    Upper basic social studies as tool for value re-orientation for effective entrepreneurial education in Nigeria

    Introduction of Entrepreneurship education in schools was considered a significant factor for repositioning individuals to create employment opportunities and contribute to national development in Nigeria. However, values degeneration in society is seen as one of the limitations to the achievement of this reform. This paper is therefore concerned with the importance of entrepreneurship education in youth empowerment such as startups, self-employment, individuals’ economic reward, and satisfaction among others. More so, challenges of entrepreneurship education such as poor entrepreneurial attitude, low morale for skills acquisition and self-employment were discussed. Furthermore, the roles of social studies in entrepreneurship education in the promotion of students’ self - concepts and human relation skills; and development of the students' socio-political and moral insights were discussed. Suggestions were made on value re-orientation through effective teaching of social studies education at upper basic education and teacher education. Also, pre-service social studies teachers should be exposed to active learning strategies such as educational visits, inquiry, and value clarification and, so on, if the reform would bring desire impact on national development.

    Using service learning instructional strategy in teaching social studies for improving students’ creativity skills and reducing unemployment

    This study examined effect of service learning instructional strategy on students’ creativity skill. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the pretest-posttest control group quasi experimental design Two local government areas, which include Ibadan North and Akinyele local government were randomly selected from five local government in Ibadan metropolis while two schools were purposively selected in each of the local government. The participant were JSS1 students and a total number of 230 (131 female and 99 male) participants were used. Three validated instruments were used for the study. Namely, Student Creative Skill Scale (r= 0.71); Teachers Instructional Guide for Conventional Strategy and Service Learning Guide. Data collected were analysed using Analysis of Covariance. There was a significant main effect of treatment on students’ creative skill (F (1,219) = 6.166; p<0.05, partial η2 = 0.027). There was no significant main effect of gender on students’ creative skill There was no significant two-way interaction effect of treatment and gender on students’ creative skill (F (1,219) = 0.083, p>0.05, partial η2 = 0.000). It was therefore concluded that service Learning Strategy enhanced student acquisition of creative skill through entrepreneurial related topics in Social Studies. Social studies teachers should adopt this strategy when teaching entrepreneurial related topics.

    Where are we? lecturers receptivity of service learning in Nigeria

    Universities in Nigeria are established to perform three functions- teaching, research and community service. In spite of the establishment of several government and private-owned universities in Nigeria, most of these tertiary institutions have been criticised for not meeting the objectives of their establishment. This is because gaps between the gown and the town exist to the extent that the functionality of the education provided and the relevance of the certificates awarded to the society are being questioned. However, service learning was one of the ways used to bridge the gaps between the universities and communities in some of the developed and developing countries. This study therefore examined the extent to which lecturers incorporate service learning into teaching learning process. The study adopted mixed research design. Three research questions were posed for the study. Validated Service learning Structure Interview Schedule (r= 0.826) was administered to One hundred and fifty lecturers selected from three Universities in Southwest, Nigeria using multi stage sampling technique. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistic and content analysis. The results and implications of the findings were discussed while recommendations were also made.
