Item Socio-economic status and use of social media by undergraduates in Redeemer’s University, Osun State, Nigeria(Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies University of Ibadan, Ibadan, 2020-12) Olaojo, P. O.; Oyeboade, J. A.There is a mass appeal of social media on the Internet in recent times. Perhaps, this is due to the gradually increasing amount of time that undergraduate students spend on the Internet to the detriment of their studies. The study, therefore, investigated socioeconomic Status and use of social media by undergraduates in Redeemer's University, Osun State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design of the correlational type. Data were collected from 121 undergraduates of the Redeemer's University with the use of a structured questionnaire with Cronbach alpha [a = 0.78J. Data analysis was done using frequency count and percentage distribution to answer the research question 1-3 white the Pearson's Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 level of significance was used to answer the research question 4. The main social media use by the undergraduates includes Facebook (100.0%), WhatsApp (86.8%), Ebuddy and (82.6%). Socio-economic Status of affluence for undergraduates' use of social media include: dignifying parental occupation, parental educational qualification, and steady monthly allowance. The students used social media for chatting (71.9%), checking through wall/news (76.9%), sharing Information, files, photos, and documents (100.0%). Socio-economic Status has significant relationship with use of social media (r = .816”; df = 120; p <0.05). The undergraduates use different types of social media for leisure, entertainment and knowledge sharing. It was, therefore, recommended that university authorities should seek to appreciate the use of social media for academic purposes; researchers should focus more on studies of social media use in education, and so on.Item Social media monitoring by personnel in libraries: listening etiquette and best practices for engaging users(Department of School Library and Media Technology, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, 2023) Olaojo, P. M.Social media has the ability to build social Capital, facilitate knowledge sharing, and be used for internal and external communication by institutions and organizations. Many libraries around the world, on the other hand, appear to sign up for and make their presence known on various social media platforms without actively using them. Perhaps there isn’t enough manpower to keep track of how libraries use social media to give Services to their patrons. Asa result, this study discussed concerns related to social media surveillance by library workers as well as effective practices for interacting and listening to users. The paper was written using a literature- based methodology. Textbooks, scholarly publications, media, and Internet sources were used to compile the literature review, which encompassed the years 2007 to 2017. Before valid decisions for inferences were made, issues and themes were thoroughly compared. Best practices for engaging library users on social media; Social media monitoring plan for library Professionals; Building some early social media successes; Measuring the efficiency of social media strategies; The lead generation funnel; Best practices for engaging library users on social media; and Listening etiquette for engaging library users on social media were all reviewed thoroughly. Facebook, Linkedln, MySpace, Academia.com, GoodRead.com, Classmates.Com, LibraryThing, YouTube, Instagram, Podcast, Pinterest, Flicker, Tumblr, and other social media platforms were deemed useful for effective, dependable, and satisfactory Information and Service delivery to users. Consequently, library marketing strategies should be improved to ensure that patrons of individual libraries are adequately informed about web-based Information resources and Services available, as well as where such resources and services could be offered to them on Internet-related platforms, particularly social media. Library management should also provide regular training and workshops for library staff and users in Order to improve their ICT literacy.Item Assessment of factors affecting social media use for HIV and AIDS communication among undergraduate students in South-Western Nigeria(2017-06) Alonge, A. J.; Kiai, W.; Ndati, N.The study evaluated factors that affect use of social media for HIV and AIDS communication among federal university undergraduates in south western Nigeria. The cross-sectional research method was employed. Structured questionnaire copies were administered to 355 undergraduate students. Quantitative data gathered from the administered questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result showed that blogs (41.1%), twitter (25.4%) and WhatsApp (17.7%) were the social media sites preferred by male and female respondents for sharing and accessing HIV and AIDS information. The use of these social media sites for HIV and AIDS information communication was influenced by privacy and neutrality. It also showed that majority of the undergraduates affirmed that HIV and AIDS information on social media platforms was very useful because it facilitated access to quality tips on HIV. A significant percentage of the respondents also affirmed that the use of social media was hugely affected by epileptic nature of power supply, poor network connectivity, ICT skills and cost of subscription. Stepwise multiple regression analysis identified ICT skill as the only environmental factor that had significant influence on social media use (F= 4.234, p<0.05) and was responsible for 33.9% of the variation in social media use for HIV information communication. The study suggested the campaign on prominent HIV/AIDS discussion sites and ICT skill acquisition to enable youth connect and effectively make use of social media for HIV information communication.Item Social media in library and information centres(Information Science Reference, USA (an imprint of IGI Global), 2012) Alonge, A. J.This chapter discusses social networking as a new tool in information management, using Facebook as case study. It explicates how social networking can enhance library outreach and librarians ’collaboration. It presents social networking as new tool in information management that is capable of creating future prospects, opportunities, and hope for library users, and information and library professionals. For the purpose of this work, three groups were created on Facebook. One for library users and two for Librarians: Academic Library Users, African Librarian, and Nigerian Librarians. Social networking sites could be effectively used to disseminate information and promote pleasant professional relationship among librarians and library users. It encourages academic collaboration. With Facebook group, pictures of memorable events could be shared, news could be posted, and meetings, conferences, and workshops could be announced.Item Use of social media by part-time students of the polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria(Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, 2018-06) Adetimirin, A.; Adeyemo, S. A.; Oyewole, O.Social media provides the avenue for communication and interaction among students and lecturers using multimedia features such as texts, pictures and videos. Despite the benefits associated with the use of the social media, it seems most students use social media mostly for various purposes other than academic activities. The main objective of this study is therefore, to find out the use of social media for academic purpose among part-time students in the Polytechnic Ibadan. A sample of 213 year one part-time National Diploma (ND) students was selected and data were collected using a questionnaire. Results revealed that Facebook was the most available and the most used social media for academic purpose. Majority of the students chose learning and assignment as the academic activities that necessitated their use of social media. Erratic power supply of electricity and high cost of subscription to internet data bundle were the major challenges encountered by the students. Recommendations based on the outcome of this study were highlighted in this study.
