O.; Adeyemi, B. M.This paper discussed the adequacy of academic journals in Nigerian University libraries during economic gloom using the Kenneth Dike library (KDL) experience. It addresses the problem by looking specifically at the library allocations for books and journals from 1981/82 to 1989/90 session as well as the number of journal titles acquired annually vis-a-vis the number of registered readers in the library duirng the period. It was discovered that the library could no longer effectively support academic activities. As the number of registered readers increased, the number of journals acquired decreased. The library could hardly afford to maintain subsciption in existing journals not to mention adding new titles to the collection. It is therefore advocated that prioprity journals should be given first attention when allocating funds. University library administratos should evovle co- operative acquisitons. Avenues of getting aid from international organisations should be explored while the opportunities presented by internet should be utilized to enhance document delivery.Item Approaches to retrospective conversion of catalogue records of libraries(2001) Ola, C. O.Developing countries face enormous social, political and economic problems in addition to being consumer economies that rely almost absolutely on importation. The knowledge production enterprise (in general) and the library and information science (LIS) profession (in particular) suffer due to inadequate media to communicate scholarly works in Nigeria. This paper identifies short lifespan, irregular issues of locally produced journals, and inability to sustain subscription to foreign ones as major shortcomings of LIS journal marketing in Nigeria. It posits that journal sustainability is mainly based on the returns made from journal marketing and distribution. However, the ability of institutions to subscribe to reputable journals is dependent on how well funded they are and every academic relies on the meager monthly allowance s/he earns which is hardly enough to personally subscribe to one good local journal. Moreover, the content and physical qualities of the journals also affect the extent of their marketing and distribution. The cumulative effect of these limitations is the pauperization of the knowledge industry through the unavailability of quality media for communicating research results and limited exposure to foreign research findings. The paper suggests, among other things, that Nigerian Library Association (NLA) and other stakeholders in the librarianship profession should create a regulatory body that would be responsible for setting standards, vetting the quality of, and endorsing journals produced, marketed and distributed in NigeriaItem Cloud Computing adoption and implementation in University libraries in Africa: an overview(2015) Ojo, R. A .; Ola, C. O.This paper makes an exploit into how cloud computing can change the computational resource utilization and value in the African University Libraries (A ULs) terrain. It takes a look at the economics of providing computational resources through cloud computing web services providers like Amazon, using the concepts of utility services providers like, in the case of electricity consumption, pre-paid meter which is operated on ‘pay per use' basis. This approach is cost effective in terms of implementation in that since the server resides in the cloud, it follows that the required space for storing data will be used at a particular point in time, thereby the unused server space can be allocated to other customers using the same cloud service on request instead of allowing it to waste away. Personnel cost, with regards to technical staff will be reduced to the barest minimum since the issue of baby-sitting server must have been eliminated at the point of requesting for cloud services. Given limited available financial support at the disposal of AULs, server space economy, disaster recovery>, prudent infrastructural utilization, seamless resource sharing, a robust, sustainable and efficient backup plans, among others, will be the resultant benefits of cloud computing adoption and implementation to A ULs for efficient, timely and effective sendee delivery. All these are exhaustively discussed in this paper. A model of adoption and implementation as well as a review of what same will translate to within the A UL systems are also presented. This article is an overview of the adoption and implementation of cloud computing services in AULs with an associated model which can be used as a benchmark for implementation strategies within the AUL systems. An exhaustive practical implementation plan is strongly recommended for future research which will incorporate result analysis as well as exhaustive discussion of findingsItem Creating electronic access to newspaper information in Nigeria: the information aid network (IFAnet) experience(Academic Journals, 2006) Ola, C. O.; Ojo, R. A.This paper highlights the value of newspaper information and the methods adopted in organizing, preserving and disseminating it. The paper dwells on the traditional ways of managing newspaper resources and the need to device a new medium of accessing the information contents of the resource. It enumerates the steps taken in conserving newspaper information and building access descriptors for retrieval from the massive information contained in numerous newspapers churned out daily, weekly or periodically. An NGO, (IFAnet), concerned with managing information and using newspapers as one of its major resources has been used as the case studyItem Creating electronic access to newspaper information in Nigeria: the Information Aid network (IFAnet) experience(Academic Journals, 2006-10) Ola, C. O.; Otulugbu, D.Libraries are information repositories. It is generally assumed that libraries house information with emphasis on books. Media materials (MM) are information resources that are not given much cognizance when users are seeking information whereas they are veritable primary information bearers of great research significance to academics; and soft contents for recreational purposes. This paper gives a description of these special class of knowledge resources highlighting bibliographic elements of organizing them in the library. It then focuses on how to abstract and index newspaper resources for easy accessibility and retrieval with modern techniques.Item Essentials of project proposal writing in librarianship(International Center for Professional Advancement, 2015-06) Ola, C. O.This paper focuses on the essentials of project proposal writing in librarianship. Librarianship is basically service-oriented and mostly non-for-profit. Their needs are enormous as they thrive to provide Services to their teeming users with the limited resources available to them. In doing this, they approach funding organizations, foundations and government agencies for support. As there are many contending libraries and organizations competing for scarce grants, the skills in writing project proposals become very important when sourcing for support to execute library projects. The paper discusses projects and the development of library and Information Services; the general guidelines for proposal writing: the structure and contents of project proposals; project details and descriptions; the budget contents and; the organizational Information. In all these, attention is drawn to the salient ingredients that make project proposals attractive to potential funding organizationsItem Fee charging in Nigerian academic libraries: what justification(1993) Ojedokun, A. A; Ola, C. O.This paper examines the issue of charging as it affects Nigerian academic libraries. The issue is looked at from the economic, socio-cultural and political viewpoints. Because of its complexity from the three perspectives mentioned aboved, it was concluded that while generalized library services could be made free, charging can be introduced for personalised library services and information services. However, a clear distinction must be made between these three categories of services.Item Funding local government and public sector libraries in austere times(Codat Publications, Ibadan, 2001-05) Ola, C. O.This article examines the relevance of training and skills development to modern librarianship in the first generation universities in Nigeria. The developments noticed in this sector in the universities within the past decade made it imperative to have new workers with new skills to adopt to the many changes that have taken place that are likely to affect the working environments and professional functions of the librarians. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. 80 librarians made up of (twenty eight) 28 professional librarians and 52 Para-professional librarians participated in the study. Data were collected using a questionnaire tagged Workers Skills Development Questionnaire (WSDQ) and this was complemented with structured interview. Findings revealed that librarians should be trained to cope with global change in librarianship. Specific areas where skills need to be enhanced were identified and suggestions for sources of fund were describedItem Improving Services in a hybrid academic library System(2021) Oyelude, A. A.; Ola, C. O.; Adeniran, E. A.The mixture of traditional or manual ways of carrying out library operations with new, modern, automated systems often brings about several problems. The problems are ones that can be tackled within the framework of having appropriate systems dynamics routines applied and also making use of personnel skilled in strategic management of hybrid library systems. The paper describes a hybrid academic library system and draws up a model of this system suggesting strategies and scenarios for achieving optimum performance of the system in a technology changing world. A system dynamics model for the management of the system is developed around the issues of personnel management, collection management, capacity building, and provision of access to research materials, Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, forming of Consortia, and Security in the system. Recommendations are made as to which strategy/ scenario or combinations of scenarios will provide lasting solutions to the problems recurring or likely to reoccur in a hybrid academic library system.
