Item Information sourcing in an automated Nigerian academic library(International Research and Development Institute, 2011) Oyelude, A. A.; Fabunmi, B. A.Information seeking is a fundamental human process closely related to learning and problem solving, thus the information sourcing characteristics of users of the Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan is examined with a view to evaluating their use of modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities provided. Use patterns, user satisfaction with the ICT facilities, and user preference of manual and electronic facilities provided are evaluated. Descriptive survey research to appraise the adequacy of modern ICT in the library was carried out. Questionnaire, interview and participatory observation methods were used. The results show that majority of the users (75%) prefer the new ICT facilities to the manual, even though they encounter difficulties in use. Lack of constant power supply, limited access to online resources, lack of adequate user and staff training and non-creation of awareness for the ICT facilities is identified as some of the problems. Recommendations are made for future improvement and continuous evaluation.Item Information sourcing in an automated academic library(Devon Science Company, 2010) Oyelude, A. A.; Fabunmi, B. A.Purpose - Information seeking is a fundamental human process closely related to learning and problem solving, thus the information sourcing characteristics of users of the Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan is examined with a view to evaluating their use of modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities provided. Use patterns, user satisfaction with the ICT facilities, and user preference of manual and electronic facilities provided are evaluated Methodology: Descriptive survey research to appraise the adequacy of modern ICT in the library was carried out. Questionnaire, interview and participatory observation methods were used Findings - The results show that majority of the users (81%) prefer the new ICT facilities to the manual, even though they encounter difficulties in use. Lack of constant power supply, limited access to online resources, lack of adequate user and staff training and non-creation of awareness for the ICT facilities is identified as some of the problems. The CD-ROM and the Internet are the most frequently consulted ICT facilities, while many called for enhancement and updating of the book/journal collection. Originality/value - The research brings to the fore types of ICT needed and sourced for by users, and the need for information providers and users to adapt to the changes. Challenges facing the library in information provision (IS well as the prospects are discussed, and recommendations made for future improvement and continuous evaluation.Item Use of digital signage in academic libraries in Nigeria(2013-06) Fabunmi, B. A.The application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in libraries has been expanding all over the world. All the functions and services that academic librarians used to provide manually are now being provided through the use of ICTs which can do things better and faster. Most modern day libraries are interested in the various infrastructure networks that serve as major channels for the transmission of information. ICTs include a variety of rapidly evolving technologies such as telephony, cable, satellite, television and radio, video conferencing, computers, information networks, and software applications. However, most of the libraries have not explored the use of digital signage for the dissemination of information to their patrons. As computer technology continues to evolve and the demand for hard copy materials reduces, the desire to visit academic library is on the decline. In order to make library more relevant in this era of ICT, digital signage, which is one of the telecommunication technologies can be used as a channel to provide information that will attract lecturers, students, researchers, and the academic community to the library. This paper highlighted the benefits that can be derived from the use of digital signage in improving the provision of library and information resources and services and also the challenges . It also advocated that digital signage should be introduced to the academic libraries , because of the benefits that can be derived from its usage.Item Challenges and prospects of virtual libraries in universities in Nigeria(EuroJournals Publishing, Inc., 2009-07) Fabunmi, B. A.The challenges and the prospects of virtual library in a university system constitute the focus of this paper. Most university libraries in Nigeria are in deplorable conditions due to inadequate funding. This manifests in libraries having few current books, journals, and other reading resources; staff shortages; deterioration of facilities; inadequate equipment and even library buildings. Such situations are not conducive environment for reading. The virtual library project has the capability of resolving this problem. In this period of information explosion, there is the need for university libraries in Nigeria to use appropriate technology to access the world information in order to enable Universities carry out their traditional functions of teaching, research and public service effectively and efficiently.Item Disaster control and planning in a universal library(Faculty of Education, Kampala International University College,Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, 2011-05) Fabunmi, B. A.University library is a type of academic library. They have long been repositories of knowledge and safe house for undisturbed study. While they are considered safe and quite places to conduct scholarly research, they are susceptible to hazards like any other organisation. Treasures in libraries may be destroyed by unforeseen hazards which may be either man-made or natural disasters such as acts of war and terrorism, fire and smoke, water damage from leaks or floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tornadoes, ice and snow, thunderstorms and power outages, etc. Disasters are unpredictable in their nature, occurrence and severity. Disaster planning is a basic security for library staff and collections. While library disasters cannot be prevented, their impact on library services might be minimized with a formal written plan which will enhance prompt response to the emergency. This study established that while disaster is an inevitable element in the library however, its impact on library holdings might be minimised through advance planning and preparedness. These are the keys to preventing or at least reducing the impacts of these potential hazards. As a result of the valuable resources in the libraries, it is essential to minimize disaster by planning against its occurrence. The study examines the types and causes of disaster in academic libraries, and presents guidelines for disaster planning. It was recommended that university libraries should renew their commitment to protecting the valuable collections in their custody through a functional disaster plan.
