Item Family factors as predictors of violent behaviour among in-school adolescents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria(Nigerian School Health Association (NSHA), 2015) Odelola, J. O.The study examined family factors as predictors of violent behaviour of in school adolescents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. A sample of 277 respondents was selected using stratified random sampling. Three research hypotheses were tested. Self-developed and validated questionnaire with reliability co-efficient of 0.71 was used to collect data. Data were analysed with the use of inferential statistics of regression at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that joint effect of family factors (career family, family financial difficulty and violent family) on inschool adolescents’ violent behaviour was significant (F(3,273)=119.181 ; R=0.753; R2=0.567; R. Adj = 0.562; P<.05). Thus, it was concluded that violent behaviour is a major cause of injuries and death among adolescents. Among others, it was recommended that poverty alleviation programme, responsible parenthood as well as family life education should be provided by government.Item Effects of bullying on the psychological and mental wellbeing of adolescents in selected secondary schools in Ibadan, Nigeria.(2023) Afolabi, A.; Animashaun, O. F.Bullying is a complex and stressful experience that significantly impacts the psychological and mental well-being of adolescents. While its effects were often overlooked, recent attention from researchers, mental health professionals, social workers, and policymakers has focused on understanding how bullying influences adolescent mental health. This study used a descriptive survey design with a correlation approach to examine the impact of bullying on the psychological and mental well-being of adolescents. A sample of 280 students from tour secondary schools in Ibadan Metropolis (two public, two private) was selected using simple random sampling. Data collection utilized a mix of standardized and self-developed 'Instruments, focusing on bullying experiences and both short- and long-term psychological effects. Statistical analysis, including frequency counts and percentages for demographic data, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) for testing hypotheses at a 0.05 alpha level, was employed. The study revealed that all six short-term psychological variables—anxiety and fear (r = .114), anger and rage (r = .377), humiliation and shame (r = .308), sadness and loneliness (r = .499), self-harm/harm to others (r = .159), and school avoidance/absenteeism (r = .184)—showed significant correlations with bullying. Long-term effects such as erosion of self-esteem and confidence (r= .368). Post-traumatic stress disorder (r = .716), anxiety and depression (r= .278), self- destruction (r = .420), schizophrenia (r = .270), substance abuse (r = .255), and agoraphobia (r - .299) also had significant relationships with bullying among victims in these schools. The findings indicate a significant correlation between bullying and the mental well-being of adolescents, with r(298) = .372, p < 0.05. Additionally, psychological effects (r = .290, p < 0.05) were significantly related to mental well-being. The study concludes that bullying has both short-term and long-term adverse effects on the psychological and mental well-being of adolescents in selected secondary schools in Ibadan. It suggests that parents, teachers, school administrators, counselors, and social workers should be vigilant in identifying these effects to mitigate their impact on the mental health of adolescents.Item Influence of social networking on the psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria(2015-03) Oyewumi, A.; Isaiah, O.; Adigun, O.This study investigated the influence of social networking (SN) on the psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select adolescents with hearing impairment. A simple random sampling technique was also used to select 126 adolescents with hearing impairment who were thirteen years and twenty three years of age from both the junior and the senior secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State. 3 research questions were generated and one hypothesis was formulated. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire tagged “Social Networking (Social Media) Scale” with a reliability coefficient of 0.74. Data were analysed with inferential statistics of Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Multiple regression and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings revealed that use of SN have a positive significant relationship with emotional intelligence (r = .601; P < .05) and self-esteem (r =.280; P < .05) while SN has an insignificant relationship with loneliness (r = -0.150, p > 0.05) among adolescents with hearing impairment. The finding also found a joint relationship between use of SN, emotional intelligence, self esteem and loneliness (F(3,125) = 33.052, P < 0.05). The study found no significant difference in the use of SN among male and female adolescents with hearing impairment (t = 0.796; df =124; p > 0.05). The study concluded that use of SN have a great influence on psychological well-being, access to information, sustaining relationships and self expression among adolescents with hearing impairment. Based on these findings, it was recommended that adolescents with hearing impairment should be actively involved in physical and social activities with their hearing peers in order to boost their self esteem and emotional intelligence while it will eliminate issues of social isolation and facilitate social inclusion.Item Gender, self-efficacy and personality traits as correlates of career choice of adolescents with hearing impairment in Oyo State, Nigeria(Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, 2014-10) Isaiah, O. O.; Olawumi, S. K.The study examined the relationship among gender, self-efficacy, personality traits and career choice among adolescents with hearing impairment in Oyo State, Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was adopted in carrying out the study. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 100 male and female adolescents with hearing impairment from Durbar Grammar School, Oyo and Methodist Grammar School, (Deaf Unit), Bodija, Ibadan, Nigeria. A 30-item questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis. Gender (r=.287, P<0.05), self-efficacy (r=.105, P<.05) and personality traits (r=.087, P<0.05) were positively correlated with career choice among adolescents with hearing impairment. Gender, self-efficacy and personality type significantly predicted the career choice of adolescents with hearing impairment (F(3,97) = 6.824, P<0.05) and contributed 74% of the total variance to the dependent variable. The relative contributions of the independent variables to career choice of adolescents with hearing impairment are as follows: Gender ((-.279), self- efficacy ((=.212) and personality traits ((=.045) respectively. Gender, self-efficacy and personality traits are important factors that enhanced career choice of adolescents with hearing impairment. Parents, teachers and rehabilitators should encourage adolescents with hearing impairment to come to term with their disabilities in order to choice careers that would make them to be economical independent.Item Psycho-demographic predictors of academic achievement motivation among secondary school adolescents in Ibadan metropolis(2014-05) Alade, A. O.This study investigated the predictive influence of self-esteem, academic optimism, attribution style, age and gender on academic achievement motivation among adolescents in schools of science in Ibadan metropolis. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A sample of two hundred and eighty seven participants was randomly selected from three secondary schools drawn from three local government areas within Ibadan Metropolis. The participants comprised 187 male and 100 female and the age range was between 12 to 21 years, with mean age of 16.05. Data was subjected to Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regressions analysis. The result revealed that each of the independent variables have significant relationship with academic achievement motivation of secondary school students. However, gender made no relative contribution to the dependent variable. The study has implications for all educational stakeholders such as students, teachers, parents and counselling psychologists. It however suggested the need for counselling psychologists to assist students develop self affirmative attitude in order to boost their self-esteem, encourage optimistic disposition and take responsibility for their academic successesItem Home environmental factors as predictors of sexual abuse among school adolescents in Ibadan North local government(Department of Social Work, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, 2022-01) Adeoti, A. B.; Ibidun, A. O.Rape among adolescents has becoming reoccurring and a major public worries with associated health, psychological, and social consequences. The study examined home environmental factors as predictors of sexual abuse among selected post primary students in Ibadan. This paper utilized a descriptive survey research design. The total respondents comprise 300 students randomly selected from selected secondary schools. A questionnaire tagged “Home Environmental Factors as Predictions of Sexual Abuse among School Adolescents The instrument was pre-tested in another school to ascertain the reliability of the instrument while the instrument was validated by experts from a related discipline. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at 0.05level of significance was utilised in data analysis. Results indicated that there was a significant links between the home and sexual abuse among school adolescents (r = 0.544, N = 300, P < 0.05), there was a significant connection between the environment and sexual abuse among school adolescents (r = 0.466, N = 300, P< 0.05). Finally, there was significant negative effects of sexual abuse among school adolescents (r = 0.505, N = 300, P < 0.05). This paper recommended that stakeholders should inculcate decent dressing for their wards while moral and religion education should be inculcated.Item Effect of alcohol abuse on psycho-social well-being among young adolescents at Beere/Oja Oba Area, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria(Department of Special Education, University of Ibadan, 2021-07) Adeoti, A. B.Alcoholic abuse has negative effect on young adolescents social and psychological well-being. The study examined the effect of alcohol abuse on psychosocial well-being of young adolescents who reside in Beere/Oja-Oba, Ibadan South East Local Government Area of Oyo State. The descriptive research design was used for the study while purposive sampling technique was employed to select one hundred and twenty (120) respondents. (Pearson product moment correlation, Multiple regression and chi-square were used to analyse the data. The findings revealed that there was no significant relationship between alcohol abuse/consumption and psychological wellbeing of young adolescents; there was no significant connection between alcohol abuse and social well-being among young adolescents; and that there was no significant consequence of alcohol abuse on interpersonal relationship of young adolescents. The study, therefore, recommended that key factors such as inculcating the idea of guidance counselor for young adolescents should make use of their time wisely and drink responsibly if they must drink and that any adolescent below eighteen years should not be allowed access to alcohol.Item The role of guidance counsellors in the career development of adolescents and young adults with special needs(British Journal Publishing INC., 2011) Lazarus, K. U.; Ihuoma, C.Guidance counsellors work individually and with other educators to meet the developmental needs of all students, including those with special needs or disabilities. Significantly, they focus on the academic, career, and personal/social developmental needs of all students, including those with special needs. Inconsistencies in the roles of practising guidance counsellors have caused some specialists in education to begin to address the emerging role of the counsellor regarding students with special needs, especially with respect to their career development. Since the level of happiness an individual exudes in life is closely related to the type of career the person chooses, and other career development activities relating to job retention and .advancement, guidance counsellors must endeavour to expose their students to several career development activities in order to help them to successfully, choose occupations, prepare for, enter into and progress in them. This paper discusses what career development is and some theories of career development. It also discusses factors that affect career choice. O.; Osisanya, A.There has been an increased incidence of hearing -related difficulty due to consistent use of mobile phones, particularly those with multiplicity of functions for continued calls and music playing functions. Thus, this study investigated the incidence and patterns of hearing loss associated with the consistent use of mobile telephone among adolescents in Ibadan Metropolis. The study adopted an ex-post facto research design, sampling 500 adolescents through the use of Hearing and Mobile Telephony Questionnaire (HMTQ). Frequency counts and percentage were employed to answer the three (3) research questions raised. The findings revealed that 84.6% were without hearing loss as against 15.4% of the participants who presented with different degrees and patterns of hearing loss. Forty two (54.55%) were males, while 35(45.45%) were the female participants who presented with hearing loss. 423 participants claimed having normal hearing ability even with the consistent use of mobile phone, while 43 of the participants presented with low-frequency hearing loss at left ear, and 46participants were found with high-frequency hearing loss at the right ear. Further, it was established that people should be enlightened on the dangers of consistent use of mobile telephone to hearing. Therefore,, it is recommended that mobile phone should not be used for a long period of time, even when used for calls, and leisure such as music playing functions. The youths should be dissuaded from continued use of ear-piece during leisure. Also, adolescents should go for hearing assessment on a regular basis so as to detect early any changes along their auditory performance
