    Investigating learning skills and use of digital resources by undergraduates in Nigerian universities: a content analysis approach

    This abstract will discuss the learning skills required for the effective use of digital information materials by undergraduate students. In the digital age, students must have the necessary skills to navigate and retrieve information from a wide range of online resources. The purpose of this research is to identify the specific skills that undergraduate students need to develop to effectively utilize digital information materials. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, including a survey and focus group discussions. The sample consisted of 200 undergraduate students from different disciplines. The findings indicate that students need a range of skills, including information literacy skills, critical thinking skills, technical skills, and digital communication skills. Information literacy skills are crucial for students to be able to locate and evaluate the relevance and credibility of information sources. Critical thinking skills are necessary to analyse and synthesize information from different sources and apply it to specific contexts. Technical skills are essential for students to be able to use the available digital tools and resources effectively. Finally, digital communication skills are necessary for students to communicate their research findings effectively. Based on the findings, it is recommended that institutions of higher learning should develop programs that focus on the development of these skills. These programs should be integrated into the curriculum to ensure that all students have the necessary skills to navigate the digital landscape effectively. Additionally, librarians and academic staff should collaborate to provide support for students in the use of digital information materials. In conclusion, this research highlights the importance of developing the necessary learning skills for the effective use of digital information materials by undergraduate students. With the increasing availability and complexity of digital resources, students must develop the necessary skills to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits.

    The impact of social media on library and information studies students at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria

    The significance of social media in the teaching and learning process cannot be overemphasized. However the excessive use of the same can result into inefficiency and poor academic performance. The study examines the impact of social media (SM) on Library and Information Studies students at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. Questionnaire was used for data collection. 100 copies of questionnaire were distributed to the librarians in training at the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of Ibadan. 99 copies were filled and returned, given a response rate of 99%. Data generated were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that Whatsapp was the most preferred social media platform used more frequently by the LIS undergraduates. Majority of the students make use of SM more for other activities than academics, they spend 7 hours each day on the SM on general activities other than course work as against 5 hours spent each day for course work on the media, and as a result this undoubtedly affects their performance

    The influence of cyberloafing on library and information studies students at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria

    The internet plays a vital role in the teaching and learning processes. However, the uncontrolled excessive use of these technologies by students results to several problems such as cyber loafing. This work examines the influence of cyber loafing on teaching and learning processes of students of Library and Information Studies (LIS) at the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research as the method. The questionnaire instrument was used for data collection. 100 copies of questionnaire were distributed to the librarians in training at the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of Ibadan. 99 copies were filled and returned, given a response rate of 99%. Data generated were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that majority of the students engage in cyberloafing and they spend an average of 5½ hours each day in cyberloafing. Whatsapp and Facebook were the major platforms that the students use to engage in cyberloafing. The students were not satisfied with their academic performance, due to the fact that cyberloafing makes them to procrastinate in their studies.

    Effects of cognitive ability, accessibility and utilisation of library information resources on administrative effectiveness of senior officers in local government areas in Ibadan metropolis

    The main objective of the study is to investigate the effects of cognitive ability, accessibility and utilisation of library information resources on administrative effectiveness of senior officers in local governments in Ibadan metropolis. Total enumeration was used for the study because of the small size of the population of the senior officers in eleven local government areas in Ibadan metropolis. A total sample size of 234 was used. The questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analysed using frequency distribution and regression analysis run on Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS).The findings revealed that respondents generally have access to information resources.Larger proportion of the senior officers 161(73.2%) affirmed that local government authority organised training programme for effective administration. The most potent factors was types of information utilized (a = .484, p<0.05) followed by accessibility to information (a = 0.302, p<05), cognitive ability of Senior Officer ((a = 0.19, p < 0.05) and sources of information utilization (a= 0.086, p < 0.05). Correlation between administrative effectiveness of senior officers is also significant (r = 0.52, p < 0.05) while limited number of computers 115(52.3%), poor power supply 125(56.8%), unavailability of resource 136(61.8%) and lack of funds 102(46.4%>) were the major problems hindering administrative effectiveness.The study concluded that library and information professionals should know more about how senior officers in local government make use of information resources for effective administration and to guide the provision of information services in local governments.

    Demographic characteristics and accessibility as determinants of use of library resources by students in two Federal Colleges of Agriculture in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria

    The paper examined demographic factors and accessibility as determinants of use of library resources by students of Federal College of Animal Health Production and Federal College of Agriculture and Technology, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design with the aid of questionnaire was employed to elicit response from the respondents. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample size of this work. Data was analysed with the use of descriptive statistics facilitated by the Statistical Software for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results were presented in frequencies, percentages, correlation and multiple regressions on tables. From the findings, library resources that were very readily available were indicated. The prominent challenges affecting the use of library resources as indicated by most of the respondents were highlighted. Recommendations were also made based on the findings.

    Use of ICT for securing libraries and information resources against vandalism in university libraries in the era of global insecurity

    Vandalism of library and information resources is an international problem as well as a historical one that affects all type of libraries. Therefore, the use of ICT for securing libraries and information resources is inevitable. ICT is the only means of securing library resources in the era of global insecurity. Security of libraries and information resources becomes a concern for the modem well equipped libraries. The application of ICT in the library will help in providing quality services by the librarians through the Internet to users as information will be processed and communicated to users to meet their information needs without delay. The methods for securing libraries and information resources against vandalism in the era of global insecurity are through digitization of information resources, electromagnetic and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), video surveillance and closed- circuit television (CCTV) systems in the library as means to deter crime and ensure safety of information resources in the library. Meanwhile, Lack of fund, poor policies and procedures, natural disasters such as earthquake, flood, fire, storm among others serve are causes of vandalism of library materials. It was therefore, recommended that government should assist the University in providing sufficient funds to install modem security systems to prevent vandalism in the library.

    Library information resources in the era of global insecurity

    Securing library information resources and facilities in the era of global insecurity is germane in building confidence and a sense of security among stakeholders and prevent theft by unscrupulous and criminally minded individuals. As a result of this, the paper explores the concept of information resources, discusses the broad categorization of information resources as well as explain the features, approaches and strategies for securing library information resources. The paper identifies the challenges confronting the use of electronic security systems in libraries in Nigeria to include inadequate funding of library, power failure, hardware and software failure, inadequate skilled manpower among others. It is recommended that consistent disbursement of funds for library projects, promotion of library education among librarians and other para-professionals, constant power supply to the library as well as training of IT professionals in core areas of library management to provide tailor-made technological supports for optimal operations of the library services would help to effectively manage library information resources in the era of global insecurity.

    An evaluation of library resources, services and use of Kogi state university, Ayigba, library

    This research evaluated the library resources, service and use of Kogi State University Library. Ayigba. The main objective of the research is to find out the varieties of learning resources available: services rendered: and how effectively they are being utilized by the students and staff The survey research design was adopted with the questionnaire serving as the main instrument for data collection. A total of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents were randomly selected from the students and staff but ninety-five of them responded. Descriptive statistical methods were used in analyzing the data generated. The finding identifies some of the problems of academic libraries to include outdated books, inadequate space, noisy environment, and lack of automation of libraries resources. Also the libraries were not adequately staffed.
