Item Software selection and deployment for library cooperation and resource sharing among academic libraries in South-West Nigeria(2015-01) Iroaganachi, M. A.; Iwu, J. J.; Esse, U. C.This study assessed software selection and seployment sractices for library cooperation and resource sharing among aacademic libraries in South-West Nigeria. The purposive sampling technique was adopted and data collection instruments were questionnaire and interview. All of the 39 universities in the South- West zone were chosen and copies of questionnaire were administered to a representative of each academic library. 37 questionnaires were received. The descriptive statistical method of analysis was used. It was discovered that there is no form of cooperation and resource sharing among the academic libraries presently. The study recommends that National Universities Commission (NUC) should make automation a requirement for all academic libraries in Nigeria and recommend particular software(s) for cooperation and resource sharing to be possible among academic libraries among others.Item Trends in Hi-Tech Examination Malpractices: Lessons from Nigeria(2019-03) Ifijeh, G.; Asaolu, A.; Ilo, P.; Osinulu, I.; Osayande,O.; Michael-Onuoha, H.; Iroaganachi, M.; Nwokeoma, N.; Itsekor, V.; Ilogho, J.Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have revolutionized every sphere of human endeavor including education. However, the use of ICTs in Education is not without challenges. One of the major challenges of ICTs in education is examination malpractice. Educational assessment and evaluation are the means through which the attainment of educational objectives is validated. Examination malpractice is considered as a huge challenge to these processes. This paper focuses on the trends and threats of hi-tech examination malpractice in the Nigerian educational system. It discusses the factors that precipitate examination malpractices and implications on the attainment of educational objectives. The paper identified proliferation of mobile phones and other private digital assistants (PDAs) as a major driving factor for e-cheating. It further outlined corruption, poor funding, legal and moral issues as challenges militating against efforts to end the ugly trend. It concludes that the co-operation of Government, parents, school administrators, examination bodies and security agencies is required to chart a way forward.Item Impact of authentic leadership on employee well-being in commodity market: a case of Nigeria’s cocoa industry(Society for Science and Education, 2024-12) Tayo, A. M.; Olajide, O.; Kutu, J. O.This study aims to investigate the relationship between authentic leadership and employee well-being in the Nigerian cocoa sector, a key commodity market in the country. Authentic leadership is characterized by self-awareness, relational transparency, balanced processing, and internalized moral perspective, and has been linked to positive employee outcomes in various contexts. Using a case study approach, this research examined the experiences of employees in the Nigerian cocoa industry to understand how authentic leadership behaviours exhibited by employers and managers influence factors such as organizational commitment, work-life balance, and overall well-being. Data were collected through interviews of Nigeria cocoa sector employees to gain a holistic perspective. Findings revealed that the Nigerian cocoa sectors comply with minimum legal requirements but do not proactively go beyond those standards, and that they provide basic healthcare benefits and adhere to safety regulations but lack comprehensive well-being programs. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the scholarly literature on authentic leadership and its application in non-Western, developing economy settings. It will also provide practical insights for Nigerian cocoa organisations and policymakers on fostering leadership practices that promote leaders’ authenticity, employee thriving and sustainable business performance. The results may have broader implications for leadership development and human resource management strategies in Nigeria's vital commodity markets.Item Investigating learning skills and use of digital resources by undergraduates in Nigerian universities: a content analysis approach(Department of School Library and Media, Technology, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, 2023) Otulugbu, D.This abstract will discuss the learning skills required for the effective use of digital information materials by undergraduate students. In the digital age, students must have the necessary skills to navigate and retrieve information from a wide range of online resources. The purpose of this research is to identify the specific skills that undergraduate students need to develop to effectively utilize digital information materials. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, including a survey and focus group discussions. The sample consisted of 200 undergraduate students from different disciplines. The findings indicate that students need a range of skills, including information literacy skills, critical thinking skills, technical skills, and digital communication skills. Information literacy skills are crucial for students to be able to locate and evaluate the relevance and credibility of information sources. Critical thinking skills are necessary to analyse and synthesize information from different sources and apply it to specific contexts. Technical skills are essential for students to be able to use the available digital tools and resources effectively. Finally, digital communication skills are necessary for students to communicate their research findings effectively. Based on the findings, it is recommended that institutions of higher learning should develop programs that focus on the development of these skills. These programs should be integrated into the curriculum to ensure that all students have the necessary skills to navigate the digital landscape effectively. Additionally, librarians and academic staff should collaborate to provide support for students in the use of digital information materials. In conclusion, this research highlights the importance of developing the necessary learning skills for the effective use of digital information materials by undergraduate students. With the increasing availability and complexity of digital resources, students must develop the necessary skills to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits.Item Library consortium: IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria experience(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2012) Ilesanmi, T. C.Purpose – This paper aims to describe the library consortium experienced at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. Activities involved improving researchers’ timely access to resources for research for development. Design/methodology/approach – The approach taken was a librarian interview and observation of library records. Findings – The consortium involves agricultural libraries in both developing and developed countries. Using the library software Inmagic database enhances the web-based centralized online public access catalogue of all the participating institutions, the CGV Library. This enabled access to their comprehensive collections, promoting better library services to agricultural researchers. Hence, it bridges the digital gap between developing and developed countries. They are involved in joint acquisition of electronic journals and timely response to sharing their independent collections through electronic document delivery services. Practical implications – The paper recommends that Nigerian libraries, especially agricultural research institutes, could emulate the IITA library consortium. Originality/value – The paper provides recommendations to libraries wishing to form consortia in Nigeria and notes the positive impacts that this would have on national development.Item Digitization of journal collections in libraries: a case study of Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Nigeria(Taylor & Francis, 2013) Ilesanmi, T. C.Digitization of journal collections in libraries is inevitable with the advent of Information Communication Technology (ICT). There is a need to digitize journals in the academic library in order to preserve and to give wider visibility and accessibility to information resources for teaching, learning, and research. This article describes the processes of journal collection digitization in Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan. Underfunding and copyright clearance are the challenges encountered, among others. The study recommends adequate funding and concludes that the benefit of instant access to digital information is the most distinguishing attribute in this present information age.Item Copyright information resource management in Nigeria: and the way forward(Science Publishing Group, 2020-12) Okoroma, F. N.The enrichment of the national cultural heritage is directly linked to the level of protection given to literary and artistic works. The higher the level of protection, the greater the number of each country’s intellectual output. This calls for an effective copyright information resource management in every nation and organization to optimize access to relevant information on copyright in order to curb the rate of infringement. This paper seeks to address the copyright information resource management in Nigeria, and the way forward. Questionnaire instrument was used for data collection. The last two questions on the questionnaire were open-ended questions, designed to enable the respondents freely express their views and suggestions. The findings identified the benefits of copyright information resource management, both to the authors and the users; include the inhibition of infringement as it delivers quick access to copyright related information in a dynamic and effective way. This is due to the fact that many acts of infringement on copyright are as a result of ignorance on the part of users. The findings further highlighted that copyright information resource management facilitation is dependent on putting the right people in positions of authority, setting up committee in each institution to monitor and establish standards in order to ensure quality assurance in the system, and keeping tracks of publications of each university’s scholarItem The influence of cyberloafing on library and information studies students at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria(Scienceweb Publishing, 2018-07) Okoroma, F. N.; Okafor, I. A.The internet plays a vital role in the teaching and learning processes. However, the uncontrolled excessive use of these technologies by students results to several problems such as cyber loafing. This work examines the influence of cyber loafing on teaching and learning processes of students of Library and Information Studies (LIS) at the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research as the method. The questionnaire instrument was used for data collection. 100 copies of questionnaire were distributed to the librarians in training at the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of Ibadan. 99 copies were filled and returned, given a response rate of 99%. Data generated were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that majority of the students engage in cyberloafing and they spend an average of 5½ hours each day in cyberloafing. Whatsapp and Facebook were the major platforms that the students use to engage in cyberloafing. The students were not satisfied with their academic performance, due to the fact that cyberloafing makes them to procrastinate in their studies.Item Issues and the use of social media in reference services by academic library personnel in Nigeria(Society for Science and Education, United Kingdom, 2017) Okoroma, F. N.Social Media platforms have revolutionized the patterns libraries serve their clientele as well as augment reference services delivery. This study seeks to address the issues militating against the integration of social media in reference services and the level of use by academic library personnel in Nigeria. Questionnaire instrument was used for data collection. 100 copies of questionnaire were distributed to the librarians and other library personnel at the national seminar in 2015 held at Kogi State University, Nigeria. 62 copies were filled and returned, given a response rate of 62%. The study found that academic libraries’ personnel in Nigeria have embraced the regular use of social media, but their application of these media in reference services is quite low. The issues contending with the integration of social media in reference services by academic library personnel in Nigeria include lack of awareness and training on the application of social media to reference services, coupled with infrastructural and technological problems. N.The internet is the most compelling capacity building tool, as it exposes various forms of human knowledge. This has resulted into an overwhelming use of the search engines by digital generation in their social, education and research activities. Surprisingly, only a very little fraction of libraries’ digital collections are available on search engine results. Linked Data (LD) is an emerging set of standards and technologies that can potentially enable information systems such as libraries to publish their highly treasured wealth of knowledge, and interlink their hidden data on the web for better global accessibility. Linked Data having been presented as the future for library and information data management has triggered many institutions to experiment with it, and to learn more about the technology. Although technical challenges are paramount obstacles to the spread of LD across libraries, but the biggest issue can be attributed to lack of awareness on its potentials. This research focused on investigating the level of awareness, knowledge and perception of linked data by library and information science (LIS) professionals in Nigeria. The study made use of Survey research design, consisting of structured and open ended questions, distributed to LIS professionals in Nigeria. A total of 71 LIS professionals that spread across 17 institutions in Nigeria formed the participants for the study. The study portrays that LIS professionals in Nigeria perceive LD technology as a welcome innovative idea to facilitate records accessibility, and further move librarianship in Nigeria to the global best practices. But there is a drastic low level of knowledge on the subject of LD amongst the professionals, which is an impediment to the speedy implementation. To this effect, every institution in Nigeria needs to escalate discussions and trainings on the subject of Linked Data in order to foster the development of this powerful tool in shaping libraries collections’ management
