Item Social media Use as correlate of reading habits among undergraduates in University of Ibadan, Nigeria(2021) Olaojo, P. O.; Adetoba, M. O.Social media comprises of websites and applications that enable users to create and share contents or to participate in social networking. Results showed different types of social media. However, it is discovered that majority of undergraduates devote more time to use social media for different activities like chatting, social activities and reading. This study employed descriptive survey research design targeting undergraduates of University of Ibadan in the 2018 / 2019 session which equalled 14,778. Multistage sampling technique with a 10% was used to select 247 undergraduates across six faculties. The questionnaire was the main data collection instrument and data analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency, percentage and correlation analysis. The Statistical package for social Sciences (SPSS) was the Software used for data analysis. The findings of the study, amongst others revealed that respondents used Facebook most (92.7%) and Instagram (78.1%) has the least. The findings showed that respondents used social media mostly to chat with friends (94.3%) and share information (87.4%). On frequency of use, the study revealed that Facebook (x =4.00), and Wikipedia (x =3.26) were frequently used by respondents. Findings also revealed that there was a positive relationship between social media use and reading habits of undergraduates in University of Ibadan (r = .200, n= 247, p (002)<05) The study concludes that social media should be prudently utilised, not only as a means of communication stay among family and friends but must be used reasonably as a rich educational tool. The study recommended that; efforts should be geared by the Institution authorities towards creating enabling environment for reading, as these will enhance development of reading habit and strengthens academic pursuit of students.Item Postgraduates students' utilization of the ict: implications on academic achievement(Department of Guidance and Counselling, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, 2016-07) Tella, A.ICT usage patterns among students including use of the internet is increasingly being investigated. One area of interest for educators relates to the home use of the computer and the internet by postgraduate students and its relationship to academic achievement. This is particularly relevant as the amount of time that postgraduate students spend at home on the computer appears to be rising. This trend may have an impact on academic performance and their research initiative and prowess. The purpose of this study was to examined postgraduate's uses and utilization of the internet and its implication on their achievement at the University of Ibadan. Two hundred and fifty postgraduate students from twenty systematical selected departments formed the study sample. A modified internet use scale was used to gather data for the study. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square and Freidman test. The results indicate that; majority of the respondents access the internet 1-5 hours per week, some access the internet 6-20 hours per week while others access the internet between 21-25 hours per week. Further to these, most respondents use the internet for the purpose of obtaining course related information and to enrich their research. The results also reveal that internet contributes significantly to academic achievement of the respondents. The study recommends among others the provision of more computers and internet facilities at library and postgraduate school to compliment the existing few provided.Item Potential graduates’ knowledge, readiness, and disposition to 21st century employability skills in the University of Ibadan, Ibadan Nigeria(Department of Adult and Primary Education, University of Ilorin, Nigeria, 2023-11) Omoniyi, T. O.The interplay between knowledge acquisition, readiness for practical application, and the disposition of graduates towards developing and utilizing these skills is of paramount importance in the 21st1 century world of works. This study assessed potential graduates ’ knowledge, readiness, and disposition to 21st century employability skills at the University of Ibadan (UI). The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population comprised all undergraduate students in the university. Out of 17 faculties, balloting mechanism was used to select 12 faculties. A purposive technique was used to select 590 students. A questionnaire termed Potential Graduates Employability Skills (PGES) with four subsections, was used for data collection. A descriptive statistic of percentage, frequency count, mean and standard deviation were used to analysed data collected. Result revealed that potential graduates ' knowledge was average, readiness level was high and disposition to 21st century was positive. The findings shed light on the significance of cultivating a proactive mindset, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning as potential graduates of the 21s' century. Furthermore, there is need for educational institutions and policymakers to prioritize the integration of 21st century employability skills within curricula, foster culture that encourages graduates’ development of these skills. Critical curriculum reforms and pedagogical innovations to enhance students’ knowledge, readiness and foster a positive disposition towards acquiring the essential skills demanded by the modern workforce is necessary at this material time.Item Exploring service learning in redesigning and implementing education economics curriculum: experience of university students(2022) Gbadamosi, T. V.; Jacob, U. S.; Pillay. J.This study examined service learning as an effective strategy for implementation of the Economics curriculum for result-oriented university education. The study was guided by two research questions, adopted a qualitative research approach and utilised phenomenology design. A purposive sampling technique was used to select all students from the departments of Educational Management, Arts and Social Sciences Education, Adult Education, Guidance and Counselling Education, and Special Education who had taken Economics Methods. The reason for the selection of the students was that they had participated in service learning and would be able to provide answers to the research questions. Focus group discussion and key informant interview guides were used to collect data from the participants. The ATLAS. Qualitative software package was used to analyse the data. The findings of the study revealed that service learning was an effective strategy for preparing pre-service teachers for the world of work as it gives undergraduates an opportunity to get involved in communal services such as tutoring, advocacy, and environmental sustainability, among others. It also enhances students’ employability skills, such as financial literacy, project management, teamwork, and resourcefulness. It was therefore recommended that service learning should be infused into the teacher education curriculum for effective implementation of the economics curriculum and to promote undergraduate employability skills.Item Academic staff’s motivation for online teaching in Nigerian universities: empirical evidence from the University of Ibadan(2022-07) Itasanmi, S. A.; Oni, M. T.; Ekpenyong, V. O.; Ajani, O. A.; Omorinkoba, O. G.This study investigated the academic staff’s motivation for online teaching in Nigerian universities using a mixed-methods case study research design. The main instrument used for this study was a questionnaire named ‘Academic Staff’s Motivation for Online Teaching Survey (SMOTS)', which was complemented by in-depth interviews. A total of 195 academic staff across various academic faculties and units in the University of Ibadan participated in the study. Data analysis was done using frequency count, simple percentages, mean and standard deviation, while the in-depth interviews were thematically analysed. The result of the study revealed that the majority of the academic staff have not taught using online platforms before and their frequency of online teaching consideration is occasional. Additionally, they have a high perception of online teaching in terms of helping to learn new technology and encouraging intellectual challenges. The academic staff indicated that individual training opportunities, personal decisions and group training opportunities are among the major resources that can motivate them for online teaching. Likewise, the introduction to new technology for teaching, institutional expectation, and students’ enrolment are the major external motivating factors for online teaching. It was further revealed that most of the academic staff feel motivated to teach online. However, erratic power supply, work overload, and limited knowledge of e-learning stand as major hindrances to online teaching adoption among academic staff. This study has discovered the need for Nigerian university managements to vigorously embark on capacity building of academic staff for online teaching. This will help them to cultivate or enhance basic information and communication technology skills and other essential competencies needed to manage online learning environmentsItem Level of awareness of HIV/AIDS pandemic among undergraduate students of the university of Ibadan(Institute of Education, University of Ibadan on behalf of participating West Africa Universities and Ministries of Education, 2012) Folaranmi, O. O .The study assessed the level of awareness of students of the University of Ibadan about HIV/AIDS, and the effective preventive strategies the students know that can reduce the further spread of HIV/AIDS, and suggest ways to cultivate the right attitudes concerning issues relating to AIDS in order to make the University of Ibadan an AIDS-free institution, and to make recommendations on how students can be involved in reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS. This study employed descriptive research design in which information was obtained from an observed population and questionnaires were used as the research instrument. The result of the findings have shown that a very good number of students are aware of the issue of HIV/AIDS, its signs and symptoms, its mode of transmission and various preventive strategies that could curtail the spread of AIDS, although a few students are still doubting the reality of HIV/ADS. The roles of social workers and prevention as well as curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS were recommended.
