Item Psychological factors as determinants of use and adjustment to assistive technology by students with hearing impairment in tertiary institutions in Oyo State, Nigeria(Department of Special Education, University of Ibadan, 2015-07) Osisanya, A.; Odili, J. N.Students with hearing impairment find it difficult to use and adjust to assistive technologies due to some psychological factors. This in turn tends to have great influence on their academic performance and psycho-social interactions with people around them. Consequently, this study, therefore, investigated some psychological factors as determinants of the use and adjustment to assistive technology by students with hearing impairment in tertiary institutions in Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study, as purposive sampling technique was used to select the sixty respondents from two tertiary institutions in Oyo state. This study raised and answered three research questions tested at 0.05 level of significance. Multiple regression and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) were used as statistical methods of data analysis. The findings of this study revealed a significant relationship among the psychological factors: personality (r-0.402, P<0.05); self-esteem (r=0.309, P<0.05); and locus of control (r=0.800, P<0.05) on the use and adjustment to assistive technologies by students with hearing impairment in tertiary institutions. The study also established joint influence of the independent variables on the dependent variables (F=34.662, P<0.05). The results yielded a coefficient of multiple regression which implies that the three independent variables jointly accounted for the use and adjustment to assistive technology by students with hearing impairment. Personality factor (β=0.707, t-5.173, P<0.05); self-esteem (β=0.664, t=2.310, P<0.05); and locus of control (β=0.751, t=8.502, P<0.05) had relative influence on the use and adjustment to assistive technology by students with hearing impairment. Assistive technologies are effective in boosting the performance of students with hearing impairment in tertiary institutions. Therefore, the psychological factors of students with hearing impairment should be enhanced before introducing assistive technology. Students should be taught how to develop the right attitude towards the use of assistive technologies.Item Influence of early intervention programmes on the language development of pupils with hearing impairment in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria(National Council for Exceptional Children, 2014-07) Osisanya, A.; Ahmodu, M. A.Hearing impairment is a condition that mostly leads to poor language development, and thereby affects the academic performance of people with the disorder. Due to this developmental lags, this study investigated the influence of early intervention programmes on the language development of children with hearing impairment in Ilorin, Kwara State. A correlational research design was adopted for the study. 100 purposively- selected pupils with hearing impairment from three special primary schools formed the participants for the study, and were distributed into three groups of early identified, early identified and enrolled, and the later identified. Three instruments- Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT)(r=0.85), to test for vocabulary skill, Pre-Language Scale Instrument (r=0.78), to test for verbal reasoning skills, and Family Involvement Rating Scale (r= 0.89), to test for the participation of parents of pupils with hearing impairment in parenting were used to answer the three research questions and test the three research hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance generated for the study. The data collected were analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, Percentage, Frequency counts and Multiple Regression Analysis. A significant relationship was found among the early intervention programmes (age of identification, age of enrolment and parental involvement) on the language development of pupils with hearing impairment (F(84.439)=218,P>0.05), and each of the early intervention programmes (age of identification (F(527)=195.P>0.05), age of enrolment (F(833)=195,p>0.05) and parental involvement (F(.210)=.195,P>0.05) had significant relationship with the language development of pupils with hearing impairment. Therefore, administrators should make the provision of hearing screening result a prerequisite for admitting pupils into the school for better placement.Item Occupational exposure to noise and patterns of hearing threshold among factory workers in Ibadan Nigeria(ORIC Publications, 2014) Osisanya, A.; Oyewumi, A.; Sunmonu, M.This study examined occupational exposure to noise and patterns of hearing loss among industrial workers in Ibadan, Nigeria. The study adopted an ex-post facto research design; sampling 100 participants comprising of industrial workers and sawmillers, who were assessed by means of Pure Tone Audiometry, the sound level of the factories were measured with sound level meter. Frequency count, percentage, mean, standard deviation and pearson product moment correlation were employed to answer the four research questions raised. The sound assessment revealed that the sound level in the industrial plant is higher than that of the sawmill, .and the notched pattern of hearing threshold predominated the hearing among the respondents on the left and right ears. There was positive significant relationship between age, work experience and bilateral hearing loss. Based on these findings, it was recommended that the altering of design and technology of mechanical equipments resulting in low noise emission should be put in place in factories, and that receptors of sound should be protected adequately from industrial noise.Item Psychosocial influence of hearing impairment on the interpersonal behavior of youths with hearing impairment in Oyo State, Nigeria(2013) Osisanya, A.; Adeniyi, S. O.; Udoh, G. G.Individuals with hearing impairment are confronted with a lot of problems due to the condition of their disability. This has a negative impact on their social and psychological well-being with multiplying effect on their interpersonal relationship. Therefore, this study investigated the psycho-social influence of hearing impairment on interpersonal behavior of youths with hearing loss. Methodology The study adopted a survey research design. A sample consisting of 211 participants with hearing loss were purposively selected from the Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo, Nigeria. A questionnaire, part of Psycho-social Competence Scale (PCS), was used for data collection with reliability coefficient of 0.72. Results The findings revealed that hearing impairment affects social interaction of youths with hearing impairment, hearing loss affects emotional well-being of youths with hearing impairment and youths with hearing impairment feel inferior in company of persons without hearing impairment. Based on this, it was recommended that a friendly home environment should be made and youths with hearing impairment should be advised to accept their loss and take it as a challenge that can be used to achieve a better end and the society should have right attitude and beliefs toward youths with hearing impairment.
