Item Production techniques of photoplay magazines: the example of atọ́ka, a yorùbá photodrama(Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria, 2019-04) Akangbe, C. A.The Yorùbá theatre practitioners employed the print media – tagged photoplay magazine – as production medium for several of its plays during the second half of the twentieth century. The first and foremost publication in the photoplay genre was named Ató ḳ a. A unique outlet of dramatic expression by the Yorùbá theatre companies from 1967 – 1991. However, Atóka has received little attention from researchers. The theory of Total Quality Management (TQM) was employed for the study. The objective of this study is to document Atóka’s production techniques and put its contributions to the development of Yorùbá entertainment industry on record. The primary data consisted of 108 editions (25%) randomly selected from a total of 430 editions published. In-depth interviews were conducted with all the five editors and one former photographer of Atóka. Findings showed that Atóka was a fusion of dramatic arts, photographic arts and publishing arts. Its complex and sophisticated production was also a melting pot of different specialisations and disciplines. Atóka had an electrifying impact on its teeming readers across Nigeria and beyond. This paper is broadly discussed under: introduction, concept of TQM, origination and design, editorial and editing, printing, discussion of findings, and conclusion.Item Total quality management in pre-press: a study of book printers in Ibadan, Nigeria(2016-04) Akangbe, C. A.Quality control (QC) in a book printing firm is prerequisite for excellence in production therefore it should be incorporated into the day-to-day activities of printing companies. It was observed that books produced by printers in Ibadan are generally of average quality. This study therefore investigated how printers can incorporate Total Quality Management (TQM) into printing processes to ensure high quality production. Survey method was adopted, structured questionnaire was the instrument employed while three research questions were formulated. Book printers constituted the population of the study and 110 were randomly selected as sample. The 110 copies of the questionnaire administered were duly returned. The data collected was analysed using percentages and statistical mean. Findings revealed that most of the printing firms neither have QC department, personnel, nor have heard of TQM. The study recommended that the installation of TQM in pre-press operations in Ibadan is a recipe for quality book production.Item Information and communication technology skills and editorial competence as factors influencing quality textbook production by publishers in South-West, Nigeria(Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria., 2019) Akangbe, C. A.Textbooks occupy a pride of place in book publishing business and adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills has empowered editors to attain proficiency and competence. This study examined ICT skills and editorial competence as factors influencing quality educational textbooks production by publishers in South-west, Nigeria. Survey method was adopted for the study, questionnaire was the research instrument, while four research questions were formulated. Population was the 62 publishing firms in South-west Nigeria while sample for the study was the publishing staff of twelve randomly selected publishing companies. Data was analysed using percentages and statistical mean. Findings showed that ICT skills and editorial competence were crucial factors that influenced the quality of educational textbooks in South-west, Nigeria. The study recommended that ICT skills acquisition and editorial empowerment should be emphasised by publishers to achieve quality educational textbooks.
