Item Improving access of persons with hearing impairment to employment opportunities through collaboration of stakeholders in Oyo state, Nigeria(Department of Social Work, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, 2018-06) Isaiah, O. O.; Ezele, N. E.This study examined access to employment opportunities by individuals with hearing impairment through stakeholders’ collaboration. Descriptive survey research design was adopted to carry out the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 87 coworkers and government officials (stakeholders) in Oyo State, Nigeria. Three research questions were answered. A self designed questionnaire-Access to Employment by Persons with Hearing Impairment Questionnaire (AEPHIQ) (r=0.77) was used to collect data. The data collected were analysed, using descriptive statistics of frequency count and percentage. The study revealed that the level of awareness of stakeholders about disability and employment was very low, the attitude of stakeholders towards employees with hearing impairment was negative and there was no collaboration of stakeholders about the employment of employees with hearing impairment. There should be increased level of awareness of stakeholders about disability and employment, societal attitude towards employees with hearing impairment should be positive and there should be collaboration among stakeholders concerning the employment of employees with hearing impairment. These will improve access to employment of individuals with hearing impairment.Item Parental factors as determinants of social inclusion of students with hearing impairment in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria(Journal of the Department of Special Education, University of Ibadan, 2013-07) Isaiah, O. O.; Azanor, F. O.The study examined parental factors as determinants of social inclusion of students with hearing impairment in Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design of the correlational type was adopted for the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 60parents of students with hearing impairment in Ibadan. One research instrument was used for data collection: parental factors and social inclusion questionnaire (r=0.83). Three research questions were generated and answered in the study. Data were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and multiple regression analysis. The study found that parents' marital status (r=0.782, <0.05), parenting style (r=0.539, <0.05) and socio-economic status (r=0.865, <0.05) correlated with social inclusion of students with hearing impairment. The findings of the study also showed that parents' marital status, parent socio- economic status and parenting style significantly predicted social inclusion of students with hearing impairment (F- ratio of 64.045p<0.05.). The relative contributions of the independent variables to the dependent variable are as follows: parent socio-economic status (β=0.851), parent marital status (β =0.184), parenting style (β =0.158) respectively. It was therefore, recommended that parents should play key roles in ensuring the inclusion of their children with hearing impairment into the mainstream of the society.Item Benefits of early audiological intervention to inclusion of children with hearing impairment(2013) Oyebola, M.; Isaiah, O. O.It has been established by scholars that hearing loss can be detected from as early as prenatal stage of life. This is an aspect of early intervention services for children from age 0 - 3 years. Children whose hearing losses are attended to early enough are velop faster in terms of speech, hearing and language. This paper addressed the concept of early audiological intervention and inclusion of children with hearing impairment, benefits of early audiological intervention to children with hearing impairment, roles of audiologists and key components of early audiological intervention. Recommendations were made based on the submission of the authors.Item Meeting the psychosocial needs of students with hearing impairment through counselling services(2013) Isaiah, O. O.; Aderibigbe, S. A.Adolescents with hearing impairment are often viewed as psychologically and socially maladjustment by all and sundry. This could be as a result of the inability of the environment to meet their psychological and social needs. Consequently, they have low sense of belonging in the society. Although, various scholars have attempted to address the psychosocial needs of students with hearing impairment through various strategies. This paper addressed the meeting of the psychosocial needs of students with hearing impairment though counselling services. It is strongly believed that counselling services in our schools will help students with hearing impairment to be aware of the various opportunities that will help them to adjust to their environment maximally.Item Environmental and Personality Factors as Correlates of Psychological Adjustment of Adolescents with Hearing Impairment in Secondary Schools in Oyo State, Nigeria(2011) Isaiah, O. O.Adolescents with hearing impairment are often viewed as individuals who are psychologically maladjusted as a result of poor environmental and personality factors. Consequently, their senses of belonging in the society have been reduced to the extent that their self image have been affected. Although, several studies on adolescents with hearing impairment have focus on their academic performance, but little attempt have been made to examine or study the environmental and personality factors. This study, therefore, examined the environmental and personality factors as correlates of psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment in secondary schools in Oyo state, Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted. The Purposive sampling technique was used to select 233 adolescents with hearing impairment from four integrated secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo and Ogbomoso, Oyo State. Four research instruments were used for data collection: Adolescents Home and School Adjustment Questionnaire (r=0.86), personality types Questionnaire (r=0.84), Adjustment to Hearing Loss Questionnaire (r=0.83) and Psychological Adjustment Inventory (r=0.68). Three research questions were answered and six hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Chi Square and Multiple Regression. Home environment (r=0.812, p< 0.05) and school environment (r=0.773, p< 0.05) were positively correlated with psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment. Home environment, school environment, age of onset and degree of hearing loss significantly predicted psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment (F(4,226) = 1014.54 p<0.05) and contributed 94.7% of the total variance to the dependent variable. However, age of onset and degree of hearing loss were not significantly correlated with psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment. Also, there were no significant associations among personality types, gender and psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment. The relative contributions of the independent variables to the psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment are as follows: home environment (β=0.624), school environment (β=0.570), age of onset (β=0.004), and degree of hearing loss (β=0.000) respectively. Home environment, school environment and personality types are important factors that enhanced psychological adjustment of adolescents with hearing impairment. Therefore, the government, parents and other stakeholders who are involved in the education of adolescents with hearing impairment should create an atmosphere that could enhance their psychological adjustment.
