O.; Omoike, A. D.Education is an asset that an individual must possess and acquire because it is an instrument par excellence for national development. The use of Information and Communication Technology has advanced the education sector in Nigeria mostly in tertiary institutions as a result of information provision. This study therefore investigates ICTs use and library information resources in enhancing a sustainable educational development in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Survey research method was adopted for the study; undergraduate students of University of Ibadan were selected for this study. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, analysis of variance (ANOVA), regression and correlation statistical tool to test for the relative contribution and the significant relationship between ICTs use, library information resources to the prediction of sustainable educational development tested at 5% level of significance. The results revealed that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has contributed to the development of education in the study area with Computer (Laptop) 341(97.7%) which ranked highest. The findings also revealed that the use of library information resources by the undergraduates was very highly utilized with textbook 219 (62.8%) which ranked highest. The findings reveal that reading for examination 349(100.0%) was the major purpose of using information resources by the undergraduate. It also revealed limited number of computers 314(90.0%) as one of the major constraints of information resources utilisation in the university. The study revealed that there was a significant combined effect of the independent variables on the dependent variable, (F (2,346) = 7.724, P<0.05). It also revealed that information resources use (Beta = .203, t=3.860, p<0.05) and ICT use (Beta =.149, t=1.515, p>0.05) are potent predictor factors of educational development. It further revealed that information resources use (r =.201**, p<0.05) and ICT use (r =-. 147**, p<0.05) positively correlated to the prediction of educational development of students. The study recommended that government should make computer and internet facilities available at all levels of our educational system as this is expected to improve the academic performance of students in our higher institutions.Item Influence of digital literacy skills on job performance of library personnels in selected academic libraries in Southwestern, Nigeria(Scholarship Publishers, Ibadan, 2020) Tomomowo-Ayodele, S. O.; Omoike, A. D.The study investigated influence of digital literacy skills on job performance of library personnel in selected academic libraries in Southwestern, Nigeria. Survey research method of expost-facto type was adopted for the study. The study population consisted of one hundred and four (104) library personnel’s in the two selected academic libraries (University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University). The population of the study consisted of para- professionals, professional librarians and library officers. Data were collected using questionnaire and were analysed using simple percentages, mean and Pearson’s Products Moment Correlation methods. The results revealed that library personnel in the two selected academic libraries possessed digital literacy skills such that they work easily with the computer without supervision (85.6%), use the computer every day at work (84.6%) and are skilled in using the computer (82.7%) among others. However, the digital literacy skills possessed by the librarians do not translate to job performance. Findings revealed a negative digital literacy skills on job performance of library personnel in the two universities (Df= 102, N= 104, r = -.060, P > 0.05). The study recommended that the University management should support the library and ensure the improvement of the library so as to continually meeting the needs of the library users, by procuring good computers to facilitate a digital library in order to facilitate resource sharing in the library to enhance teaching, learning and research.Item Information literacy in Nigerian higher institutions – any role for librarians?(Ozean Publication, 2011) Ogunsola, L. E.; Omoike, A. D.There is a great need to extend library profession base on the fast growing needs of employment in the country as at today. To reduce the unemployed rate that has reached an alarming stage which is due to economic recession and constant decline in industry which would have lead to the drive of the economy of the nation at large. The present economic realities and the challenges in labour market in Nigeria as well as the increase in unemployment of our graduates also justify the need to equip undergraduates with the basic entrepreneurial skills and accurate knowledge that would enable them to be self-employed after graduation. Moreover, users of library no longer see the need to visit the library because library services are not attractive and packaged in ways that will make them visit the library. There is therefore, the need to make library services attractive; this will require that teachers or lecturers need to infuse entrepreneurial courses in their curriculums irrespective of the courses that they teaches at institutions of higher learning. The acquisition of entrepreneurial texts books both hard copies and soft copies should be available for the use of both students and academic staff. Hence library services need to engage in entrepreneurship education in academic school curriculum will greatly enhance entrepreneurial knowledge and skills which will prepare graduate students for the challenge of the labour market and make them to be self employed in the long run.Item Use of electronic resources by distance students in Nigeria: the case of the national open university, Lagos and Ibadan study centers(University Libraries of the University of Nebraska--Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, 2013) Omoike, A. D.This study assessed factors affecting use of electronic information resources by distance learning students using the National Open University, Lagos and lbadan Study centers as a case study. Survey method was used for the study. The sampling method adopted for the purpose of this study was the simple random sampling techniques. The sampled respondents were drawn from the total population of 12,500 students at the Lagos and lbadan study centers. However 2% of the population from each study centers was used as the sample size. A structured questionnaire was developed and administered to elicit information from the respondents. A total of 250 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved, which is strictly administered to the students. Data collected were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics. The study revealed the various factors militating against the use of electronic information resources by the distance learning students. The result showed that the extent of use of electronic information resources was very low, coupled with the low level of awareness among the students. The result also showed that majority of the electronic information resources were not also in the centers. Based on these findings, the study outlines different measures that should be put in place by government to address the unavailability of most of the electronic information resources in the two different study centers.Item Use of ICT for securing libraries and information resources against vandalism in university libraries in the era of global insecurity(Tim-Sal & Bim Publishing Ltd., 2020) Omoike, A. D.; Ikegune., D. O.Vandalism of library and information resources is an international problem as well as a historical one that affects all type of libraries. Therefore, the use of ICT for securing libraries and information resources is inevitable. ICT is the only means of securing library resources in the era of global insecurity. Security of libraries and information resources becomes a concern for the modem well equipped libraries. The application of ICT in the library will help in providing quality services by the librarians through the Internet to users as information will be processed and communicated to users to meet their information needs without delay. The methods for securing libraries and information resources against vandalism in the era of global insecurity are through digitization of information resources, electromagnetic and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), video surveillance and closed- circuit television (CCTV) systems in the library as means to deter crime and ensure safety of information resources in the library. Meanwhile, Lack of fund, poor policies and procedures, natural disasters such as earthquake, flood, fire, storm among others serve are causes of vandalism of library materials. It was therefore, recommended that government should assist the University in providing sufficient funds to install modem security systems to prevent vandalism in the library.Item The use of modern technology in controlling criminal activities in academic libraries: the case of Kenneth Dike Library and Obafemi Awolowo University Library(Credence Press Ltd, Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria, 2022) Omoike, A. D.The study investigated the use of modem technology in controlling criminal activities in academic libraries. The study was driven by the desire to determine what precipitated crimes in the academic libraries, the types and nature of criminal activities perpetrated in the library by the patrons, to identify current modem technology used in reducing and addressing criminal activities in the libraries, to identify library materials more vulnerable to crimes and the challenges faced by the academic libraries in curbing crimes. A descriptive survey was utilised and questionnaires methods were the instrument for data collection. The questionnaires were administered to both Academic and Paraprofessional librarians of the University of Ibadan Kenneth Dike Library and Obafemi Awolowo University Library. A simple random technique was adopted. A total of Sixty (60) questionnaires were randomly distributed with each library given thirty (30). Data was presented and analyzed according to the research questions of the study using simple percentage and frequencies. Due to the prevalence of criminal activities in our academic libraries in the recent times, the study unraveled varying consequential modem technology that can be adopted in curbing criminal activities in our institutions. The study finally revealed that despite the efficacy of modern technology in preventing criminal activities in academic libraries, poor funding of the academic libraries as well as insensitivity of the library management towards the issue of crimes were the major challenges in curbing crimes. This might be due to the fact that modem technology in crime prevention is capital intensive and no special fund is provided for that in the budget of the library. Based on these, recommendations were made that library management should give proper attention to security issues; that there should be special funds for security issues in the library and special awareness , enlightenment and proper education should be provided for the users during orientation programme.
