three research hypotheses were tested. Self-developed and validated questionnaire with reliability co-efficient of 0.71 was used to collect data. Data were analysed with the use of inferential statistics of regression at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that joint effect of family factors (career family, family financial difficulty and violent family) on inschool adolescents’ violent behaviour was significant (F(3,273)=119.181 ; R=0.753; R2=0.567; R. Adj = 0.562; P<.05). Thus, it was concluded that violent behaviour is a major cause of injuries and death among adolescents. Among others, it was recommended that poverty alleviation programme, responsible parenthood as well as family life education should be provided by government.Item Healthful school environment as determinant of junior secondary school students’ hygiene behaviour in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria(International Centre for Professional Advancement, UK, 2015-01) Odelola, J. O.The study investigated healthful school environment as determinant of Junior Secondary School students' hygiene behaviour. The descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. A sample of 487 respondents were selected using simple random sampling technique. The instrument used was self developed questionnaire with reliability co-efficient of 0.61. The data was analysed with the use of percentage and inferential statistics of multiple regression at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that, joint effect of variables of healthful school environment of (safe drinking water, hand and body washing equipment and facilities, toilet facilities, sanitary equipment and environmental aesthetic) on students ‘ hygiene behaviour was significant; F(5,481)=65.915;R= 638; R2 =.407. Adj. R2 = .400; P<05. The paper concluded that, positive hygiene behaviour was a step towards achieving good health and could be fostered in students by the provision of healthful school environment. It was recommended that, government at all levels should make human and material resources available in schools to facilitate the implementation of healthful school environmental programme.Item Impact of global economic recession on health and education of Nigerian school-age children: proffering mitigation strategies for sustainable education development(2015) Odelola, J. O.Economic recession has led to reduced financial income of Nigerians, consequent upon which many families are financially poor. The impact is overwhelming on the children of the families as their education and healthcare needs suffer neglect. There is the need to mitigate the effects of the recession in order to empower the children adequately to confront the challenges of sustainable development of the country. The paper examined global economic recession, elementary school children as well as the impact of the recession on health care and education of the children. Mitigation strategies are proffered. Prudent management of government resources as well as quality services delivery in government health and educational institutions were suggested as measures to ensure the effectiveness of the mitigation strategies proffered.Item Impact of health education on awareness of sedentary lifestyle as predisposing factor to cardiovascular diseases among secondary school principals in zone 4, Nigeria(2018) Akinwusi, A. T.; Odelola, J. O.Skeletal muscles contract to produce body movement Essentially, skeletal muscle activities affect the health of other organs such as heart, adipose tissue, brain. Engaging in physical exercise enhances proper functioning of body organs, thus promoting healthy living. Nigerian secondary school principals are not known to engage in physical exercise, probably due to poor awareness of its importance to their health. Meanwhile, a life of inactivity otherwise called sedentary lifestyle is a risk factor to cardiovascular disease. In recent times, cardiovascular disease has led to a significant increase in deaths among administrators in Nigeria. Therefore, this study examined impact of Health Education on awareness of sedentary life style as predisposing factor to cardiovascular diseases among secondary school principals in zone 4, Oyo State, Nigeria. The study adopted a single group pre-test-post-test quasi experimental research design. Participants were given Health education on sedentary lifestyle and related diseases as its resultant effect. A split plot analysis of variance (SPANOVA) was employed to find the difference in pre-test-post-test scores of the participants. The result showed that, health education given was effective. The participants’ awareness level increased, thus willing to refrain from sedentary lifestyle and adopt a sporting lifestyle. It was recommended that, the Ministry of Education should mandate school managements to create time during the school hours for principals and members of staff to engage in physical exercises. Also, health education in which disease prevention will feature prominently should form part of the agenda during meetings of school principals.Item Influence of environmental factors on incidence of tuberculosis among patients of directly observed treatment short-course centers in Ibadan metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria(Nigerian School Health Association (NSHA), 2013) Odelola, J. O.; Lateef, K. O.Tuberculosis is one of the major diseases causing prolong ill health conditions especially in the developing countries of which Nigeria is one. It is a disease that is associated with poor environment. In other words, filthy environment can pave way for the disease. The study examined environmental factors influencing incidence of tuberculosis among patients in Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course Centres in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was employed. Proportionate and simple random sampling techniques were used to select 206 respondents as sample for the study. Three research hypotheses were tested. Self - developed and validated sets of questionnaire were used to collect data. The descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages were used to analyse the demographic data, while chi - square (X2) and t - test were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The finding showed that incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis was influenced by poor sanitary environment among patients of DOTS Centres in Ibadan Metropolis. It was also shown that there was no significant gender difference in factors that influenced among the patients. It was suggested that the State's Ministry of Health, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders should intensify effort on public health education on environmental sanitation through symposia, seminars and conferences. State and Local Government Areas should strengthen the enforcement of environmental law and edit in Oyo State.Item Knowledge and abuse of psychoactive substances among commercial drivers in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria(Nigerian School Health Association (NSHA), 2018-06) Amao, O. Z. K.; Odelola, J. O.This study examined knowledge and abuse of psychoactive substances among commercial drivers in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was used for this study. One hundred commercial drivers were sampled from commercial motor parks in Ibadan. The instrument used for the study was a self-developed questionnaire which was appropriately validated by experts and cronbach alpha was used to establish the reliability. Two research questions were raised to guide the study. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation. Results showed that commercial drivers in Ibadan do not have knowledge of psychoactive substance and they indulge in abuse of psychoactive substances. It was therefore recommended that drug education with greater emphasis on negative effects of psychoactive substances should be organized regularly for commercial drivers in Ibadan metropolis.Item Management practices as correlates of information and communication technology use for health education delivery among practitioners in Oyo State Nigeria(The Institut Bilingue Libre Du Togo, 2017-12) Odelola, J. O.Health education is a proven cost effective disease prevention strategy. Effective health education delivery to heavy disease- burden-carrying- community people depends largely on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This study therefore examined management practices as correlates of information and communication technology use for health education delivery among practitioners in Oyo State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population was all community health practitioners in Oyo State. The instrument used for data collection was a self-constructed questionnaire with 0.87 reliability coefficient The collected data were analysed using Pearson's Product- Moment Correlation, Analysis of Variance and Regression statistics. Findings show that variables of management practices correlated significantly with effective health education delivery. It was concluded that good management practices can enhance use of Information and Communication technology in the delivery of health education. Therefore, it is recommended that infrastructure maintenance, personnel training, usage of monitoring and supporting policy that can facilitate the use of ICT by community health practitioners to deliver health education effectively should be put in place.Item National rebirth as a pre-requisite for achieving goals of health sector reform: the role of health education(2007) Odelola, J. O.Government put in place reform agenda in health sector apparently to facilitate the achievement for all Nigerians a level of health that will permit them to lead a socially and economically productive live as enunciated in the National Policy on Health. However, the goal of the reform became difficult to achieve due to poor attitude of the people to National issues. There arose the need for national rebirth. The paper examined concepts of national rebirth, need for national rebirth efforts of government at National rebirth as well as health education. The paper noted that national rebirth programme embarked upon is laudable but lacks a force that could really do the magic of attitudinal change in the people. It therefore recommended the integration of health education into the National rebirth programme.
