Item Millennium development goals and Inclusive education for gifted and talented children in Nigeria(National Council of the Exceptional Children (NCEC), 2014) Adelodun, G. A.In this paper, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been conceived as the eight international goals that were officially established by the entire 193 United Nations member States together with at least 23 international organizatìons which they jointly agreed to achieve by the year 2015. Similarly in this paper, coping with challenges involved in inclusive education for gifted and talented children in Nigeria was extensively discussed. This becomes necessary because the curriculum of teacher education in inclusive setting in Nigeria is geared towards meeting the needs of average students who do not require special education intervention. Ironically however, the regular classroom in inclusive education is not made up of average students alone. Both the rapid learners as well as gifted/talented students and the slow learners form part of the class. It is therefore the concern of this paper to discuss nurturant and coping skills that could be used by the teacher to meet the challenges posed by the presence of gifted students in inclusive education settings. Furthermore, in this paper, the relationship between Millennium Development Goals and Gifted and Talented children in Nigeria has been linked to the fact that the two aim at developing every nation both economically and technologically. In conclusion, the relationship between the two could further be traced to the recommendations made by United Nations Enable (2013) on disability and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).Item Examining the success of millennium development goals (MDGs) in the improvement of quality of life of persons with special needs in Nigeria(Journal of the Department of Special Education, University of Ibadan, 2014) Isaiah, O. O.; Popoola, O.The neglect of persons with special needs in the provision of essential services that could improve their quality of life is worrisome. It is expected that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will improve the quality of life of persons with special needs in Nigeria. Unfortunately, most of the programmes that are meant to alleviate the suffering of the citizens do not include those with special needs (persons with hearing impairment, visual impairment, intellectual disability and those with other forms of disabilities). If nothing is done to include persons with special needs in the MDGs programmes, they will lose their sense of belonging and find it difficult to have full participation in the activities of the society, and may not have equitable access to social services. It is in the light of this that this paper examined the MDGs, persons with special needs and their quality of life, as well as, MDGs and Nigerians with special needs. Recommendations were made based on the observations made by the authors.
