Item Influence of computer literacy on postgraduates' use of e-resources in Nigerian university libraries(University Libraries of the University of Nebraska--Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, 2015) Abubakar, D.; Adetimirin, A.This study investigated how computer literacy predisposes postgraduate students to use e-resources. The survey research design and multi-stage sampling technique were used to select 2726 postgraduate students from 16 Nigerian universities. A questionnaire and computer test was used to collect data and data was analysed using percentages and Pearson’s product moment correlation. The postgraduates’ computer literacy level was average (56.3%). They used only few of the e-resources in their libraries and the frequency of usage was low (weighted average X = 2.45). Computer literacy had positive relationship with postgraduates’ usage of e-resources that was positive, very strong and significant (r= .740; df=2284; p< .05). This shows that the more the postgraduates’ are exposed to computer literacy skills, the better the use of e resources for their researches. Computer literacy is necessary to influence use of e-resources by the postgraduates’ and therefore, computer literacy programme should be introduced for new entrant postgraduates.Item Lecturers and postgraduates perception of libraries as promoters of teaching, learning and research in university of Ibadan, Nigeria(Taylor & Francis, 2015) Oyewole, O.; Adetimirin, A.Lecturers and postgraduates are among the users of the university libraries and their perception of the libraries has influence on utilization of the information resources, hence the need for this study. Survey method was adopted for the study and simple random sampling method was used to select sample size of 38 lecturers and 233 postgraduates. Data was collected through a questionnaire complemented by an interview schedule. Results revealed that the overall perception was not favorable as 62% of lecturers and 77.7% of postgraduates indicated that they were not satisfied with the resources and facilities in the library.Item ICT literacy among undergraduates in Nigerian universities(Springer, 2011) Adetimirin, A. E.The purpose of this study was to investigate the availability, use of Information and Communication Technology and the ICT literacy skills of undergraduates in seven Nigerian universities. The descriptive survey research design was adopted and seven universities were selected based on distribution of ownership of university. Four faculties were purposively selected with a study population of 8,497. Random sampling procedure was employed using a sampling percentage of 20% to give a sample size of 1,702. Results revealed that computer, telephone and the Internet were the three ICT mostly used by the undergraduates, although more on an occasional basis. The undergraduates in the state universities (BSU and IMSU) were found to have poor ICT literacy skills in the use of the three ICT with over 25%, while those with average ICT literacy skills were in the federal universities (ABU and UNIMAID). Three major factors affecting the ICT literacy of the undergraduates were identified as irregular power supply, inadequate ICT and limited duration of the use of the ICT. For increased ICT literacy of undergraduates, the university administrators must introduce courses on ICT competency to all students especially first year students and encourage all lecturers to use ICT for teaching and learning. The article contains original work carried out on the ICT literacy competencies of undergraduates in selected Nigerian universities and the result would be useful to library staff and university administrators.Item Why and how of technology integration for services in university libraries?(Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Library Association, 2017) Adetimirin, A.University libraries are expected to provide efficient services to users and this can be facilitated with technology. The technology to be adopted must be such that will benefit both the librarians and the users. For technology to be adopted in a university library, adequate planning must be taken to ensure that the most relevant technology is adopted that will improve the services provided. The planning should include the consideration of factors such as type of technology, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, cost and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills of librarians. The study investigated the type of technology integrated and factors considered in planning in ten university libraries in South-west, Nigeria using an interview schedule to collect data from a librarian in charge of technology in each of the universities. Results were thematically analysed. Findings revealed that all the university libraries were using software, social media but only four libraries were using Radio Frequency Identification. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were factors considered for technology integration. University libraries have integrated technology for various activities but sustainability of these technologies should be ensured and regular trainings to improve the ICT skills of the library personnel should be done.Item Preservation management in university libraries in Southern Nigeria(Department of Library and Information Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 2015) Rasaki, O. E.; Abioye, A.Information resources in university libraries are susceptible to degradation, deterioration and destruction due to factors such as unfavourable temperature and relative humidity, activities of biological agents, theft and mutilation, mishandling and disasters. Forestalling the situation therefore calls for effective preservation management. University libraries particularly those in tropical zone are faced with acute problem of preservation management. This study, therefore, investigates preservation management of information resources in university libraries in Southern Nigeria. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 24 out of the 33 university libraries in the Southern Nigeria. A self designed questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Theft and mutilation, unauthorised access to information on computers, mishandling of library materials and deterioration by photocopying were the major threats to information material. Periodic fumigation, binding and repair of information materials and library security were the popular preservation measures available in the university libraries. Challenges facing university libraries in their preservation efforts include lack of electricity to power preservation facilities and equipment, inadequate funding and lack of preservation policy and strategies. The study recommended adequate security measures, adequate funding, provision of uninterrupted power supply and formulation of preservation policy to aid effective preservation management.
