Item Exploring Relationship between Social Media Use and Antisocial Behaviour among Tertiary Institution Students: An Investigative Study of Influencing Factors(African Scientific Research and Innovation Council Plot 114 Yakubu Gowon Crescent Asokoro Abuja, Nigeria, 2023-07-21) Oni, T.M; Osu,C.UThis study explored the relationship between social media use, antisocial behaviour and its impact on tertiary institution students. The influencing factors were examined. The prevalent types of antisocial behaviour on social media platforms among students in tertiary institutions, contributory factors to the development of antisocial behaviour, the average hours spent by students on social media per day, as well as the difference between male and female students in their use of social media to facilitate online harassment in tertiary institutions were identified.Item Parenting style and social media use as predictors of social studies students' value acquisition in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria(Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2020-06) Omoniyi, T. O.This study was carried out to examine parenting styles and social media use as predictors of Social Studies students' value acquisition. Five hundred students were randomly selected from 10 secondary schools (five private and five public schools). Three research instruments, namely; Scale of Parenting Style r= 0.78; Students' Social Media Use Questionnaire r-0.77; and Students' Value Acquisition Scale r=0.71 were used. Finding shows that authoritative parenting style has direct link with student's value acquisition while other variable may rely on some predictors to have direct links. All the five independent variables accounted for 15% joint contribution to students' value acquisition. The findings also revealed relative contribution of authoritative parenting style to students' value acquisition. It is recommended that authoritative parenting style should be employed in raising children to learn how to think and make responsible choices. There is the need to discourage negative use of social media by secondary school students both at home and in school.Item Home environment and social media as correlates of academic underachievement of high ability secondary school students in Oyo metropolis(Ife Centre for Psychological Studies, 2017) Adelodun, G. A.This study examined the relationship between home environment, social media and academic underachievement of high ability secondary school students in Oyo metropolis. The population of this study comprised all high ability Secondary School Students One (SS 1) in Oyo Metropolis. Three hundred respondents were drawn from the twenty schools selected from the four local governments in Oyo Metropolis. Slosson Intelligence Test and Contributions of Home Environment and Social Media Scale were used as instruments. Slosson Intelligence Test was constructed and validated by Slosson (1961) while Contributions of Home Environment and Social Media Scale was designed by the researcher which was later validated and the reliability co-efficient yielded r -0.78. The result of the first hypothesis revealed that there is a significant relationship between home environment and academic underachievement of high ability students. The indication is that the relationship between home environment and academic underachievement of high ability students resulted in the lower r=.68 against p-value .195. The result of the second hypothesis revealed that there is a significant relationship between social media and academic underachievement of high ability students. This indicated that r-crit of .62 against p-value .195. It was recommended that parents should serve as good role models to their high ability children by embarking on good social habits that is worthy of emulation. Parents and teachers must also counsel the high ability students from time to time to be mindful of what they browse on the internet.Item Perceived effectiveness of social media platforms for HIV and AIDS information communication among university undergraduates in south-west Nigeria(Department of Mass Communication Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria, 2017-04) Alonge, A. J.; Kiai, W.; Ndati, N.The study examined the perceived effectiveness of social media on HIV and AIDS communication among undergraduates in southwest Nigeria. Data was obtained through the administration of 355 copies of structured questionnaire to respondents in University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University and University of Ibadan. Data obtained was analysed using tables, simple percentages and bivariate regression analysis. The results showed that awareness of social media enabled 71.3% of the respondents to use social media sites. Out of this percentage, it enabled 27% to interact; 25.1% to exchange ideas, 11.3% to be informed on HIV and AIDS, and 7.9% stated increased knowledge on HIV. The result further showed that 90.7% of the respondents stated that HIV and AIDS information on social media platforms was very useful. Result showed that 23.7% of the male and female respondents had sexual intercourse 3 months ago, out of this, 10.2% used a condom (s), while 13.5% did not make use of condom. Despite this high level of awareness, regression result showed that sharing of HIV and AIDS information on social media did not have significant influence on condom use (F = 2.586, p>0.05). The study suggested that HIV and AIDS communication on social media should prioritize basic messages such as encouraging use of condoms and other prevention methods.
