Item Childhood hearing loss - a Nigerian experience and a call to action(2013) Adedayo, O. O.; Olawale, O.; Osisanya, A.The burden of childhood hearing loss is huge, its effect on affected children devastating and the economic toll is heavy. Unfortunately much attention is not given to programs that promote early detection, management and rehabilitation of such children in developing countries. A cross-sectional study of the prevalence and patterns of hearing loss was undertaken among 127 children aged 5-15 years who presented for hearing assessment in two ear clinics in south-western Nigeria. Results revealed that majority (72.5%) of the children were confirmed as having hearing loss and 90.2% of those with hearing loss had disabling hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss was rampant but sensorineural hearing loss was the most prevalent. Although the flat audiogram and the flat tympanogram (Type B) predominated, other patterns of tympanograms and audiograms were also found. In conclusions, in developing countries there should be stronger advocacy by health workers for programs that will empower them and others who work with children to identify and refer children with hearing loss promptly. Universal screening of newborns and children should be made mandatory and programs aimed at preventing conditions and infections that can lead to childhood hearing loss should also be prioritized and strengthened as a matter of urgency.Item Corrosion behavior of nickel plated low carbon steel in tomato fluid(2009-06) Oluwole, O. O.; Olawale, O."This research work investigated the corrosion resistance of nickel plated low carbon steel in tomato fluid. It simulated the effect of continuous use of the material in a tomato environment where corrosion products are left in place. Low carbon steel samples were nickel electroplated at 4V for 20, 25, 30 and 35 mins using Watts solution.The plated samples were then subjected to tomato fluid environment for for 30 days. The electrode potentials mV (SCE) were measured every day. Weight loss was determined at intervals of 5 days for the duration of the exposure period. The result showed corrosion attack on the nickel- plated steel, the severity decreasing with the increasing weight of nickel coating on substrate. The result showed that thinly plated low carbon steel generally did not have any advantage over unplated steel. The pH of the tomato solution which initially was acidic was observed to progress to neutrality after 4 days and then became alkaline at the end of the thirty days test (because of corrosion product contamination of the tomato)contributing to the reduced corrosion rates in the plated samples after 10 days. Un-plated steel was found to be unsuitable for the fabrication of tomato processing machinery without some form of surface treatment - thick nickel plating is suitable as a protective coating in this environment. A.; Olawale, O.Current hike in the price of crude oil in the world market has produced ripples in the economy of nations. Research has therefore been in the area of renewable energy to break the monopoly of fossil fuel. One of such renewable fuels is ethanol. Ethanol has been produced from various feedstock. The objective of this project therefore is to produce ethanol using wheat as the feedstock. Fermentation was carried out to convert glucose (C6H12O6) to ethanol (C2H5OH) and carbon dioxide gas (CO2). 12 liters of fermented mash was heated in the boiler and the first condensate which was 60% water was collected in the receiver between 77°C and 82°C. After discarding the residue in the boiler, the first run distillation was reheated to 95.5° C, when 70% ethanol plus by- products was obtained. This process was repeated a third time. The distillate collected was (E85) i. e. 85% ethanol which was about 170 proof . This ethanol was very flammable.
