A.Purpose - Information seeking is a fundamental human process closely related to learning and problem solving, thus the information sourcing characteristics of users of the Kenneth Dike Library, University of lbadan is examined with a view to evaluating their use of modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities provided. Use patterns, user satisfaction with (he ICT facilities, and user preference of manual and electronic facilities provided are evaluated Methodology. Descriptive survey research to appraise the adequacy of modern ICT in the library was carried out. Questionnaire, interview and participatory observation methods were used Findings - The results show that majority of the users (81%) prefer the new ICT facilities to the manual, even though they encounter difficulties in use. Lack of constant power supply, limited access to online resources, lack of adequate user and staff training and non-creation of awareness for the ICT facilities is identified as some of the problems. The CD-ROM and the Internet are the most frequently consulted ICT facilities, while many called for enhancement and updating of the book/journal collection. Originality/value - The research brings to the fore types of ICT needed and sourced for by users, and the need for information providers and users to adapt to the changes. Challenges facing the library in information provision (IS well as the prospects are discussed, and recommendations made for future improvement and continuous evaluation.Item The contribution of philanthropic organizations to collection development in Nigeria acedemic libraries(Delhi library association, 2008-03) Ohinaike, A. B.; Oyelude, A. A.Discusses the contribution of philanthropic organizations to collection development in libraries in South Western Nigeria. Questionnaires, structured interview, and observation methods were used in gathering the required data. Using random sampling techniques, five tertiary institutions were selected from the seventeen in the Southwest. The study reveals that book donations from philanthropic organization have positive impact on collection development by increasing the volumes of books in their collection. It was also discovered that the major donor to the libraries was Book Aid International and that the books donated sometimes do not cut across all disciplines. Acquisition by purchase is not seriously affected by the donations as the libraries continue to acquire in spite of outside help. It is recommended that the donors in a way involve the receiving or benefiting universities in the selection exercise so as to meet the desired needs of the institutions.Item Storytelling across cultures: engendering literacy the 'papa Rudy' way(Sage, 2010-05) Egbokhare, O. A.; Oyelude, A. A.This article examines the approches to storytelling as a means of encouraging literacy employed by professor Rudy Wilson across cultures of the United States and Nigeria. It discusses the opportunities storytelling provides for children to develop an interest in reading and to build language skills. A report on an interview with Professor Wilson (known as 'papa Rudy' in Nigeria is supplemented by observations of his storytelling activities in Nigeria. The researches conclude that storytelling is a vaible tool for teaching and reading. Findings show that children across cultures love stories, but thier level of concerntration varies with the number of alternative activities to which the child is exposed. A.The role of women libraries, documentation and resource centres in the economic development of women is examined and the types of literature gathered, processed and disseminated is surveyed. The actvities of the centres concerning women education, information literacy level and the economic activities of the women in the community were observed and assessed to find out the impact they have on society. Women Special Centres and NGOs were used in the study. Questionnaire, interview and participatory observation methods were used in data gathering. The results show that the Women centers run literacy programs for women and girls and also provide training for less priviledged women to facilitate their economic independence as they make a living from skills acquired through vocational training. Women farmers are assisted in getting loans, and the libraries provide needed literature in book and audio-visual form for them. Information related to their reproductive health is also provided. Women depend to a great extent on the resources and facilities of these centres. A.Item Newspaper collection utilization patterns in a Nigerian acedemic library(Nigerian library association (Lagos state chapter), 2005) Oyelude, A. A.; Oshinaike, A. B.The study surveys users of the newspaper collection in the Kenneth Dike library, university of Ibadan, Ibadan to find out the utilization pattern of the users and determin the effectiveness of the newspaper provision and services. Ninety six (96) library users were interviewed using questionnaire and direct interview methods. Participatory observation methods were also employed to get the information. The findings indicate that newspaper users in the library are facing some general problems. Adequate space needs to be provided for newspaper readers in acedemic libraries. Indexing of the newspapers will also help make information retrieval easier. It is recommended that library schools should provide courses that will deal with newspaper indexing, organization of newspaper collections, preservation and dissemination of newspaper information should be taught. A professional librarian, a library officer and a library attendent, for the effective provison of adequate newspaper information services, should man the newspaper section.Item Evaluating special library services: women's research and documentation centre(WORDOC) library, 1993-2003(Nigerian library association(Oyo state chapter), 2003) Oyelude, A. A.The special library services of the Women's Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC), university of Ibadan, Nigeria is evaluated in this paper. Questionnaire, direct interview and observation methods were used in the evaluation.In the decade covered, it was discorved that the library is well used by students and researchers in the university community. 64.3% of the respondents were satisfied with the services while 35.7% were not. 37. 5% of the users make use of the library because it gives them access to current books and materials. 30.4% because their reference enquiry are adequatly met, 19.6% because both reference and literature requirements are met and 3.6% because they have reading space. The importance of the library as a special centre bringing togethera collection on women and gender issues is noted. It was discovered that the library has resources that are rare and specialised but more attention needs to be pointed at acquisition and collection development as well as cataloguing and classification procedures.
