Influence of feedback mechanism on students’ performance in economics in Kogi State, Nigeria
(Distance Learning Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, 2007) Onuka, A. O. U.; Junaid, I. O.
This paper discusses formative or developmental evaluation whose results, when used as feedback mechanism, would lead to improvement of students’ academic performance at the secondary school level. Two questions were asked on the use and influence of feedback mechanism on students academic. performance. A ten-tern checklist was used to find answers to the questions, while 20 teachers were interviewed on the subject of the investigation. The data were collected from continuous assessment as well as the Senior School Certificate Examination result of two sessions (1999-2001). The data were analysed using frequency counts and using percentages. Correlation statistic was also used to answer the hypothesis so postulated for the purpose of the study. The performance in economics by students was found to have improved appreciably. Some recommendations were made for effective use of feedback mechanism for better results in secondary schools. They include adequate funding the encouragement of frequent use of formative evaluation to provide feedback on students’ performance; it was also recommended that organization of seminars on formative evaluation and feedback for teachers among others be undertaken at regular intervals.

The influence of some indices of accountability for quality educational programmes in Oyo state, Nigeria
    (IJNRL, 2009-06) Ibode, O. F.
Accountability was traditionally used to refer to public service, in which stewardship of public funds must be accounted. Accountability as an educational concept, in recent years, has to do with advancing the effectiveness of school systems. If educators are to be accountable for students’ performance, the expected performance should be clearly stated and adequately measured. Accountability should also provide information on how money has been spent, especially on infrastructure/facilities, teachers salaries and what return has been made on investment in terms of students’academic achievement. In this regard, researchers (Obemeata 1995, and Yoloye 2003, 2004) emphasized the need for accountability to demonstrate returns of taxpayer’s money invested in education. For instance, Mark (2009), in a paper titled “Looking into Linking Teacher Pay to Student Performance” stated that President Obama “laid out his vision for education... including linking teacher pay to student performance”. For accountability to flourish there must be a positive link between accountability on the teachers ’ part and the salaries they are paid for their particular job which is teaching. Schrag added that teachers are answerable for what they do.

Public examination bodies and the exigencies of school-based assessment
(Association of Vocational and Science Educators, 2009-08) Ibode, O. F.
Literature has revealed that public examination bodies face numerous problems in the process of using school-based assessment scores for the certification of students. Therefore, there is need more than ever before, to evolve a sound method of integrating school-based assessment in the certification grades of secondary school students. Unfortunately, studies have shown that some teachers lacked competent experience in the practice of school-based assessment, while some award marks arbitrarily thereby bringing to question the validity and reliability of school-based assessment scores. This paper addresses the issues raised above and more, in order to ameliorate some of the problems.

Classroom management and use of instructional aids
(Institute of Education, University of Ibadan on behalf of Participating West Africa Universities and Ministries of Education, 2004-03) Ibode, O. F.
Classroom management, preparation and handling of instructional materials are crucial issues in present day teaching and learning. CIass room management in this context is the act or skill in the organization and presentation of lessons in such a way that all learners are actively involved in learning. Effective classroom management is not only positively related to certain attributes of the teacher, but it is also positively linked to the quality of the school environment and the nature of decision making process adopted by the school authority. As regards instructional materials and their preparation and use, this paper highlights their importance as instructional aids, especially the use of the computer in education. The present paper further discusses the various ways in which teaching aids could be obtained.
