The findings revealed that the Computer experience of the undergraduates correlate positively with their attitude towards the use of computer(r=0.35;p<0.01).It was also revealed that a positive relationship exists between Computer self-efficacy and attitude of students toward the use of computer(r=0.39;p<0.01).The two Computer - related variables were also found to have significant composite effect on attitude of the part-time students toward the use of Computer(R=0.509;p<0.01). The study recommends the integration of Computer courses into the curriculum at all levels of education (primary, secondary and tertiary). It also recommends provision of Computer laboratories equipped with internet facilities in the library and the faculties for students’ use.Item Demographic variables as predictors of library personnel’s perception of preservation of information resources in Nigerian federal university libraries(2009-12) Popoola, S. O.; Akande, S. O.The study examined the extent to which the demographic variables of library personneI in Nigerian federal university libraries predict their perception about preservation of information resources. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample white questionnaire method was used to collect data. 660 copies of the questionnaire were administered to the library personnel in Nigerian federal university libraries out of which the 510 which were returned well filled were analysed. The reliability coefficient (r) of the questionnaire used for data collection was 0.69 obtained using Cronbach - alpha method. The study revealed that a significant relationship exists between age and perception of library personnel about preservation of information resources (r =0.16, p<0.01). The demographic variables (gender, age, section of work, length of Service, education and designation) was also found to jointly influence the perception of the library personnel and these accounted for 5.7% (R2 =0.057) of the total variance in perception of the library personnel about preservation of information resources. However, only three demographic variables viz age (B=6.690; p<0.05), designation (B=-0.104; p<0.05) and Service (B=-8.458: p<0.05) could predicf library personnel’s perception of preservation of information resources. Suggestions were offered on how to make training and education improve perception ofthe library personnel about preservation of information resources.Item Developing children and youth reading culture for national development: the role of library services and access to education(2017-12) Akande, S. O.; Oyedapo, R. O.In recent times, lack of cultivating the habit of reading has been the concern of all stakeholders. The lack of enthusiasm of secondary school students for reading has contributed to many failures such as poor writing and limited understanding about what they are taught in class. This growing concern provides motivation for this study. Thus, this study seeks to discover and elucidate the various ways whereby secondary school students in Nigeria could develop the habits of reading amidst divergent distractions around them especially in the 21st Century society as well as the roles of stakeholders towards enhancing the reading habits of students at the secondary school. The study concluded that the reading habits of secondary school students should be given rapt attention because of the imminent danger of losing reading habits in the era of Information and communication technologies, where the use of social media sites is the Order of the day. The study recommends that there must be a fixed time for reading a variety of reading materials that will appeal to students and that adopting different methods to arouse the interest of students could enhance their reading habits.Item Effect of cd-rom on information accessibility and retrieval at University of Ibadan library(1999) Akande, S. O.; Ajala, E. B.The University of Ibadan Library had experienced persistent short age of periodicals books and other techicaliterature. This is the same experience that libraries all over Nigeria is currently undergoing. The introduction of CD-ROM in this libraries has being a relief to this problem. There is an increased awareness and improved patronage of this technology among different categories of researchers including students in the library over the years. Though level of Computer literacy of users is still very low nevertheless CD-ROM has provided more access to Information and retrieval. This is however in the face of some constraints such as inadequate infractures, unreliable but pertinent electricity supply etc. Solution to these constraints are suggested.Item Effect of cd-rom on information accessibility and retrieval at University of Ibadan library(1999) Akande, S. O.The study investigated the gender differences in information retrieval skills and use of electronic resources based on a sample of 175 information Professionals surveyed in academic libraries in South - Western Nigeria, The sample was selected from a population of 250 information Professionals using a simple random sampling technique. Data for the study were collected by using structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts, simple percentages and inferential statistics of t-test and correlation analysis were used for data analysis. The findings did not reveal that gender differences exist between male and female information Professionals on the basis of acquisition of information retrieval skills. Similarly, there was no statistically significant difference in respondents’ _se of electronic resources. However, the study showed that male Professionals revealed a slightly higher mean score on their use of electronic resources. The paper discussed implications of these results on staff's development and capacity building in library and information centres with respect to ICT skills acquisition especially in a gender -sensitive environment.Item ICT skills of library personnel in a changing digital library environment: a study of academic libraries in Oyo state, Nigeria(2014-06) Akande, S. O.The survey examined ICT skills of library personnel working in academic libraries in Oyo state vis a- vis level of competence and methods of acquisition. It also considered whether the personnel's ICT skills competence is related to their method of ICT skills acquisition. The sample used consists of 155 professional and para-professional library personnel working in government owned tertiary institutions in Oyo state. A questionnaire tagged ICTSQ with a Cronbach alpha measure of 0.91 was used to collect data. Two research questions were raised and one hypothesis was formulated for the study. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts. percentages, mean scores and Standard deviation. Inferential statistics of Pearson correlation was used to analyse data for the hypothesis. The result showed that library personnel have acquired basic ICT skills for using the Internet. Computer and e mail, however, they lacked skills for using advanced web- based ICT packages for web page design. troubleshooting and project management. Moreover, there was no significant relationship found between the ICT skills level and methods of ICT skills acquisition(r= 165. P >0.05). O.; Akande, S. O.This Study is conducted under a survey design. It attempts to identify the information needs and seeking behaviour of chemists in Universities of Ibadan and llorin. Descriptive research case study method was used to carry out the study. Data were collected by questionnaire administered to lecturers who were eligible to fill it in the departments of chemistry, biochemistry, geology, and pharmacy, or universities of Ibadan and llorin. In the two universities, the departmental lists of staff observed in the various departments concerned revealed that only 60 lecturers were qualified to be used in the research work. Out of the 60 questionnaires self-administered, 48 were well filed and returned. This represents 80% of the questionnaire given out. The findings of the research work showed that chemists need current research information. They prefer documented sources of information to non-documented sources. They were library literate making an extensive use of bibliographic tools in search of information. Chemists were not satisfied with the library resources and Services. Suggestions were made on how chemists can get the information they need on their own without solely depending on the library and the staff which they considered inefficient.Item Internet security awareness and misuse of social networks of university students(2016) Akande, S. O.The use of the Internet and social networking sites profitably to seek for information, for communication, social interaction and for learning and research purposes have been globally applauded by the society including the undergraduates. However, some undergraduates are not adequately informed about online safety measures they could adopt to prevent falling victims to online risks and anti- social behaviour. This study therefore attempts to investigate the level of students ’ awareness in security on the Internet and their level of involvement in online negative activities like bullying, fraud, impersonation and theft of information. The study adopted descriptive research design of the survey type. The sample size for the study was 300 undergraduates randomly selected from six departments in faculties of Education, Arts, and Science, University of Ibadan. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data collected were analysed using frequency counts, mean scores and Standard deviation. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to analyse data gathered on the research hypothesis. Findings of the study revealed that the students have high level of internet security awareness and low level of participation in online negative social activities. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the University management through the University library and departments should ensure that their campaign on ethical use of the internet and social media continue by organizing more trainings, seminars and workshops to sustain the enlightenment of the students on profitable use of the media.Item Library - use skills of new undergraduates and library orientation programme at University of Ibadan(2002) Akande, S. O.Survey data were used to investigate the Library - use skills possessed by the new under- graduates of University of Ibadan before they gained admission into the institution. Five hundred copies of the questionnaire were administered to the newly set of students admit- ted for the 2000/2001 academic session. Analysis shows that most students lacked the basic library skills of catalogue use, locating Information by the aid of Classification number, and the use of Computer to acess information. The timing, the duration and the content of the library Orientation Programme are not well planned to make the Programme beneficiary to the students. The paper recommends aggressive instruction on library use that will be practical oriented to help the students acquire the lacked skills. More time should be given to the programme and it should be conducted at a period when most students would have completed their registration.
