Pretest-posttest control group, quasi experimental design was adopted, three secondary schools for students with hearing impairment in Ibadan were purposively selected. Thirty-seven students with hearing impairment were randomly sampled for the study. The participants were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and control group, and the treatment lasted for eight weeks. Three instruments were used for data col lection. Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of covariance and Scheffe post-hoc. There was a significant main effect of treatment on management of off-task behaviour (F(2.23)= 8.109, p = 0.002 <0.05, η=0.41). The participants exposed to self-monitoring had the highest mean score (x 116.70) followed by the Experimental 1 Group (EGI) score (x= 102.50) while Control group (CG) group had the lowest mean scores of (x- 87.12). Gender had no significant main effect on the management of off-task behaviour of the participants. There was no interaction effect of treatment and gender on off-task behaviour of the participants. Thus, it became imperative to seek therapy that can best manage test anxiety among students with hearing impairment. This study therefore, examined the effect of rational emotive behaviour (REBT,) and relaxation (RT) therapies on test anxiety management among students with hearing impairment. The study adopted a pretest-posttest control group quasi-experimental research design with 3x2x2 factorial matrix. The study was conducted in 3 schools for students with hearing impertinent within Ibadan metropolis. 60 students were purposively select Jar the study. Each study group was pretested with English language achievement test at first session and post tested at last session to get the effectiveness of the treatments. Seven hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA,), scheffe post-HOC was used to establish the area of significance. Both REBT and RT were found to be effective in reducing test anxiety among students with hearing impairment. (F(2,36) = 20.668 P< .05, = .605). Gender among students with hearing impairment as represented in the result, (F(J3? = 6.597 P<.05,ul2=.196,) and (F0,37) — 4.498, P <.05, = .143) respectively. There was no significant main or interaction effect of treatment on gender and academic self-concept among the participants. O.Adolescents with hearing impairment are often viewed as individuals who are psychologically maladjusted as a result of poor environmental and personality factors. Consequently, their senses of belonging in the society have been reduced to the extent that their self image have been affected. Although, several studies on adolescents with hearing impairment have focus on their academic performance, but little attempt have been made to examine or study the environmental and personality factors. This study, therefore, examined the environmental and personality factors as correlates of psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment in secondary schools in Oyo state, Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted. The Purposive sampling technique was used to select 233 adolescents with hearing impairment from four integrated secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo and Ogbomoso, Oyo State. Four research instruments were used for data collection: Adolescents Home and School Adjustment Questionnaire (r=0.86), personality types Questionnaire (r=0.84), Adjustment to Hearing Loss Questionnaire (r=0.83) and Psychological Adjustment Inventory (r=0.68). Three research questions were answered and six hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Chi Square and Multiple Regression. Home environment (r=0.812, p< 0.05) and school environment (r=0.773, p< 0.05) were positively correlated with psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment. Home environment, school environment, age of onset and degree of hearing loss significantly predicted psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment (F(4,226) = 1014.54 p<0.05) and contributed 94.7% of the total variance to the dependent variable. However, age of onset and degree of hearing loss were not significantly correlated with psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment. Also, there were no significant associations among personality types, gender and psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment. The relative contributions of the independent variables to the psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment are as follows: home environment (β=0.624), school environment (β=0.570), age of onset (β=0.004), and degree of hearing loss (β=0.000) respectively. Home environment, school environment and personality types are important factors that enhanced psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment. O.; Popoola, O.The neglect of persons with special needs in the provision of essential services that could improve their quality of life is worrisome. It is expected that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will improve the quality of life of persons with special needs in Nigeria. Unfortunately, most of the programmes that are meant to alleviate the suffering of the citizens do not include those with special needs (persons with hearing impairment, visual impairment, intellectual disability and those with other forms of disabilities). If nothing is done to include persons with special needs in the MDGs programmes, they will lose their sense of belonging and find it difficult to have full participation in the activities of the society, and may not have equitable access to social services. It is in the light of this that this paper examined the MDGs, persons with special needs and their quality of life, as well as, MDGs and Nigerians with special needs. Recommendations were made based on the observations made by the authors.Item Gender, self-efficacy and personality traits as correlates of career choice of adolescents with hearing impairment in Oyo State, Nigeria(Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, 2014-10) Isaiah, O. Gender (r=.287, P<0.05), self-efficacy (r=.105, P<.05) and personality traits (r=.087, P<0.05) were positively correlated with career choice among adolescents with hearing impairment. Gender, self-efficacy and personality type significantly predicted the career choice of adolescents with hearing impairment (F(3,97) = 6.824, P<0.05) and contributed 74% of the total variance to the dependent variable. The relative contributions of the independent variables to career choice of adolescents with hearing impairment are as follows: Gender ((-.279), self- efficacy ((=.212) and personality traits ((=.045) respectively. Gender, self-efficacy and personality traits are important factors that enhanced career choice of adolescents with hearing impairment. Parents, teachers and rehabilitators should encourage adolescents with hearing impairment to come to term with their disabilities in order to choice careers that would make them to be economical independent.Item HIV/AIDS education and persons with special needs(2011-06) Isaiah, O.
