J.Item Awareness of electronic resources databases and assessment of Information Technology (IT) facilities used by distance learners at the Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria(Nigerian Library Association, Benue State Chapter, 2016-12) Ilesanmi, T. A.This study examined awareness of electronic resources aim assessment of Information Technology (IT) facilities being used to access electronic resources databases available in Kenneth Dike Library (KDL), University of Ibadan, by the distance learners (DLs). Survey method was adopted for this study. The population of the study consisted of ninety one (91) distance learning students drawn from the four (4) faculties that offer distance learning programme in the institution. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data collected were analysed, using frequency and simple percentage. The study found that majority of DLs lack awareness and knowledge of available e-resources databases in the library. However, their assessment of the library IT facilities was on the average. The paper concluded that, for the distance learners to have adequate knowledge in respect of the available electronic resources, particularly in their subject areas, creating awareness at the main library, faculty and departmental levels is necessary. Methods on how to enhance and sustain sensitisation and provision of supportive IT facilities in order to effectively utilise the available electronic databases through KDL of the University of Ibadan formed part of the recommendations.Item Comparative study of virtual methods used for library service delivery among librarians in Southern Nigeria private universities(2023) Ilesanmi, T. C.This study examined the virtual methods of service delivery being deployed by librarians in private universities in Nigeria. The objective of the study was to analyse the virtual methods of service delivery among librarians and determine the predominant method used among the librarians. Survey research design was adopted for the study. Total enumeration technique was adopted for the study. A population of 181 librarians from 45 private universities in Southern Nigeria were involved. Data were gathered, analysed and presented using frequency counts, percentages, mean and standard deviation. The study found that librarians used different virtual methods of service delivery. Library website 157 (90%) and e-mail 132 (76.3%) were the prominent electronic media used by librarians while Facebook 59 (34%) and Whatsapp 57 (32.9%) were the predominant social media platforms applied for service delivery by librarians. Electronic media were more used for latest publications arrival, as well as library education and document delivery services while social media were more used for reference services and selective dissemination of information. In conclusion, virtual methods of service delivery were deployed by librarians in private universities for service delivery. In comparing the virtual methods, librarians used more of electronic media than social media to deliver services to their users. Therefore, electronic media were predominantly used than social media, many of the virtual methods were found to be underutilised while recommendations were proffered.Item Digitization of journal collections in libraries: a case study of Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Nigeria(Taylor & Francis, 2013) Ilesanmi, T. C.Digitization of journal collections in libraries is inevitable with the advent of Information Communication Technology (ICT). There is a need to digitize journals in the academic library in order to preserve and to give wider visibility and accessibility to information resources for teaching, learning, and research. This article describes the processes of journal collection digitization in Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan. Underfunding and copyright clearance are the challenges encountered, among others. The study recommends adequate funding and concludes that the benefit of instant access to digital information is the most distinguishing attribute in this present information age.Item The effects of library education on information seeking behaviour of first-year students at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria(Nigerian Library Association, Kwara State Chapter, Ilorin, 2016) Oseghale, O.; Ilesanmi, T. C.This study was carried out to investigate barriers encountered by fresh students in seeking information and the extent to which library user education can help in improving their information seeking behaviour at the University of Ibadan. The actual utilization of resources in the library remains inconsistent, low and unsatisfactory. Considering that low utilization of library resources undermines the huge investment on library resources and personnel retention, this study has examined the barriers encounter by students in information seeking and the extent to which library orientation can help in improving information seeking behaviour of first year undergraduate students at the University of Ibadan. Survey research design was adopted for the study. Using a systematic sampling technique, a total of 230 first year students drawn from six faculties participated in the study. Results show that majority of first year students participated in use education in KDL but encounter information seeking challenges in the library. Because of poor perception of the library which makes them doubt the ability of the library to meet their information needs. The study suggests that effective utilization of academic library resources is dependent on perceived availability of relevant information materials, proper understanding of the products and services offered by the library and user’s ability to utilize information retrieval tools and systems. It discussed among other things, provision of background information about the initiative, looking at digitisation initiative from global perspective, taking decisions on what part of the collections to be digitised, why is digitisation so accentuated, statement of problem, justification for embracing digitisation initiative, critical elements of digitisation processes, copyright issues, handling copyright issues, using Sherpa Romeo colour web page, basic library responsibilities in managing digital project (IR). a documentation of digitisation efforts at University of Ibadan Kenneth Dike Library: The story so far, prospects, lesson learnt and conclusion. In a nutshell, the whole essence of this paper is to document Kenneth Dike Library experience in respect of the digitization initiative taken in October. 2010, as a platform for implementing Institutional Repository (IR) for the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. The progress reports as well as other details in respect of digitisation processes are hereby provided. O.Institutional repository (IR) is an online locus deployed to manage intellectual outputs emanating from universities. Nigerian universities have witnessed an increase acceptance and subsequent contributions and use of the system. However, as the stem of the development keep increasing, there is a reported case of low awareness of the presence, types and usefulness of the systems particularly among the university studfents. The need to address this ugly development necessitated this study, a theoretical approach was employed and theories such as Actor Network Theory (ANT) as well as the Theory Constructivism were the theoretical frameworks were employed to underpin the study. The need to upscale effort at creating awareness on the type, purpose and potential benefits inherent in the IR was recommended as means of enhancing firm contribution and use of the system among the university community.Item Library consortium: IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria experience(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2012) Ilesanmi, T. C.Purpose – This paper aims to describe the library consortium experienced at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. Activities involved improving researchers’ timely access to resources for research for development. Design/methodology/approach – The approach taken was a librarian interview and observation of library records. Findings – The consortium involves agricultural libraries in both developing and developed countries. Using the library software Inmagic database enhances the web-based centralized online public access catalogue of all the participating institutions, the CGV Library. This enabled access to their comprehensive collections, promoting better library services to agricultural researchers. Hence, it bridges the digital gap between developing and developed countries. They are involved in joint acquisition of electronic journals and timely response to sharing their independent collections through electronic document delivery services. Practical implications – The paper recommends that Nigerian libraries, especially agricultural research institutes, could emulate the IITA library consortium. Originality/value – The paper provides recommendations to libraries wishing to form consortia in Nigeria and notes the positive impacts that this would have on national development.Item The need for electronic security devices installation in Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan(Medium Publishing Company and Educational Consult in Collaboration with Options Books Ibadan, Nigeria, 2013) Ilesanmi, T. C.This paper examines the need for electronic devices in handling unhealthy library related issues in academic libraries with a particular reference to Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. It discussed, among other things problems, justification for the installation of Electronic Security Devices (ESDs) and its implications for the university and library managements. The paper stressed the urgent need for the deployment of ESDs in Kenneth Dike Library as a result of perceived enormous advantages that can be derived from it. Finally, the implications and recommendations for effective implementation of electronic security devices in the Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Nigeria are proposed.Item Roles of the librarian in a research library in the digital era: challenges and the way forward(Taylor & Francis, 2013) Ilesanmi, T. C.This article describes the roles of librarians in a research library, particularly in the digital era. Librarians’ roles vary from the custodian of resources to providers of a diverse nature of activities ranging from collection development, organization of knowledge, information services, preservation and conservation, and management. Librarians perform the aforementioned functions traditionally by using printed tools ranging from collection development tools (e.g., publishers’ catalogues, books in print, Ulrich, bibliography); cataloguing tools (e.g., classification schemes such as Library of Congress Classification [LCC] and Dewey Decimal Classification [DDC]); information services (e.g., bulletin, notice board, flyers); preservation and conservation (e.g., clean shelves, use of acid free boxes); and so forth. The traditional ways of performing these functions is being eroded by modern technology. This calls for changes in the products and services of research libraries to the research community served. These changes and the roles that librarians play are discussed in this article. Also enumerated are the challenges, such as dwindling budgets, capacity building, inadequate facilities, among others, of optimizing innovative ways of achieving more enhanced services. C.Digital preservation is a global phenomenon and current trend that guarantees the maintenance of information contents. Libraries should he particularly concerned with digital preservation because digital resources of different types are increasingly becoming parts of their collections and as such need to be preserved for wider visibility access and posterity Kenneth Diki Library (KDL), University of Ibadan, Nigeria over the rears luis developed sets of best practices that have made digital preservation a success. Therefore, this paper discusses the facilities and processes put in place in KDL that ensure effective management of digital information contents that other universities could learn from in addition, the paper also highlights the challenges of digital preservation that are peculiar to the Nigerian environment. The paper suggests that funding digital preservation project should be given the topmost priority other suggestions include: acquisition of modern digital preservation equipment, employment of more staff, development of staff expert is; and exploration of other sources of electricity supply.Item Use of electronic databases by the scientists in IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria(The Department of Library and Information Science, Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, 2012-12) Ilesanmi, T. C.This paper examines the use of The Essential Electronic Agricultural Library (TEEAL), Swetswise, and JSTOR (Journal Archives) among International Institute of Tropical Agriculture scientists. Instruments used in this study were library records, interview and observation. The library records collected covered the period of five years (2006 to 2010). This paper revealed that IITA headquarters in Ibadan. Nigeria as well as other stations used the three databases. TEEAL among the three electronic databases was discovered as the most used database. C.; Mabawonku, I.The incorporation of social media into service delivery by librarians is essential to render contemporary and seem-less library services to the users. Studies have shown that awareness and perception constitute important factors in the use of emerging technology for personal use with paucity of literature on the use of social media for library service delivery. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the use of social media for service delivery by librarians in Southern Nigeria universities. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 669 librarians from the universities in Southern Nigeria. Total enumeration technique was adopted for the study. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that librarians used very few social media space for delivering library services. Low bandwidth, culminated in slow internet connection was the main challenge to the application of social media. C.This paper examines the web presence of intellectual outputs (IOs) of lecturers at the University of Ibadan. Some of the lecturers' outputs between the years 2000 and 2014 that were submitted for input into the Institutional Repository (IR) were examined. IOs are scattered around without a central platform to showcase them as institutional collections. Sample survey research design was used for the study. The study found that some of the IOs were not visible on any digital platform prior to the establishment of the University of Ibadan Institutional Repository (UIIR).'This could be due to print published journals and conference proceedings that do not hove World Wide Web (WWW) presence. The paper recommends that IR should be established in all universities in Nigeria to increase the web presence of lecturers' IOs. There should be sensitisation to promote the IOs addition into the IR.
