The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak on the legal landscape in Nigeria is diverse and multifaceted. Its effect has gone way beyond every conceivable outcome and has affected not only the health of the individuals in any given community and the health sector, but movement, travel, social interactions. businesses, and the day-lo-day lives of the Nigerian people. Adopting the sociological jurisprudence school of legal theory which recognizes the relationship betwixt and among law. society. technology. and accepted social culture, this paper charts the effect of Covid-19 on identified Segments of the legal landscape and the society viz: health. labor. tourism, criminal law. And procedure. family law. as presented by legal scholars in various legal subfields. A holistic approach lo resolving the legal issues brought about by covid-19 is recommended as the best foot forward such as; respecting the basic human rights of citizens would ensure that the vulnerable can access medical care: health data accumulated based on die pandemic is managed wise/y (and no! subject lo3abtise): defaulters of Covid-19 regulations are handled in a manner that reflects respect for die rule of law and due process: medical waste management is handled in such a way that it does not affect the community and result in die spread of disease, inter alia.

Rural and grassroots development is the concern of every responsible and responsive government in any political System. This is because political participation in the development process has continued to elude the people at the grassroots. Development remains insignificant if it does not positively affect the lives of those in the periphery of decision making arrangement. The Nigerian state therefore created local governments as the third tier of government with the objective of ensuring effective, measurable and efficient Service delivery to the people. There is no gainsaying that local government administration in Nigeria is faced with numerous challenges. This paper will dwell majorly on these challenges and illuminate the factors responsible for them. To this end, this paper will rely on descriptive approach and well structured suggestions. It will identify the multifarious nature of problems and challenges facing local government administration, as well as proffer adequate and practical Solutions to them in order to evolve viable and development oriented third tier of government

Privatization of prisons: solution to prison congestion in Nigeria?

The aim of establishing the prison Institution in all parts of the world including Nigeria is to produce a rehabilitation and correctional facility for people who have violated the rules and regulations of their society. The extent to which this is true in practice has been a subject of discussion. An observation of the population that goes in and out of the prisons in Nigeria shows that there are problems in the System, hence, over time, the prison System has not been able to live up to its expected role in Nigeria. An enquiry into the state of prisons in Nigeria will reveal a System afflicted with over-population and a litany of human right abuses and contradictions, including incessant occurrences of jail breaks. Undoubtedly, the prisons are run at more than 150% capacity as no less than 60% of the inmates await trial. The problem of over-crowding and unhygienic conditions of Nigerian prisons has remained a source of worry and has continued to attract rapidly increasing attention among scholars and policy makers. Aware of the poor condition of Nigerian prisons, government has undertaken a number of reforms in the last decade which have no less failed to adequately address the poor state of prisons in Nigeria On the other hand, many scholars have proffered Solutions to the horrifying state of Nigerian prisons, including privatization as an alternative mechanism to address the contradiction that characterizes the prison System. This paper examines the history, objectives and modes of privatization of prisons, as well as the viability of privatizing Nigerian prisons
Protection of the rights of women under the Islamic legal system

Islam recognizes women as having legal rights similar to those of men although their rights like their duties are not in all cases identical with those of men. The main reason for this is that under Shari’ah, men and women play different roles in life as a result of their biological make up or attributes. As a result of this, the different roles which men and women play in the family and society inform the rights as well as the duties assigned to each under Shari’ah. It is therefore not surprising that under Shari’ah, the different duties as assigned, and the different legally binding rights as recognized and protected, are seen as a part of the balanced System, taking into account the individual, the family and society at large. This paper argues that with the coming of Islam and Islamic Law, women started enjoying a new lease of life and that Islamic Law guarantees and protects the rights of women as against the erroneous conception of the Western countries
