    (2018-06) Odelola, J. O.
The study investigated capacity- building and material resources as determinants of practitioners' effectiveness in delivering health education for poverty> alleviation and sustainable development in Oyo state rural communities. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study sampled 244 community health practitioners from fifteen local government areas of Oyo State in South Western Nigeria. Data were collected through questionnaire. Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The finding showed a significant joint effect of variables of capacity building (collaborative learning, knowledge management and technological support) and material resources equipment, facilities and fund) on practitioners' effectiveness in delivering health education (F(6.237= 17.732; P<0.05). It was concluded that effectiveness of community health practitioners in delivering health education is a function of technical exposure, motivation and provision of necessary materials. It was recommended that community health practitioners should be equipped with knowledge and skills through regular attendance of conferences, symposia, and seminars. Also, they should be given necessary motivation and materials with which to be effective in delivering health education.

Strengthening health education component of health care delivery system for the achievement of health for all Nigerians
    (2015) Odelola, J. O.
Globally, a vast number of people are dying of preventable and curable diseases. In developing countries, levels of morbidity and mortality remain high as a result of malnutrition, infections and multiple pregnancies against the background of generally poor health knowledge. In May 1977, the 30th World Health Assembly met in Alma-Ata USSR and deliberated on the health problems of the world, especially that of developing countries where the focus of health system was on curative than preventive. It was resolved that, the main social target by the end of 20th century should be "Health for All" by the year 2000, using Primary Health Care approach for its achievement. The Alma-Ata conference directed governments of all nations to formulate national policies to sustain Primary Health Care as part of National Health System. Therefore, Nigerian Government committed huge human and material resources to the achievement of Health For All [HFA] but today not all Nigerians can be said to be healthy. Therefore, certain constraints that are responsible for the failure to achieve Health For All must be realistically tackled in an effort to improve the country’s Health System for the achievement of the set goal. This paper examined health status of Nigerian population, health care delivery system, measures for strengthening health education and strategics for effective delivery of health education. It was recommended that, preventive measure aspect of the nation’s health system in which health education will feature prominently should be emphasised.

Three research questions and one null hypothesis guided the study. The population for the study was 12,783 teachers in 1,208 governments owned primary schools in the 17 local government areas of Enugu State. A total of640primary school teachers were sampled using multi - stage sampling procedure. A 15-item 4-point scale questionnaire known as School -Based Oral Health Education Questionnaire (SBOHEQ) which was developed by the researcher was used to collect data from the respondents. The instrument was validated by three experts and Cronbach Alpha was used to ascertain the internal consistency of the instrument which yielded an index ofO .81. Mean was used to answer the research questions while the null hypothesis was tested using Z-test at P<.05. The findings revealed that the status of existence of oral health education methods, utilization of oral health education strategies and provision of oral health education materials in primary schools in Enugu State were low, and that it was not dependent on location. Based on the foregoing, a number of recommendations aimed at improving the status of school -based oral health education (SBOHE) in primary schools in Enugu State were put forward, which include that Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ESUBEB) should organize periodic workshops and seminars for teachers under their employ.
