O.; Oseghale, O.This paper sets out to examine the accessibility, retrieval and use a/Publications Ordinance (PO) materials in Nigerian university libraries using Kenneth Dike Library (KDL) as a case study. The survey research design was adopted and a structured questionnaire was distributed to 400 users comprising students, staff and external users The records of the use of PO materials between October 2009 and September 2010 were also perused Result shows that majority of users are aware of the availability and importance of Legal deposits collection in the library but have difficulty in retrieving the materials due to inability to have direct physical contact with the materials, The study therefore proffers that Nigerian university libraries should, as a matter of' urgency, organize PO collections and adopt a harmonized library management system in order to enhance users' access and retrieval of' the materialsItem Activities of the systems unit in brief(Ibadan University Press, Ibadan, 2018) Ojo, R. A.; Otulugbu, D.; Ilesanmi, T. C.; Agwu, P. U.; Alonge, A. J.Item The adoption and utilization of information and communication technology for the preservation and conservation of serial Publication in Lautech Medical Library and Lautech Teaching Hospital Library, Osogbo(2019) Adeoye, M. O.; Oladapo, Y. O.; Abimbola, M. O.; Tomomowo-Ayodele, S. O.The research was conducted to determine the adoption and utilization of ICT for Preservation and Conservation of serial publications in LAUTECH Medical Library and Lautech Teaching Hospital Library Osogbo. Four research questions were raised for this study. The research design used for this study is descriptive survey, the population of the study which constituted all library staff in these libraries were 35. Total population sampling method was employed in this study. The results were collated and analyzed using tables and percentages. It concludes that despite the low use of ICT for the serials functions, it has been shown to reduce the rigor in serials publication; ease of selection, acquisition and processing difficulties. Generally it has helped to reduce serials function and reduced the cost for acquiring serials. The work recommended that: university library funding bodies should provide adequate resources to libraries to enable them procure ICT facilities which have been proved to enhance serials accessibility; libraries which are .not using ICT facilities for serials functions should be encouraged to reposition their stand in order to provide the state of the art operations and services required by the present day serials users; and curriculum for library trainees should be expanded to accommodate the findings of this work.Item Adoption of Web 2,0 by Academic Libraries in Nigeria(2015-12) Obasola, O.; Mamudu, P.This study is an attempt to ascertain the extent to which academic libraries in Nigeria have adopted web 2.0 for library services. The researchers surveyed these libraries by visiting their websites and social media pages to determine the level of adoption and implementation of web 2.0 tools. The libraries were classified into 3 groups and the adoption of web 2.0 was tested across the groups using Analysis of Variance. Other data gathered were analyzed and presented using tables. The analysis indicates that the adoption of the web 2.0 tools in information services is still at the budding stage. Only a few of the libraries have a proper structure for the coordination and integration of these tools in the delivery of information services. A significant proportion of those in this category are private university libraries. The implementation of web 2.0 tools on the websites of the federal and state universities is not as advanced like those of their counterparts in the private universities. Beyond the hype, it is important for academic libraries to implement the emerging technology to maximize its benefits for teaching, learning and research, and also to promote the relevance of libraries in the changing information terrain.Item Alternative news and misinterpretations: fake news and its spread in Nigeria(Intech Open, London, 2020-11) Otulugbu, D.Down the ages and across cultures, information has occupied a very crucial space in the life of any society. Today, our world with the speed in technological advancements is characterised with easy access to the collecting, refining and distribution of information. This has left media houses especially the large ones with the burden of competing with alternative media, as media producers abuse the privilege in liberal democracies that is granted citizens as regards human rights and freedom, as the rate of disseminating false information continues to grow. This piece attempts at stating clearly information on fake news, misinformation and hate speeches as disseminated globally in the guise of media scientists, showing the means through which this end is met, especially with the easy that comes with the use of social media and in the end, showing the challenges and risks that are resultant effects of this acts.Item Appraising the level of competence, awareness and readiness of students in using ICT for learning in a distance learning environment(Credence Press Ltd, Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria, 2022) Mamudu, P. A.In Nigeria and some other countries of the world, improving students’ ICT competency and awareness has become a pedagogical issue. Accordingly, education on ICT competency and awareness is becoming popular in institutions of learning. However, determining a student’s ICT readiness, awareness and competency level is germane to the success of teaching and learning using ICT tools. Consequently, this study has developed tools for measuring the level of students’ ICT competency, awareness and readiness in learning. This research is necessary because using ICT for instruction has gained remarkable popularity in recent times. Nigeria is not left out in this euphoria of using ICT for instruction. The major focus of this paper is to investigate the level of awareness, readiness and competencies for the use of ICT for instruction by Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan distance learning students. Distance learning programmes and the use of ICT for its facilitation and enhancement is not a new phenomenon in Nigeria, hence the need to measure the level of compliance of students in order to aid the institution under study to make policies that would help in achieving the goals of using ICT for instruction and learning. A questionnaire was randomly distributed among the distance learning students of the faculty and results of the study revealed that majority of the respondents have little or no knowledge of application of ICT to learning. The study also revealed that a great percentage of students were not exposed to the usage of ICT and as such limited in its use in learning. It is recommended that the Curriculum should include the use of ICT as a course from the first year to the final year of study, the course content should include advance skills as from the second year; and it should be made compulsory to enhance the students’ ICT skills.Item Approaches to retrospective conversion of catalogue records of libraries(2001) Ola, C. This has brought about increasing ease in the search for and use of information in academic, social, political and other spheres of life. However, despite the increasing simplicity in the accessing of information, there are indications that some students do not fully utilize information sources. Thus, this study investigates the awareness and use of online information sources among university of Ibadan undergraduate students. Copies of questionnaires were administered on 300 students on purposive sampling basis. Findings show that 97.9% of the students were generally aware of online information sources but very few of the students were aware of the individual online sources that are made available in the university. In addition, very few of the students were satisfied with the available online information sources. This study suggests that university libraries should effectively create awareness about the various online resources that available for students’ usage. The findings of this study will be useful to academic institutions in the same terrain like the University of Ibadan. Also, librarians and academic scholars will find this study useful in the effective creation of awareness of online information sources among university students.Item Awareness of electronic resources databases and assessment of Information Technology (IT) facilities used by distance learners at the Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria(Nigerian Library Association, Benue State Chapter, 2016-12) Ilesanmi, T. N.There is a growing prevalence of online survey for academic research. This can be attributed to the great impact of online survey tools on the researchers’ ability to easily develop, disseminate instruments, assemble and analyze data. Though many researchers in the advanced world have become very prone to the use of online survey, their counterparts in the developing economy are still struggling in the adoption of this invaluable tool. This study examines the level of awareness, knowledge and use of online survey tools amongst academic researchers in Nigeria. Questionnaire instrument was used for data collection. The population used for the study consists of eighty academic researchers in higher institutions spread across various parts of Nigeria. The study found that although there is a high level of awareness and preference to online survey tools by Nigerian researchers, yet there is a very low level of knowledge and usage of online survey tools by Nigerian researchers. The reason being that the researchers lack the basic prerequisite skills needed for the processing and development of online survey, amongst other challenges. The study ascertained that Survey Monkey was the most popular and predominantly used survey tool by Nigerian researchers, followed by Survey PRO and Zoomrang. The study advocated for trainings and workshops on the use of the survey tools in higher institutions in Nigeria, which could be facilitated by the survey tools’ designers in collaboration with higher institutions in NigeriaItem Best practices in serials management: a Kenneth Dike Library model(2012) Adewumi, C. O. B.Serials are described as a group of important information resources which contain primary cutting edge information, especially in an academic library like the Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The various processes involved in the effective management of serials are highlighted in this paper. Automation of serials collection and electronic serials were discussed; serials workflow diagrams representing manual and automated serials management systems were also developed by the author.Item Beyond the glass ceiling: work/home conflict, networking and mentoring as determinants of females’ career path to academic leadership in Nigerian universities(2006) Oti, A.; Oyelude, A.Researchers have eulogized the fact that women have indeed broken the glass ceiling as far as being represented in ‘enclaves’ thought to be the exclusive preserve of men. These enclaves had hitherto included positions of leadership, politics, and boards, professions such as engineering, sciences, technology and indeed higher education. Many of the women who have broken the glass ceiling, have through ‘thick and thin’ gone a long way to prove their worth in managing positions such as that of Vice-chancellors, deputies, Deans in higher education, politics and so on, but researches have, found out that the ‘Top’ is still a ‘chilly climate’ for women who aspire to be leaders especially in the academic environment. Even though women are being represented, the numbers are not significant and this makes the academic environment a masculine one. Many researchers have considered the areas of gender differences as key factors responsible for the dearth of women in leadership. In spite of gender, many women have managed to break through the glass ceiling, and are faced with challenges and experiences different from those of male colleagues. The paper seeks to find out what is happening after the glass ceiling. For women who are already there, what are the influences of home & work, networking and mentoring to their career path to leadership? What are the consequences of the presence or absence of these variables? The research generated data through in depth interviews with 25 female lecturers from different faculties and on different professional career cadre. Strong mentoring of women by women and committed men, creation of informal networks, ability to cope with executive stress and supportive home fronts are some of the strategies suggested.
