Item Rhetoric of conflict settlement in Yoruba traditional societies(2020-03) Isola, O. O.The modem justice system in Africa is clearly overwhelmed by the number of cases in the courts because of population explosion and inadequate resources to sustain the system. This trend has necessitated a fresh look at the traditional conflict settlement system and its potential to complement and relieve the modem justice system. Even though it has been playing large roles in conflict management at the grassroots communities in settling civil cases and supporting peaceful coexistence among the people, the system has not received adequate official recognition and hence its contributions has been limited. The paper explores the traditional conflict settlement system in Yoruba communities of southwest Nigeria and the procedures and rhetoric that sustains it. The potentials to complement the modem justice system towards achieving a sustainable peaceful society are discussed and suggestions are made on how the inherent benefits of traditional conflict settlement system in Yoruba communities could be maximally exploited if granted official recognitionItem Towards health security in Nigeria in 2050: Strategies for managing violent conflicts, humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters(2019-06) Isola, O. O.Introduction: Avery important but neglected aspect of healthcare delivery in Nigeria is the management of outcomes of violent conflicts, humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters within the framework of national health policy and available healthcare infrastructures and services. Although this aspect of national healthcare is often neglected in national healthcare discourses, it constitutes very crucial part of determinants of average life expectancy of citizens and general wellbeing of the population. Methods: Library and archival materials constituted the sources of data for the paper. Policy documents, reports and analysis of the health condition of Nigerians in relation to management of the outcome of natural, humanitarian emergences and violent conflicts published by non-governmental organisations, government bodies and international agencies were content analysed. Results: This article attempts to characterise the current condition of humanitarian emergencies and disaster management readiness from the purview of the health sector through assessment of the available emergency management and trauma facilities. It projects into the future situation of this aspect of national healthcare by the year 2050 when the population of the country is expected to double. It is observed that if the current despicable condition of the health facilities in the sector is not addressed, the situation is likely to become worse by the projected year and could portend dire situation for Nigeria. Conclusion: The paper makes prescriptions on remedies in terms of human resources development, erection of relevant infrastructures and acquisition of necessary equipment that could boost that aspect of national healthcare. Above all, there is need for strong leadership and political commitment to achieve qualitative improvement in the focused sector of the healthcare before year 2050Item Unconventional United Nations peacebuilding interventions in the 2014 Afghanistan elections and democratic transition(Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, 2018) Isola, O. O.; Aiki-Raji, K. B.Following a request by the Afghanistan Government for assistance to support the country’s independent election body in conducting credible and acceptable election in 2014, a mandate was issued by the United Nations Security Council to support the democratic transition in the country. However, observers have described the outcome of the transition as unconventional. This study explored the core reasons for the unconventionality of the UN intervention in Afghanistan. Qualitative data were collected through interviews, observations and focus group discussions conducted in Kabul, Badakshan, Baghlan, Kunduz and Takhar provinces during the transition. The specific activities of the UN and its agencies in supporting the 2014 Afghan general elections and challenges encountered were unraveled. While a peaceful transfer of power did occur, the process that ended the transition was not democratic but political. The peculiarities of the country’s local context hence determined the outcome of the transition. Therefore, the transition project cannot be a model for future UN initiativesItem Assessment of media coverage of human rights abuses in internally displaced peoples’ camps(Palgrave Macmillan, 2019) Isola, O. O.; Yusuf, O.Fire outbreaks have long played an important role in the formation of vegetation types in the Amazonia where the high moisture contents and dense canopies have historically made the Amazon rainforest extremely resistant to fire spread. However, the fires of 2019, which caused massive deforestation, have left the Amazon rainforest massively depleted of its biodiversity. While scholars have examined the propensity for the fire to spread, there is scanty literature on the long-term human security consequences of the fire on the environment and on humans. The fires were largely triggered by anthropogenic causes but spread as a result of climate change. In addition, the political dynamics of Brazil has accommodated and promoted agricultural and mining practices, which exacerbated and sustained the fire. The direct and indirect effects of the fire include loss of vegetation, loss of biodiversity, reduction in carbon stocks of the forest with potential consequences for global carbon cycle, eco-imbalance and threat to human security. To find a viable long-term solution to deforestation and achieve sustainable development in the Amazon, the underlying causes of the fires must be addressed. Affirmative actions are needed to be taken at both national and international levels while sensitization drive on the human insecurity consequences of forest fires must be pushedItem Rhetoric of conflict settlement in Yoruba traditional societies(2020-03) Isola, O.
