I.Nigeria is a country united in diversity. It is composed of diverse ethnic nationalities all trying to assert their cultural identities. The social and political developments of recent years have succeeded in creating a big hiatus in the relationship among the various nationalities. This is manifested in the spates of altercations that have been witnessed among various ethnic groups in recent times. In the face of this dwindling unity, myriads of measures put in place by the government could not achieve much. The ignorance of another culture creates fear, distrust, animosity and a disconnection between cultures in today's society. As always, to be educated about a culture different from one's own is the key to combatting this ignorance, bridge the gap and erase the fear and disconnection in order to start the reconciliation process It is, therefore, believed that using the option of literature education could bridge cultural gaps among the ethnic groups and thereby reduce conflicts to its barest minimum Exposing students to literary works from different ethnic cultures has the ability to nurture respect, empathy and acceptance among all groups. The paper also highlights the implications of this for peace and security in NigeriaItem A comparative analysis of language preference of students in secondary schools in Oyo state: implication for curriculum implementation(Constellation Books, 2017) Fakeye, D.O; .Aiyede, E. I.; Fakeye B.Item Revamping Nigeria’s Economy Through The Teaching Of Literature-In English(EKSU Printing Press, 2017) Aiyede, E. I.; Olagunju, T. O.; Adeleye, I . A.Causes and effects of global economic recession have been discussed by scholars from different perspectives in recent times. It was observed that Economy in Africa has not been growing well compared to developed continents in the world due to problems of underdevelopment occasioned by bad governance, and wide-spread corruption. Nigeria economy at present is undergoing a severe experience of an economic recession. Since some of the factors undermining development in Africa are also responsible for economy that slid into recession, the focus of this paper is to identify and discuss factors that are responsible for economic recession in Nigeria and explain how it can be tackled through the teaching of Literature-in- English in secondary schools. The writers are of the opinion that the inculcation of desirable societal virtues such as patriotism, honesty, dignity of labour, self-sacrifice through compulsory teaching of Literature in English will be in line with the federal government change mantra and help in revamping the nation’s economy that slid into recessionItem Value education: essential tool for socio-political and economic development in Nigeria(Social Studies Association of Nigeria, 2017-04) Ajitoni, O. S.; Omoniyi, T. O.The neglect of ethical values, which should form the substratum of any good education, has led to ineffectual, decadent, and poor learning. The duty of every society is to pass on the values enshrined in its scriptures and philosophical texts to each generation, in order, that the spirit of its culture lives on. Findings showed that a society with no required values cannot witness peace, growth and development. What is obtainable in the Nigeria society today are flagrant abuse of office, high and low profile corruption, poor attitude to work, gross misconduct, flair for frivolity and materialism, dependency of the Judiciary, lack of trust and so on. It was discovered that in planning for good values and objectives, the teachers and students, leaders and followers will have to cooperate and work together as a team, an indivisible entity. The purpose of education is to strengthen character in the younger generation which would provide solution to the problems facing Nigeria as a nation. This can only be achieved when education is value-oriented. The paper, therefore, recommends the core values of democracy which promotes a secure physical, emotional and political locus within the society. There is a need for a widespread renewal of individual commitment to an active life of principle and societal values like truth, right action, love, peace and non violence means of getting things done. As well, there is a need for better preparation of teachers as values educators.Item Assessment of household awareness of, attitude to and practice of environmental sanitation exercise and waste disposal management in Oondo city, Ondo State(Department of Social Science Education, Faculty of Education, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria, 2018) Timilehin, O. Ibadan, 2020) Omoniyi, T. O.Item Adopting howard gardner’s multiple intelligence theory (MIT) into the 21st century social studies classroom(Social Studies Educationists Association of Nigeria, 2020-01) Omoniyi, T. O.; Omoyajowo, V. O.Social Studies came as a corrective study with staunch commitment of grooming and repositioning citizens to acquire required knowledge, skills, attitude and values necessary for active participation in societal activities. The purpose of the Social Studies curriculum is to allow students become smart thinkers who proffer plausible solution to personal, community and world problems. Traditional Social Studies classroom is identified with concepts and themes like multidisciplinary field, learner as empty slate (tabula rasa), teacher-centered approach, convergent learning and so on. With the introduction and adoption of Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory in the 21s1 century Social Studies classroom, the conventional means of teaching and learning will fizzle into oblivion. The resultant effect tends to be integrated approach of teaching-learning, learners as pathfinders, teachers as facilitators, and above all experiential learning. This study therefore advocates for modern Social Studies classroom which addresses core issues around human beings and places learners at the centre of all that transpires in classroom setting. Students should be shown the world, not just talk about it, but a restoration of joy of learning into the 21s' century Social Studies classroom where there is curriculum of role plays, simulations, and demonstrations that can bring alive social dynamics within the classroom. Modern Social Studies classroom should be entrusted in the hands of professionally trained Social Studies educationists.Item Parenting style and social media use as predictors of social studies students' value acquisition in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria(Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2020-06) Omoniyi, T. O.This study was carried out to examine parenting styles and social media use as predictors of Social Studies students' value acquisition. Five hundred students were randomly selected from 10 secondary schools (five private and five public schools). Three research instruments, namely; Scale of Parenting Style r= 0.78; Students' Social Media Use Questionnaire r-0.77; and Students' Value Acquisition Scale r=0.71 were used. Finding shows that authoritative parenting style has direct link with student's value acquisition while other variable may rely on some predictors to have direct links. All the five independent variables accounted for 15% joint contribution to students' value acquisition. The findings also revealed relative contribution of authoritative parenting style to students' value acquisition. It is recommended that authoritative parenting style should be employed in raising children to learn how to think and make responsible choices. There is the need to discourage negative use of social media by secondary school students both at home and in school.Item A contextual analysis of the emergence of social studies education and the advancement of cybercrime (yahoo- yahoo) in the Nigerian society(Social Studies Educationists Association of Nigeria, 2020-06) Omoniyi, T. With its advent, there has been positive internet revolution as well as many maladies and atrocity which threaten social order and tranquility enjoyed in the society. Nigeria is now known as hotspot for cybercrimes with new waves of engaging in criminalities. The focus of Social Studies discipline is to correct the abnormalities in the society as well as create a new reaction to the inadequacies of past practices with particular reference to inculcation of desirable norms, skills, knowledge, values and rights attitudes for sustenance of individual and societal growth But with the emergence of the discipline and its lofty objectives, the menace of cybercrime is still unmatched by every standard and measure. However, it is not peculiar to Nigeria alone in Africa or the world at large but its embrace is significantly greater than what anyone can ever imagine. The study carefully perused qualitatively literature in journals, textbooks, and oral interviews. The study therefore recommends that Social Studies as a school discipline on corrective journey must live up to expectations in terms of national orientations, incorporation of cybercrime concepts, themes and topics in creating teenagers and youths awareness of the nefarious act, advocating dignity of labour and de-emphasizing the get-rich-quick syndrome. It also advocate for strong measures, viable policies and programmes on poverty reduction and eradication mechanism which must be judiciously backed by actions and measure. The study finally reminded that unemployment has to be dealt with to get rid of this cybercrime.Item Environmental knowledge and attitude as catalysts to promoting environmental practices among senior secondary students in Ondo West Local Government Area, Nigeria(Jointly Published By Departments of Arts and Social Sciences Education, Early Childhood and Educational Foundations, and Science and Technology Education, University of Ibadan, 2020-06) Omoniyi, T. O.The study did an exploratory analysis of core transferable soft skills for employability in higher education programmes in Nigeria. Transferable soft skills for employability are of more importance in recent times. This is because the practical world requires both relevant knowledge and skills for human survival and productivity. Lots of rivalries abound due to the growing population of potential degree holders with the absence of consummate competencies in accordance with employment opportunities in the highly competitive labour market. This has caused unemployment on a huge scale and has further amounted to other rippling problems. Higher education is evolving and getting diversified but lacks the required competence of the 21st-century world of jobs which is necessary for employability and wealth creation. Several studies have affirmed that higher education in Nigeria has been fundamentally flawed with a wrong learning model. The need for core and transferable soft skills such as research and study skills, self-, time- and people-management, capacity building for managing interpersonal relationships, leading, and influencing others, Information and Communication Technology, financial literacy, and effective decision-making, is of paramount importance. It is a necessity required in higher education for the world of job survival. However, higher education is more vital than most people think because the more highly educated a country is, the more prosperous it becomes. The paper recommended the need for the curricular experience to accommodate the identified core transferable employability soft skills, as well as their application, in life situations.Item The Quest for Improved Learning Outcomes in Literature-in-English among Senior Secondary School Students in Ibadan, Nigeria: Teachers’ Instructional Organisation in Focus(2022) Aiyede, E. Consequent on these findings, it is recommended that teachers should attend professional development programmes such as seminars and workshops to improve their instruction organisation skill for improved learning outcomes of studentsItem University of ibadan students' coping strategies during the deployed emergency remote teaching (UI-ERT)(Department of Social Science Education, Faculty of Education, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria., 2022-04) Omoniyi, T. O.This study assessed University of Ibadan students' coping strategies during the deployed Emergency Remote Teaching (UI-ERT) as a response to the Covid_19 pandemic. It became necessary to salvage the crisis of physical distancing and learning losses as result of the virus. ERT abdication came with new innovations which students found difficult to cope until. One of the major effects of ERT is psychological cum emotional stress. The aim of the study was to assess students' coping strategies during the deployment of UI-ERT. Richard Lazarus Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping (TTSC) explained that stress ns a product of a transaction between person (including multiple systems, cognitive, physiological neurological) and his or her complex environment. The study adopted a mixed method research design. The population of the study comprised all undergraduate students of the institution. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 275 respondents while two self-designed instruments; SPUI-ERT (r=0.931) SCSDUI-ERT (r=0.939) were used in data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean, frequency count, standard deviation, and percentage as well as PPMC. Thematic analysis was also carried on the interview conducted. The result indicated that the UI students had a negative perception of Emergency Remote Teaching (UI-ERT). It also revealed that UI students employed different coping strategies during the deployment of UI-ERT. The study therefore recommended thorough sensitization and pre-training programmes before the redeployment of the platform in case of any eventuality in the future.
