O.; Elemide, B. O.The study is a correlational research type. The sample for the study comprised 200 respondents from 5 public schools in Ibadan North West Local Government Area of Oyo State. Three instruments namely: Parental Role Scale (a =0.71), Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Scale (a = 0.87) and Biology Achievement Test (KR20 = 0.88) were used to collect data from the respondents and data collected were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results indicated that a statistically significant linear relationship exists between the predictor variables (parental roles and students learning style) and the criterion variable (students’ academic achievement in biology). Parental roles accounted for 4.9% of the variance in students’ achievement in biology while learning styles account for 4% of the total variance observed in students’ achievement in biology. Based on the findings, it is recommended that parents should be deeply committed to activities that connect with the schooling process of their children to foster academic achievement.Item Assessment of good practices in blended learning as an institutional approach for enhancing students’ learning experiences in higher institution(Educational Assessment & Research Network in Africa (EARNiA), 2015) Babatunde, E. O.Methods used for teaching and learning have been found to directly affect and substantially enhance students' learning experiences but the extent to how good practices in blended learning has enhanced student learning experiences in higher institutions has not been sufficiently examined. This study assesses good practices in blended learning as an institutional approach for enhancing students learning experiences in higher institution. Mixed method was adopted for the study (qualitative and quantitative approach) qualitative approach made use of structural interview conducted on twenty coordinators and lecturers while the structured questionnaire titled “Good Practices in Blended Learning Questionnaire ” constructed by the researcher was pilot tested that yielded Cronbach Alpha reliability of r=. 79 was used for data collection. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 250 University of Ibadan Distance Learning students. Data collected from interview was analyzed using thematic approach while quantitative data was analyzed using independent t-test. The result shows a significant mean difference between face to face (M-9.87, S.D. =1.96) and on-line interaction (M = 5.40, S.D-1.91) in cooperation among student (t=2.334, p<0:05). Also, a significant mean difference exist between on-line (M= 7.95, S.D=1.96) and face to face interaction (M=13.30, S.D. =1.66) in course satisfaction among the students (t= 17.87, p<.05). Individual differences does not significantly influence student's learning in both on-line (M=8.50, S.D. = 67) and traditional face to face (M=8.31, S.D. =1.22) interaction (t = 1.87, p<.05). Thematic analysis revealed that range of learning resources; lectures, power point presentation among others were provided to support online quizzes, and class exercise. Hence, blended learning environment is judiciously implemented and hold promise for students learning achievement.Item Assessment of health implications of violence among secondary school students in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo state, Nigeria(Nigerian School Health Association (NSHA), 2015) Babatunde, E. It was recommended that, an M&E work plan .be developed and that it should articulate the roles and responsibilities of ail in a participatory-manner.Item Creative physical and health education as a tool for character training among secondary school students in Nigeria(West African Journal of Education 34, pp. 140-149, 2014) Babatunde, E. O.A strong belief exists that Physical and Health Education (PHE) have the power to promote the development of behaviors, ethical decision-making skills, and a total curriculum for moral character development as well as providing a social environment to acquire personal and social values and behaviors contributing to good character and good citizenship. There is dearth of empirical research supporting that participation in PHE leads to character training. However, Creative PHE has immense power to shape consciousness, values, and beliefs of students that could be passed on to selected aspects of the dominant culture. This paper therefore discusses the formal and informal processes of character training among Secondary School Students in Nigeria. Character training is seen in two different ways which are moral and social values which include loyalty, sacrifice, good citizenship, dedication, healthful living and cleanliness, while moral values include honesty, fairness, fair play, justice, and responsibility. Social values, which are highly esteemed in our society, are about the real world and how society views the importance of social character. Social values are positive assets but must be tempered by moral values. Character training through PHE should be systematic and involve formal and informal processes. Creative PHE provided powerful contexts for the teaching and learning of good moral habits and for this to succeed, students need both thinking and reasoning programmes, role models, a supportive environment, and the strong moral/philosophical commitment of community members, parents, teachers, students and the media.Item Economic status and leisure time as indices of recreational sports participation among selected members of Ibadan recreation club, Ibadan, Nigeria(Nigeria Association of Sports Science and Medicine., 2016-08) Balogun, I. I.; Babatunde, E. O.The recent emphasis on well-being of corporate employees and every individual may not be unconnected with the problems of global prevalence of physical inactivity, causing millions of death worldwide and Nigeria is not an exception. Consequently, recreation has been recognized as the most identified remedy to the problems of physical inactivity and other health related problems brought about by daily exigencies among the general public, especially corporate employees. Therefore, this study was embarked upon to investigate economic status and leisure time as indices of recreational sports participation among selected members of Ibadan Recreation Club, Ibadan, Nigeria. Two hundred (200) (58%) regular participants were purposively selected from the total of three hundred and fifty (350) registered members. Self- developed, structured and validated questionnaire with reliability coefficient of 0.87 was used to generate data. The questionnaire was analyzed using inferential statistics of chi-square (2) of contingency table to test the hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. The findings revealed that the two hypotheses tested were significant (2=247.4; p<0.05 and 2=30G.2;p<0.05). This implies that economic status and leisure-time highly influenced positively the participation in recreational sports among selected members of Ibadan Recreation Club, Ibadan, Nigeria. The study concluded with some recommendations in anticipation that if implemented, may help to encourage and promote affordable recreation opportunities for mass participation in recreational sports activities for healthy living.Item Effect of climate change on the health status of children in South West Nigeria(This Volume of the AlMS published in collaboration with The Department of Computer Science, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2015-06) Babatunde, E. Parents should be educated through print and electronic media on die need to plant trees to combat die effect of die ozone layers depletion.Item Evaluation of teachers and students perception of problems encountered in biology laboratory class in senior secondary schools in Nigeria(Department of Educational Management, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2016-06) Babatunde, E. O.Science innovations and their uses in economic, industry, communication, agriculture and medicine have reconstructed the lives, attitude and habit of most mankind during the last century. In this scientific and technological age, no citizen can function effectively without basic scientific literacy and. elementary skills .as health of millions of people in Nigeria depends on medical practitioners who use their knowledge and attitude derived from the study of practical biology to save the lives of people suffering from diseases. Despite the importance of practical oriented subjects, little efforts had been made by researchers to evaluate the problems associated with teachers and students perception of practical biology in secondary schools. This study evaluated teachers and students perception of problems encountered in practical biology in senior secondary schools in Nigeria. Three hypotheses are formulated, and tested in the study. This is survey research. Fifty teachers and two hundred students are involved in the study. Two instruments: Teachers Problems Perception of Practical Biology Questionnaire and Students. Problem Perception of Practical Biology Questionnaire, with reliability coefficient of 0.96 and 0:89 respectively. Data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at p<0.05 level of significance. Result revealed a significant difference in the perception of problems encountered in Practical Biology by male and female students ((t=~2.179, df = 198, P<.05) but there was no significant difference between male and female teachers' perception of problems encountered in practical Biology ((t=0.723, df = 48, P>.05). Moreover, the result shows a significant difference in the perception of problems encountered in practical Biology by both teachers and students (t= 9.052, df = 248; P< 0.05} but no significant relationships between teachers' and students' perception of problems encountered in practical Biology (r=-0.031, P>0.05). It is recommended that each period of Biology class should be doubled to facilitate teaching-learning in theory and practical while seminars and workshop should be regularly organized for teachers to build their capacity.Item Influence of school absenteeism, peer influence and parental factors on students’ achievement in basic science and technology in Ibadan Metropolis(Department of Human Kinetics, University of Ibadan, 2018) Babatunde, E. O.A school is a place of learning in morality and inculcating discipline in students. It is established as the agent of the society to mould the habits, interest, attitudes and feelings of children and transmit societal norms, culture, values’ and traditions from one genera/ion to another. In spite of the advantages of schooling, some students do not attend classes and the situation in the secondary schools regarding the issue of absenteeism has damaging effects on students’ academic achievement. Therefore, this study examined the impact of school absenteeism, parental factors and peer influence on the academic performance of junior secondary school basic science and technology students in Ibadan metropolis. Five research questions guided this study. The study is a survey with a population of 143,692 junior secondary school students in Ibadan metropolis from where 800 students were selected using simple random sampling technique. Three instruments used are: “Students Attendance Record” (SAR) obtained from the school register. “Parental Factor and Peer influence Questionnaire (PFPIQ), r=0.82 and “Students Achievement Test” SAT) r=0.79. Data collected was subjected to descriptive analysis of frequency counts, percentages and mean and inferential statistics using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple regression analysis at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed a significant relationship between absenteeism and students’ achievement (.r=.284*, N=1091, p. 05). There was a positive significant relationship between peer influence and students’ achievement (r = 247*, n - 1091, p<. 05), absenteeism from school, lack of positive support from parents and peer influence affects students’ academic performance. Therefore, parents should support their children and monitor their activities while strong ties should exist between the school and the home to prevent absenteeism and negative peer influence.Item Investigating 21st century creativity skills through learning styles prevalence among secondary school students in Ibadan, South-West, Nigeria(Institute of Education, University of Ibadan on-behalf of Participating West Africa Universities and Ministries of Education, 2014) Otunla, A. O.Investigating 21st century creativity skills through learning styles prevalence among secondary school students in Ibadan, South-West, NigeriaItem Investigation of factors that induce premarital sexual intercourse among adolescents in secondary schools in Nigeria(European Scientific Institute, 2019-03) Babatunde, E. O.Adolescence is a period of life that is characterized by dramatic changes in biological processes in physical and social contexts. The period can be demanding and challenging because adolescents are pre-occupied with self- identity, self-image and acceptability in the society as well as self- awareness since the action to be taken is a big part of person’s life in the future particularly on whether or not to engage in premarital sexual intercourse. This study investigated factors that induce adolescents to engage in premarital sexual intercourse among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study was guided by three research questions and one hypothesis and adopted survey research design. Multistage sampling technique was used to sample 600 students from all the six geo-political zones in Nigeria. One instrument with reliability coefficient of 0.79 was used for data collection. Descriptive and Inferential statistics was used to analyze the data collected, Finding shows that previous sexual abuse experience (75%) was the most potent factor that induces premarital sexual intercourse and four of the of the independent variables showed significant contribution to the dependent variable: previous sexual abuse experience ((3 = .290, p<.05), smoking of prohibited drugs ({3 = -.345, p<.05), peer influence (p = .225, p<.05), poor housing condition (p = .126, p<,05). It was recommended that adolescents should avoid engaging in premarital sexual intercourse and reduce curiosity about sex.Item Litero-numeracy skills as determinants of secondary school students' achievement in biology(Association of Educational Researchers and Evaluators of Nigeria, 2015) Babatunde, E. O.; Ojetunde, S. M.This study examined the extent to which secondary school students were equipped with basic numeracy and literacy skills required for optimum performance in Biology, investigated the nature and direction of relationship among literacy, numeracy and students' Biology achievement and determined which skills (literacy or numeracy) will significantly predict student's achievement in Biology. The study adopted survey design of correlational research type. The two educational zones were purposively selected out of which a total sample of 200 participants were drawn. Two instruments: Biology Achievement Test (BAT,) r=0.75 and Literacy-Numeracy Self-Efficacy Scale (LNSES) r=0.85were used for data collection. The findings revealed that both numeracy and literacy skills jointly and significantly contribute to student's Biology achievement F(2,196)=l\4.431, p<0.05, Furthermore, numeracy and literacy! can both relatively and significantly predict student's Biology achievement; Literacy Skill fi = (.315), t(200) = 4.525, p=.000, Numeracy Skills fi = (-.285), t(200) = -4.084, p=.000. The outcome of the study revealed that literacy> and numeracy could determine and predict student's achievement in Biology. Hence, it was recommended that in developing subject combination for Biology students, curriculum developers should combine subjects that will aids numerical and literacy ability/skills. of the Biology students because of their negative correlation with Biology achievement.Item Psychological factors as predictors of proneness to teenage pregnancy among public secondary school students in Ibadan, Oyo State(Institute of Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria and International Centre for Educational Evaluation, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2020-08) Elemide, B. O.; Babatunde, E. O.Teenage pregnancy is one of the socio-economic challenges confronting this millennium. Therefore, this study explored the proneness of girls to pregnancy and the proneness of boys to impregnating the girls, The study is a correlational research type. The sample comprised 1200 respondents from 12 public secondary schools in Ibadan (six from city and less city each), Oyo State. Two instruments namely Psychological Factors Questionnaire PFO (α = 0.68) and Proneness to Teenage Pregnancy Questionnaire of boys and girls to pregnancy PTPQ with (α ,0.67) and (α =0.60) respectively used to collect data from the respondents and data collected were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. All the predictors accounted for 55% of the variance observed in proneness of boys to impregnating girls and 31% of variance observed in proneness of girls to pregnancy. Parental attitude contributed most significantly to the prediction of proneness of boys to impregnating the girls while students' attitude contributed most significantly to the prediction of girls' proneness to pregnancy. Based on the findings, it is recommended that sexuality education should be effectively taught at secondary school level so as to instill in the students' the necessary values that make them abstain from premarital sexual activities.Item School facilities, parental subject perception and teachers’ professionalism as correlates of students’ learning outcome in agricultural science in Bayelsa State(Institute of Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria., 2018) Babatunde, E. O.Students' poor performance in science generally and Agricultural science in particular has been considered a serious problem in senior secondary school education by the major stakeholders in spite of various governmental efforts and instructional resources employed in the classroom to teach. The study carried out empirical investigation on school facilities, parental subject perception and teachers' professionalism as correlates of students' learning outcome in Agricultural Science. Four research questions that were raised and answered. This study adopted survey design of correlational type. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 40 SS2 students per school and 400 parents of agricultural students as well as 20 teachers giving a total of 820 respondents. The three independent variables include school facility, parent subject perception and teachers’ professionalism while the dependent variable is student learning outcome in Agricultural Science. The four instruments for data collection are: School Facilities Inventory (SF!) (r=0.86), Teachers' Professionalism Questionnaire (TPQ), (r=0.71), Parental Subject Perception Questionnaire (PSQ) (r =0.76) and Agricultural Science Achievement Test (ASAT) with reliability coefficient of 0.83. Inferential statistics was used to analyse the data collected. Results revealed a positive and negative significant relationship among the predictors (School Facility (r = .0.248, p< 0.05), Parental Subject Perception (r a -.0.244, p< 0.05) and Teachers' Professionalism (r = .0.250, p<0.05). Moreover, there is a positive multiple correlation among the three predictors(R = 0.343). Also, the model was found to be statistically significant (F 0, 3%) = 17.651, p < 0.05). It is therefore recommended that teachers should ignite student interest and increase student motivation to learn by making connections between what the students are learning and what is going on in their own lives.Item Social factors As determinants of teenage pregnancy proneness among public secondary school students in Ibadan, Oyo State(Positive Psychology Association of Nigeria with headquarters in University of Ibadan, Nigeria., 2021-06) Babatunde, E. O.; Elemide, B. O.In Nigeria, teenage pregnancy among secondary school students is becoming rampant.
