Item Adoption of koha software in universities in South-west, Nigeria(Tai Solarin University of Education Press, Ijebu-Ode, 2016) Adetimirin, A.This article investigated the reasons for the adoption, purpose, functional modules and challenges of KOHA software in some universities in South-west Nigeria. Six universities were selected based on ownership (federal, state and private) and librarians in charge of the software were interviewed. Results revealed that KOHA was adopted because it was free and easy to use and the purpose was to improve service delivery to users. The cataloguing module was found to be the common module in the universities and the major challenges to its use were irregular power supply and inadequate technical support. For maximum benefit of using KOHA software in these libraries, alternative power supply and training for the librarians must be strongly considered.Item E-readiness and technology use in teaching by library and information science lecturers in Nigeria(University Press PLC, Ibadan, 2016-05) Adetimirin, A.The current trend globally in higher education institutions is student-centred learning which can be facilitated through the use of technology’ for teaching and learning. This allows for learning to take place not only in the classroom but also outside the classroom. It also affords the students the opportunity to interact with different information resources and technology, their colleagues and the lecturers. This necessitates the deployment of technology by Library and Information Science lecturers. The use of technology requires the awareness of such technology, benefits and acquisition of Information and Communication Technology skills. However, literature has revealed that some lecturers are still reluctant to adopt technology for their teaching because it is time consuming and they do not have the requisite skills. This paper highlights the benefits, types, skills and institutional support required to facilitate the use of technology for teaching and learning by lecturers in library schools in Nigeria. It concludes that LIS lecturers need develop ICT skills and adopt technology for their teaching and learning. It recommends that the management of universities in Nigeria should provide the necessary institutional support for the use of technology by the lecturers in library schools.Item Educating library and information science students for an ethical information age(Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, 2019) Adetimirin, A.Library and Information Science (LIS) students use information materials for their academic activities. However, in this information age, LIS students are faced with information overload, but are expected to use information appropriately. The way LIS students behave in the use of information is referred to as ethical behaviour. Students that abide by rules and ethics of a profession will behave ethically good, while those that exhibit behaviours that do not abide by such rules and ethics are said to have unethical behaviour. Students behave unethically in ways such as academic dishonesty, plagiarism, cheating, copying and infringement of copyright and should, therefore, acquire ethical knowledge and imbibe such to facilitate their job performance after graduation. Studies have revealed that ethics can be taught as a topic within a course, or throughout the LIS curriculum. The article investigated the ethical behaviour of students, why students should be educated on ethical behaviour, and ways of educating students on ethical behaviour. The acquisition of ethical behaviour to LIS students can be provided by lecturers and library and information professionals on a regular basis.Item Ethical behaviour of postgraduate students electronic information resources use: what implication for university lecturers and librarians?(The Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education, The Department of Early Childhood and Educational Foundations, and The Department of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, 2017) Adetimirin, A.Item Gender influence on ICT use by undergraduates in two university libraries in Nigeria(Better Advances Press, 2013) Ojeniyi, A.; Adetimirin, A.ICT use helps to facilitate easy access to electronic information for research and learning purposes by undergraduates. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of gender on the use of ICT among undergraduates in two university libraries in Nigeria. Undergraduates from three faculties were randomly selected to give a sample of 223, which is 30% fraction of the total population of 12,353. Questionnaire was the data collection method used. The undergraduates used ICT for research purpose and to support course of study. ICT use was higher among the undergraduates in Lead City University than those in University of Ibadan. ICT use was influenced by gender in both universities. Recommendations based on the outcome of this study were highlighted in this paper.Item Influence of computer literacy on postgraduates' use of e-resources in Nigerian university libraries(University Libraries of the University of Nebraska--Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, 2015) Abubakar, D.; Adetimirin, A.This study investigated how computer literacy predisposes postgraduate students to use e-resources. The survey research design and multi-stage sampling technique were used to select 2726 postgraduate students from 16 Nigerian universities. A questionnaire and computer test was used to collect data and data was analysed using percentages and Pearson’s product moment correlation. The postgraduates’ computer literacy level was average (56.3%). They used only few of the e-resources in their libraries and the frequency of usage was low (weighted average X = 2.45). Computer literacy had positive relationship with postgraduates’ usage of e-resources that was positive, very strong and significant (r= .740; df=2284; p< .05). This shows that the more the postgraduates’ are exposed to computer literacy skills, the better the use of e resources for their researches. Computer literacy is necessary to influence use of e-resources by the postgraduates’ and therefore, computer literacy programme should be introduced for new entrant postgraduates.Item Influence of information support system on ICT use by distance learners in university of Lagos, Nigeria(IISTE, 2014) Aralu, U.; Adetimirin, A.The use of modern technology in Education is the key to an increased drive for learning which shape learners critical and analytic competencies with respect to disciplinary knowledge. Weekly use of journals was found to be highest for those in Technology. Undergraduates in all the disciplines attributed power supply as a major factor affecting journal use, while those in the Social Sciences agreed that inadequate ICT skills (36.0°/o), inadequate ICT (35.0%) and difficulty locating journals (27.8%) were the major factors that affected their use of journals. Improved use of journals would be achieved when these challenges are eradicated.Item Promoting quality assurance through provision of electronic information resources in Nigerian library schools(University Press PLC, Ibadan, 2016-05) Akinbo, O.; Adetimirin, A.Nigerian library and information science (LIS) schools are professional institutions that train students in the various aspects of information profession. These include the creation, selection, organization, management, preservation, dissemination and utilization of collections of information resources in all formats. Nigerian LIS schools play a significant role in the production of high quality LIS professionals who occupy a unique position in national development. Adequate provision of resources especially in electronic format for students’ use will translate into quality delivery of knowledge in the profession. Inadequate information and communication technology (ICT) skills, low basic information literacy levels, prohibitive cost to gain access to the internet, inadequate ICT infrastructure, inadequate affordable online access to the internet amongst others are the constraints faced by Nigerian LIS schools in the provision of electronic information resources, thereby hampering quality assurance in the profession. This reveals a need for great efforts by LIS schools in Nigeria to promote quality assurance through provisions of opportunities to meet the basic learning needs of LIS students for the emerging global society. This paper therefore discusses Nigerian LIS schools, electronic information resources, as well as their values in LIS schools in Nigeria for promoting quality assurance.Item A survey of undergraduates’ use of library resources in university of Ibadan: does discipline affect library use?(2012) Adetimirin, A.; Ojetola, A.Use of library resources and factors that hindered use by undergraduates in Social Science and Science disciplines in University of Ibadan was investigated. Random sampling was used to select two and three departments from social science and science respectively and a sample size of 218. Questionnaire was used for data collection. Results showed that print resources were more available for use than electronic resources in both disciplines. Majority of the social science students used the resources for examination and assignment (52.6%), while those in science used them more for examination purposes (57.8%). Books were accessible to students in both disciplines but journals, research projects and dictionaries were more accessible to social science students than science students. Social science students used books, journals, research projects and dictionaries more frequently than science students. The undergraduates in both disciplines expressed that unavailability of library resources, erratic electricity power supply, and improper preservation of library resources, obsolete materials and inadequate ICT facilities hindered their use of library resources. The use of library resources was determined by their accessibility and discipline of the undergraduates.Item Technology adoption for teaching: the ethical considerations(IGI Global, Hersbey PA, USA, 2020) Adetimirin, A.Item Use of ICT for administrative tasks by distance learning students of university of Ibadan, Nigeria(2010-05) Adetimirin, A.; Aigbefoh, L.A study of 175 Distance Learning students from the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan to determine their ICT use for admission and registration was investigated. Majority of the students used the cyber-cafe as access points for their admission (64.6 %>) and 72.8% for registration process. Over 68.4% of the respondents used ICT for admission, while over 95%> used it for their registration processing. The major constraints to ICT use for these tasks were: cumbersome procedure, unreliability of Internet service providers (ISPs), unstable power supply and high cost of accessing the Internet. Training should be given to the students to enhance their ICT skills and the internet connectivity should be more stable for easy access to perform the tasks.Item Use of social media by part-time students of the polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria(Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, 2018-06) Adetimirin, A.; Adeyemo, S. A.; Oyewole, O.Social media provides the avenue for communication and interaction among students and lecturers using multimedia features such as texts, pictures and videos. Despite the benefits associated with the use of the social media, it seems most students use social media mostly for various purposes other than academic activities. The main objective of this study is therefore, to find out the use of social media for academic purpose among part-time students in the Polytechnic Ibadan. A sample of 213 year one part-time National Diploma (ND) students was selected and data were collected using a questionnaire. Results revealed that Facebook was the most available and the most used social media for academic purpose. Majority of the students chose learning and assignment as the academic activities that necessitated their use of social media. Erratic power supply of electricity and high cost of subscription to internet data bundle were the major challenges encountered by the students. Recommendations based on the outcome of this study were highlighted in this study.Item Why and how of technology integration for services in university libraries?(Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Library Association, 2017) Adetimirin, A.University libraries are expected to provide efficient services to users and this can be facilitated with technology. The technology to be adopted must be such that will benefit both the librarians and the users. For technology to be adopted in a university library, adequate planning must be taken to ensure that the most relevant technology is adopted that will improve the services provided. The planning should include the consideration of factors such as type of technology, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, cost and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills of librarians. The study investigated the type of technology integrated and factors considered in planning in ten university libraries in South-west, Nigeria using an interview schedule to collect data from a librarian in charge of technology in each of the universities. Results were thematically analysed. Findings revealed that all the university libraries were using software, social media but only four libraries were using Radio Frequency Identification. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were factors considered for technology integration. University libraries have integrated technology for various activities but sustainability of these technologies should be ensured and regular trainings to improve the ICT skills of the library personnel should be done.
